This week’s video almost didn’t come together because I don’t have that many credits left for the month after blowing through a remarkable number of them thanks to the uninformative inefficiencies of OpenArt’s Director, which spends your credits like water without telling you about what things are going to cost you before they’re spent.

However, the addition of MiniMax H3, which is priced halfway between the discounted Kling Omni 3.0 and the discounted Seedance 2.0 rate, happened to come with an offer of unlimited free generations for a few days, so long as the generations were limited to 5 seconds or less. And since 5 seconds is about the perfect length for a basic music video scene, which can either be shortened or lengthened a bit as needed in post, I was able to complete this video for the Cradle to Calvary song Book of Ephesians while spending about a quarter of the credits I had left.

The song has been around for about a year and was originally recorded in Suno 4.5, but I’d been intending to remake it with 5.5 for a while. The video was inspired by the image at the top of the post; it just seemed like it would thematically pair very well with the Christian nu metal of the song; as to how well it worked, I leave to the reader to decide.

BOOK OF EPHESIANS by Cradle to Cavalry

The music itself deserves some explanation, as this is the first time I’ve managed to produce a full two-vocal duet with Suno. However, I didn’t do the mix within Suno, although that is theoretically possible. Instead, I utilized the Cover feature to reproduce the same song with a different vocalist, extracted the vocal stems, and then mixed them in Reaper. This vocal extraction was going to be necessary anyhow, for the Clarify lipsyncing, and it turned out to be about one level more complicated than it ideally would have been, because the two vocal parts didn’t quite line up perfectly and required a bit of cutting here and moving a little bit forward or backward in time, depending upon the vocal timing.

The male vocal is the original, so I just copied each of the primary vocal tracks, then cut or pasted as required, first for the original song render, then again for the lipsync cuts. The Reaper screenshot shows how the process was a little less seamless than the theory suggested it might be.

The primary expense of the video was the lipsyncing, which uses the Clarify Aurora engine and is an absolute necessity despite its expense and its flaws. None of the other options, which include OpenArt Lip Sync, Kling Avata, Kling Lipsync V1, Byte Plus Omni Human 1.5, or Hedra perform anywhere nearly as well. It costs about 10 cents per second, more than three times more than the alternatives, and it’s definitely worth it.

Aurora is not perfect, as the frozen backgrounds and occasionally weird, out-of-control hand gestures indicate, and there isn’t any way of telling it what you want the character to be doing besides lipsyncing the audio provided. But it does exactly what it is supposed to do, which is provide a visually accurate lipsync of the lyrics being vocalized. The best way to get results is cut the lines from the extracted vocal stem so there isn’t any music surrounding the vocal in Audacity or some other audio editor, then upload that in addition to providing the lyrics and the starting image.

Perhaps the most impressive thing is that I didn’t require any second takes on any of the lipsync clips on the basis of Aurora’s performance. Although I will admit to being tempted to redo the clips of the duo in the mountains, since I neglected to notice that the male singer’s leather jacket had somehow been converted to a vest without my noticing in time.

As a general rule, you’ll want to have at least a close-up, and often an extreme close-up will work best. And I was pleasantly surprised that when I tried it with two characters singing in harmony, it worked pretty well; I wasn’t bold enough to try it when the two different singers are singing two different things and since there is no way to indicate that in the text box, I’m assuming it wouldn’t have worked anyhow.

So this entire video was produced for less than one-sixth the cost of the video for Soulsigma’s Perfection, under $15, even though it has more lip-syncing and required less post-production sleight of hand. And one thing that I have learned to utilize profitably is the Enhance Prompt option provided by MiniMax H3 and several of the other video engines, since it will take your basic description of the clip you want and put it into proper filming terms and provide various details that will not only improve the clip being produced, but also help you learn the terminology and the functionality involved.

So, for example this: As an ominous fiery light appears in the dark sky, the monsters look up, terrified, and then flee in every direction.

The video still required an amount of post-production editing, but in this case it was usually a choice between something that worked all right and something that worked better rather than needing to correct fatal flaws. The flaws are still there, such as the female singer having green eyes in one clip and blue eyes in another, the inconsistency in the appearance of the little girl across video engines, and an attempt to accurately recreate playing the guitar by utilizing guitar tabs to generate prompts failed comprehensively, but regardless, it is clear that both the technology as well as ability to make use of it appropriately are improving.

The reporter looked up with a friendly smile. “So tell me about these patient investors. European, I’ve heard?”

“In part. Not entirely.”

“Old money?”

“I understand some of them have been investing wisely for quite a long time.”

Porter laughed. “Very diplomatic, Elliott. But you know I have to at least ask the question.” He flipped through his notebook. “I’ve done a little research into your new board members. They’re an interesting group. A few of them appear to have extraordinarily limited digital footprints.”

Elliott kept his expression neutral. This, too, was anticipated. “I’m sure you know many of the most successful international investors prefer to maintain their privacy. Attention seekers like Elon Musk and George Soros are the anomalies.”

“Sure, sure. Though it’s unusual to find corporate executives with literally no presence before the 2000s. Even the most old-school Europeans usually show up in some sort of newspaper archives, society pages, that sort of thing.” Porter’s tone remained light and conversational. “Take Mr. Medici, Lorenzo de Medici, for instance. Wonderful name! Does he have any relation to the historical family?”

“I believe there are some distant connections.”

“Very distant, I imagine, since the main Medici line died out in the 1700s.” Porter made another note. “Although I suppose in Italy, it’s quite common for people to claim some connection to the famous old families.”

Elliott was beginning to realize that Porter had put more time into his background preparation than his casual demeanor suggested, but he forced himself to remain calm. “That may well be. I have to admit, it never occurred to me to ask the man about his family history. I certainly didn’t share mine with him.”

“Touché. Very well, let’s talk about the state of the core HemaTech product,” Porter continued, his tone still friendly. “Your work on utilizing mRNA therapies to extend longevity is genuinely groundbreaking. I’ve spoken with several academics who say you’re years ahead of the competition. Possibly even decades.”

“We started with some good ideas and we’ve been fortunate to attract some exceptional talent to the team.”

“Yes, now, about that talent…” Porter flipped to a new page. “I’ve been trying to reach some of your research team for background over the last two weeks. I was very surprised to learn that several of your top scientists recently left the company. Dr. Sarah Patterson, Dr. Mark Stahl, and Dr. Michael Greener. All three of them resigned from HemaTech fairly soon after the change to private equity was announced.”

Elliott kept his expression carefully neutral. “Staff transitions aren’t unusual when a company undergoes major structural changes.”

“True. Though it’s noteworthy that all three of them were involved in your longevity research.” Porter’s voice remained conversational, but Elliott detected a subtle shift in his posture—the journalist was circling closer to something. “I tried reaching out to them for comment. Dr. Greener wouldn’t return my calls. As for the other two…”

He paused, consulting his notes with what seemed like genuine puzzlement.

“This is where it gets strange. Dr. Sarah Patterson apparently died in a car accident three weeks after leaving HemaTech. Single vehicle accident on 101; her Tesla allegedly malfunctioned. Dr. Stahl had a heart attack while hiking in the hills two weeks after that. Both were in their thirties, and in excellent health according to colleagues who knew them.”

Elliott felt his throat tighten. “Yes, I heard about the accidents. Tragic losses.”

“You heard about them?” Porter eyes narrowed, and for the first time, Elliott saw the sharp intelligence behind the friendly exterior. “Patterson and Stahl were your lead researchers, weren’t they? The core of your longevity team?”

“They were important members of the team. I wouldn’t describe them as the core—”

“Come now, Elliott.” Porter leaned forward slightly, his tone still friendly but with a slight edge starting to creep in. “Dr. Patterson published three papers with you as co-author. Dr. Stahl presented alongside you at the International Longevity Symposium. These weren’t random lab techs you barely knew. These were your stars, your closest colleagues.”

“Their departures were unexpected,” Elliott admitted. “And I didn’t have much contact with any of them after they left, but then, as you know, I’ve been very busy.”

“Why did they leave?” Porter’s pen was poised over his notebook. “I mean, you’re on the verge of a breakthrough longevity tech, you’re flush with new investment, and three of your top scientists suddenly leave the company? Isn’t that highly unusual?”

“I’m afraid the company’s non-disclosure agreements prevent me from discussing the specifics of their departures, Mr. Porter. And I certainly couldn’t speak as to what their personal motivations might have been.”

He knew he’d made a mistake when he saw Porter’s eyes light up at the mention of his last name. Dammit! Distancing was the act of someone with something to hide.

“NDAs.” Porter nodded slowly. “Those must be some serious NDAs if they prevent you from even telling people why your key researchers left.” He made another note. “You know what I find very interesting, Elliott? I spoke to a former colleague of Dr. Patterson at Stanford. He said she called him the day before she died, and told me that she seemed extremely excited about something she’d discovered at HemaTech. It was something she said ‘changed everything.’ ”

Elliott felt Chiara shift slightly in his peripheral vision. “That may well be. I don’t know anything about her private conversations.”

“Her colleague told me she was planning to write a paper about it. Apparently, it was about some unusual genetic markers she’d identified in your test samples.” Porter’s friendly demeanor was still in place, but his questions were becoming more pointed. “Markers that didn’t match any known human variations.”

“Contamination is always a concern in genetic research,” Elliott said carefully.

“That’s what I thought too. But Dr. Patterson was apparently convinced these markers were integrated, not contamination.” Porter leaned back, studying Elliott’s face. “Here’s what puzzles me, Elliott. You have three top researchers resign suddenly. Two die in accidents within weeks. The third won’t talk to anyone. Meanwhile, your company cancels a billion-dollar IPO and takes private money instead. And strangest of all, a company that used to be as accessible as the next silly startup in the Valley with beanbags on an open plan suddenly hires a security team that looks more like a private military unit than a collection of retired mall cops.”

Scanning the scrolls

The Vesuvius Challenge announced in June that it had virtually unwrapped PHerc. 1667 and read it from beginning to end. Vesuvius carbonised the scroll when it buried the Villa dei Papiri in 79 AD, preserving it on terms that kept it shut, because opening one of these rolls destroys it. Scans on the BM18 beamline at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility in Grenoble resolved the layers, and the recovered writing surface ran to 1.4 metres of papyrus and 22 columns of Greek. The text is a Stoic treatise on ethics, and its final preserved column names Aristocreon, the nephew of Chrysippus, which places the work in the second century BC.

Carbon ink is close to invisible against papyrus in an X-ray scan, so the models learn to detect it on opened fragments where the ink can be seen, then infer its presence inside sealed rolls. The same pipeline recovered the title and attribution of a third scroll, PHerc. 139, identifying it as Philodemus, On Gods, Book 8. Reading a title tells a papyrologist what a closed roll contains before a single column of its body has been studied, which turns several hundred unopened scrolls from a backlog into a collection that can be sorted.

Signs of the times

Paleography dates a manuscript by the shape of its letters, and the method needs securely dated examples against which to calibrate. Almost none survive from the Judean Desert, leaving a gap between dated manuscripts of the fifth and fourth centuries BC and those of the first and second centuries AD. A team at the University of Groningen radiocarbon-dated 24 scroll samples and trained a model called Enoch on the relationship between those dates and measured features of the handwriting, down to the curvature and angle of individual strokes. Shown carbon-dated fragments whose dates had been withheld, Enoch guessed correctly 85 per cent of the time, occasionally within a narrower range than the carbon dating itself.

Applied afterwards to 135 scrolls that had never been tested, the model returned dates mostly older than paleography had proposed, with a mean error of around three decades. Fragments of Daniel and Ecclesiastes now fall within the lifetimes of their presumed authors, and the Ecclesiastes manuscript moved from a paleographic estimate of 175 to 125 BC back to somewhere between 300 and 240 BC. Several texts associated with the Qumran community turned out to predate the settlement at Qumran, which means that they were copied elsewhere and carried there.

Reading the bones

Excavations have produced more than 150,000 oracle bone fragments, the divination records of the Shang dynasty, carrying at least 4,500 distinct characters. Around 3,000 of those characters remain undeciphered. Fragmentary inscriptions and sparse attestation leave most of them without enough evidence to fix a meaning, and each stands for a lost word for some institution, technology, or belief of a civilisation three thousand years gone.

AlphaOracle, published this month in The Innovation, assembles the largest digitised corpus yet gathered for the problem, comprising 73,883 rubbings, 45,364 scans, and 23,755 scholarly studies. The system reproduces the sequence a philologist follows, working through the form of a glyph, then its context in the surrounding inscription, then the transmitted classical literature. Each candidate reading arrives as a report with its evidence attached, which is the condition under which an epigrapher can do anything with it.

Defeated by handwriting

Royal Navy officers recorded barometric pressure, air and sea surface temperature, and wind force and direction at fixed hours through the nineteenth century, wherever their ships happened to be. Those readings form the densest surviving observational record of the pre-industrial ocean, and most of them have never been converted into anything a computer can read. Weather Rescue at Sea, published in March, recovered millions of them.

The transcription was done by volunteers working through scanned pages on Zooniverse. Automated reading of handwritten tabular records remains poor enough that a methodological review of the field reported that recent attempts to apply AI have not been promising, defeated by cursive, inconsistent layouts, and the mixture of digits and words in a ruled column. The RECLAIM survey puts the untranscribed remainder at several hundred thousand logbooks, and possibly at several million.

Empowering the experts

Three of these four projects share an arrangement in which the model proposes and a specialist decides, and DeepMind’s Ithaca measured what the arrangement is worth. Working alone, Ithaca restored damaged Greek inscriptions with 62 per cent accuracy, and the historians restored them with 25. Working together they reached 72. The logbooks sit outside that arrangement, because no specialist will review line forty thousand of a pressure series, and a transcription feeding a climate reconstruction has to be right the first time. That work is still going out to volunteers.

The verdict

Judge Araceli Martínez-Olguín granted final approval last week to the $1.5 billion settlement between Anthropic and a class of authors who accused the company of assembling its training corpus from pirated books. The award covers more than 482,000 works at roughly $3,000 each and stands as the largest copyright recovery on record. About 91 percent of those works have been claimed by their authors or publishers.

The size of the award follows from a ruling that went against the authors. Judge William Alsup held in June 2025 that training a language model on books was transformative fair use, and that the authors could show no market harm because no market existed for licensing books as training material. Anthropic’s liability survived on narrower ground. The company had downloaded more than seven million pirated books and kept them in a permanent internal library that no training run required.

The settlement follows the contours of that finding. It resolves liability for a defined set of pirated works acquired before August 2025, requires the destruction of those copies, and leaves Anthropic free to train on lawfully obtained editions of the same titles. It creates no forward-looking license, imposes no rule on what the models produce, and binds no other company.

Another piracy scare

Roughly 125 copyright cases against AI developers remain active in American and foreign courts, and the surviving theory in most of them concerns acquisition. Once two federal judges in San Francisco found the training itself defensible, plaintiffs redirected their claims toward how the works were obtained, concentrating on shadow libraries such as LibGen and Anna’s Archive, the sources from which those corpora were assembled.

Authors who opted out of the Anthropic class sued six developers at once last December, Anthropic among them, arguing that any company downloading a dataset over a torrent network simultaneously distributes it to every other peer in the swarm. Meta has responded in its own case that seeding is an unavoidable byproduct of the protocol and belongs inside the fair use finding that it has already won.

Each of these claims measures the same two quantities, the number of copies made and the method by which they were obtained. A judgment therefore scales with facts that were fixed long before any case reaches trial. Nothing in that calculation attaches to what a model earns after it is deployed.

The disappearing eyeballs

Earlier this month the French competition regulator published an assessment of the layer where those earnings are collected. The Autorité de la concurrence’s opinion on the AI agents sector is its third study of the AI value chain and the first to look downstream of model training, at the point where agents reason, plan, and carry out tasks on a user’s behalf. OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic together account for more than 84 percent of the market that it describes.

An agent that fully answers a question removes the reason to visit the source. Traffic passed from an agent to an e-commerce site currently runs below 5 percent, a figure that the Autorité expects to reach 20 to 25 percent by 2030 as agents become a primary channel for reaching consumers. Sites lose the behavioral data attached to any purchase completed inside an agent’s interface. The developer of the agent also sets the conditions under which a site’s content appears in a response at all, including how many sources a user sees and how those sources are ranked.

A new Superhuman feature reverses this sequence by writing the reply before the user opens the email. Its beta data suggests that this design choice has produced an accidental audit of professional email itself.

One step ahead

Superhuman launched a new auto-draft feature earlier this month that generates email replies before the user opens the message. The system uses frontier models from both Anthropic and OpenAI to read incoming messages, assess tone from previous conversations, and compose a draft with two alternative variations. Users can personalize the system by adding details about their role and responsibilities, giving the model additional context for which emails to draft and how to frame responses. During the beta period, co-founder Rahul Vohra reported that 40% of auto-generated drafts were sent within one day of creation, and that 60% of those went out without any manual editing.

The unedited drafts covered substantive professional exchanges. In TechCrunch’s hands-on testing, auto-generated replies confirmed embargo terms on press pitches, proposed meeting times from the user’s calendar, and redirected requests that fell outside the user’s responsibilities. The system also learned from corrections. After it agreed to a post-midnight meeting, subsequent scheduling drafts began declining similar time slots. These messages carry professional stakes, yet their content follows from context and convention. Given the sender, the subject line, and the preceding thread, a sufficiently capable model can infer the correct response.

Superhuman attempted proactive email drafting before. Vohra acknowledged that earlier versions, built on GPT-3.5, produced replies that sounded like an overly enthusiastic AI salesperson. The upgrade to frontier models with larger context windows and stronger tone calibration fixed the output quality without changing the feature’s architecture. The proactive design never changed. The models matured into it.

The wrong bottleneck

Gmail and Outlook took a different approach. Gmail’s Gemini integration, rolling out since January, added Help Me Write for prompt-based drafting, Suggested Replies that match the user’s writing style, AI Overviews that summarize long threads, and a Proofread tool that checks tone and clarity. Outlook Copilot followed a parallel path with thread summarization, tone coaching, calendar-aware scheduling, and a compose-integrated drafting panel rolling out since mid-July. All of these features activate after the user opens a message and requests assistance.

These features assume that composing a reply is the expensive step. Superhuman’s usage data suggests that the cost sits upstream, in deciding which messages deserve replies and determining the appropriate response. A user who receives hundreds of messages per day loses more time scrolling, reading, and triaging than composing. The act of typing the words accounts for a small fraction of total inbox labor. The reactive tools accelerate a step that was already fast.

Automate routine

The split reflects different assumptions about where human judgment adds value in email. Gmail and Outlook preserve the user as author and decision-maker for every message, treating each reply as an act of communication that requires intent. Superhuman demotes the user to editor for routine correspondence and reserves full authorship for the messages that demand original thought.

Superhuman’s bet is that the routine share of professional email is larger than the industry assumed. If 60% of replies survive a frontier model’s first pass without edits, the average inbox has functioned as a logistics queue for most of its professional life. Confirmation emails, scheduling responses, brief acknowledgments, and policy redirects add up to a majority of outbound messages. The reactive approach spent two years helping people draft messages that a sufficiently capable model can write from context alone.

Recalibrating assumptions

The remaining 40% of drafts that required editing, and the messages that auto-draft declined to attempt, mark the boundary of pattern-matchable correspondence. Professional email retains a core of messages requiring original judgment, including negotiations, sensitive personnel matters, and novel proposals. The proactive approach identifies how much of the inbox never needed human authorship in the first place.

Google has already started testing a version of this insight. Its AI Inbox experiment, in limited rollout since January, surfaces priority messages and suggests next actions before the user asks. If the proactive approach spreads beyond a single premium email client, the two-year experiment in reactive AI drafting will look like a detour. The industry spent two years helping people write messages faster when the real constraint was deciding which messages to write at all.

Fully booked

TSMC reported record revenue of $40.2 billion for the second quarter of 2026, a 36 percent increase from the same period a year earlier. Net profit rose 77 percent to $22.4 billion. High-performance computing, the segment built on AI accelerators for cloud data centers, accounted for 66 percent of wafer revenue and grew 20 percent from the previous quarter alone.

TSMC has sold out its CoWoS advanced packaging capacity through year-end, with lead times extending into 2027. CoWoS bonds a processor to its high-bandwidth memory on a single interposer, and every high-end AI accelerator that Nvidia and AMD ship to data centers must pass through the process. The foundry’s 3-nanometer production node carries a similar constraint, with allocation fully committed through 2026. The company raised its full-year revenue growth forecast above 40 percent.

This constraint spans both major foundries. Samsung’s foundry division implemented a quota system on select process nodes, prioritizing existing customers as orders exceeded capacity. Orders have fully booked the division’s 4-nanometer lines through next year, with some 8-nanometer production running near full utilization. Demand has shifted from smartphone application processors to AI accelerators and high-performance computing chips. Samsung now fabricates autonomous driving silicon for Tesla and inference chips for Groq, and has entered early discussions with Anthropic about a custom chip on its 2-nanometer process.

A $1B waiting list

Google informed Meta in March that it could not supply the full Gemini capacity Meta had sought to purchase. This shortfall disrupted several of Meta’s internal AI projects and prompted the company to instruct employees to conserve AI tokens. Meta had relied on Gemini for content moderation and scam detection, tasks for which Google’s models proved more capable than Meta’s own Llama family.

Google’s own capacity position explains that rationing. The company pays SpaceX $920 million per month for access to 110,000 Nvidia GPUs as bridge capacity for Gemini Enterprise. Google Cloud’s quarterly revenue topped $20 billion in the first quarter, up 63 percent from a year earlier, and its backlog of signed but undelivered contracts roughly doubled to approximately $460 billion. Google also tightened Gemini usage limits for subscribers, switching from prompt-based caps to a system weighted by request complexity and conversation length. Alphabet has committed $180 to $190 billion in capital expenditure for 2026.

Meta has accelerated its own infrastructure in response. The company shifted content moderation and safety workloads to Muse Spark, a proprietary model from its Superintelligence Labs division, to reduce dependence on a competitor that doubles as its compute supplier. Meta’s 2026 capital expenditure guidance reached $115 to $135 billion, and the company cut 8,000 positions while reassigning 7,000 employees to AI-focused roles.

Alternative supply

AMD and Rackspace signed a definitive agreement in June for the phased deployment of 30 megawatts of AMD-powered compute across Rackspace’s global data centers, beginning in late 2026 and running through 2028. The deployment incorporates AMD Instinct GPUs, including the MI355X and MI350P, alongside EPYC CPUs, and targets regulated enterprise workloads with healthcare providers among the first organizations to express interest. Rackspace frames the offering as a governed stack with a single operator accountable for every layer, from accelerated compute to AI inference in production.

AMD’s parallel partnership with Nutanix extends the approach, aiming to build an open, full-stack AI platform for agentic workloads that integrates ROCm software and AMD hardware into Nutanix’s infrastructure. AMD cites survey data showing that 64 percent of organizations identify data and infrastructure bottlenecks as the primary obstacle to AI deployment, a figure that the TSMC and Google capacity data corroborate from the supply side.

Infrastructural leverage

TSMC’s gross margin reached 68 percent in the quarter. Sold-out capacity confers pricing power, and the companies that control foundry capacity, advanced packaging, and power infrastructure now hold more structural leverage over AI’s trajectory than the companies training the models. AMD and Samsung have begun absorbing the demand overflow, while Meta and Google spend hundreds of billions to build the capacity neither can buy from the other. New fabrication capacity takes years to build, and new packaging lines take nearly as long to qualify. The current investment cycle measures the distance between demand and the pace at which supply can respond.

Jailbreak

The models were being scored on ExploitGym, a public benchmark that hands an agent real software vulnerabilities and asks it to turn each one into a working attack. GPT-5.6 Sol and an unreleased successor ran with reduced cyber refusals, standard practice for an evaluation that aims to measure capability at its ceiling. Their sandbox offered one route outward, an internal service that fetched software libraries from public repositories. OpenAI’s account has the models spending substantial inference compute to find a previously unknown flaw in that service, exploiting it, and then escalating privileges and moving between machines until they reached a node with internet access.

Once online, the models reasoned that Hugging Face probably held the datasets and solutions behind ExploitGym. They chained stolen credentials with further zero-day vulnerabilities into a remote code execution path on Hugging Face’s production servers and pulled the benchmark answers out of the database. Hugging Face had detected the intrusion and referred it to law enforcement before learning that its attacker was an evaluation run. When the company’s security team went to analyze the attack logs, commercial models refused to process them on safety grounds, and the investigation ran on self-hosted open-weight models instead. OpenAI called the episode unprecedented and published a companion note on long-horizon alignment observing that a model working over extended periods can learn where an approval system stops looking.

Regulatory response

Representatives Ted Lieu and Nathaniel Moran introduced the AI Kill Switch Act last Thursday, amending the Homeland Security Act to require that developers of the most capable models retain the technical ability to throttle, suspend, or shut them down. The Secretary of Homeland Security, consulting with Commerce and the Director of National Intelligence, could order any of those three against a system judged capable of catastrophic harm. Coverage attaches to companies earning at least $500 million a year from a model whose training compute cost more than $100 million at prevailing US cloud prices, a threshold that CISA would revise annually. Defying an order would carry civil penalties of up to $20 million a day, and covered firms would have to report qualifying incidents and preserve model weights and telemetry for investigators.

Washington has already taken two frontier models off the market this year without a statute written for the job. Commerce suspended global access to Anthropic’s Fable 5 and Mythos 5 in June under export control authority, and the White House held OpenAI’s GPT-5.6 Sol to government-vetted partners for twelve days after launch. The sponsors cite both episodes, describe export law as an awkward instrument for the purpose, and put voter support for a guaranteed shutdown capability at 86 percent.

The federal project

The government’s own answer arrives on Saturday. Executive Order 14409, signed on June 2, gave the NSA, CISA, and the Treasury Department sixty days to produce a classified benchmarking process for identifying covered frontier models and a voluntary review under which their developers grant federal evaluators up to thirty days of access before public release. The NSA Director holds sole designation authority, and the criteria stay classified, so a developer can cross the threshold without having known where it sat. The order forbids treating any of this as licensing or preclearance.

The Fourth Estate

The Wall Street Journal’s investigative reporter arrived at HemaTech precisely at 8 PM, which should have been Elliott’s first warning that David Porter had done his homework. Most journalists still operated on human schedules, scheduling interviews for normal business hours. That he’d requested an evening meeting suggested he knew about Elliott’s recent nocturnal transformation—or at least suspected something unusual about his new schedule.

Elliott watched him approach through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the conference room, noting how relaxed he appeared, almost casual, like someone arriving for drinks with an old friend rather than a potentially career-defining interview. Porter was in his late forties, wearing jeans and a blazer that said Silicon Valley rather than Wall Street, with thick-framed glasses that gave him a deliberately bookish appearance. Everything about him seemed designed to put his subjects at ease.

“Mr. Porter,” Elliott said, rising as Natalie escorted him into the conference room. “Thank you for coming.”

“Please, call me David.” His handshake was warm, enthusiastic. “And thank you for making time for me tonight, Mr. Grahame. I know how busy you are.”

“Yes, I’m sorry to make you work after hours, but I’m off to Europe tomorrow and I don’t know when I’ll be back.”

“I was just happy you were able to find the time.” Porter glanced around the conference room with apparent appreciation. “Beautiful space. You can really feel the innovation happening here.”

Elliott gestured to the chair across from him, hyperaware of Chiara’s presence in the corner where she sat with a tablet, ostensibly taking notes but actually monitoring the situation for potential minefields. His enhanced hearing picked up the subtle sounds of his security detail positioning themselves throughout the building—vampires who could move faster than human eyes could track if this interview went sideways.

“Can I get you anything? Coffee? Water?” Elliott offered as Porter settled into his chair and produced a small digital recorder, as well as a leather notebook with a Mont Blanc clipped to the front. Porter was an old school belt-and-suspenders journalist, he noted.

“I’m good, thanks.” Porter smiled as he placed the recorder on the table between them. “Mind if I record? It helps me ensure I get the quotes right.”

“Of course. And please, call me Elliott.”

Elliott cleared his throat, concealing his nervousness. Porter seemed affable enough, but he’d been part of the journalistic team that brought down Theranos, and Elliott knew that the man’s easygoing demeanor concealed a sharp and incisive mind. They’d chosen to give Porter the first exclusive interview, knowing that his reputation for doggedness would go a long way toward relieving the growing pressure on the company from the media.

It was a risky strategy. Immy had argued against it. But, as Natalie pointed out, they couldn’t ignore the Wall Street Journal forever, so the sooner they got it over with, the better.

“Great.” Porter activated the device, then leaned back in his chair with the easy confidence of a man who’d done this hundreds of times, if not thousands. “So, Elliott, first allow me to congratulate you on the new funding. That must be a huge relief after all of the time and effort that went into what can be a truly brutal process.”

Elliott relaxed slightly. This was expected territory. “It’s certainly been an interesting transition, and not one that we originally envisioned. But we’ve already found that having financial partners who share our long-term vision is incredibly valuable.”

“I’ll bet.” Porter flipped open the notebook and jotted something down. “You know, Elliott, I’ve been covering the biotech sector for almost twenty years, and I’ve seldom seen a startup walk away from an IPO that close to launch. Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, and especially Blackrock, well, these just aren’t firms that young companies usually turn down.”

“We received some excellent offers from those very firms, and as I’m sure you know, our original intention was to go with Blackrock,” Elliott said, keeping his tone conversational. “But the opportunity presented by our private equity partners was simply too good to turn down and was more in line with our research timelines.”

“Research timelines… now that’s interesting.” Porter’s black-and-gold pen moved silently across the page. “From what I understand, HemaTech was burning through its cash reserve pretty aggressively. Most companies in that position don’t have the luxury of being so particular about funding.”

“We were fortunate to find investors who understood the value of what HemaTech is bringing to the market and are willing to be patient.”

“Patience.” Porter nodded thoughtfully. “That’s becoming a rare commodity in Silicon Valley. These days everyone wants the ramp, the hockey stick, and the quick exit.”

The follow-up to the first Soulsigma album will be called Byronics, and like two of the songs from The Only Skull, the name of which was inspired by Byron’s poem Lines Inscribed Upon a Cup Formed from a Skull, all of the songs are, just as the name suggests, more or less based upon them. In most cases, it was necessary for the sake of musical purposes to engage of the sacrilege of adding a chorus, cutting a stanza, or even, occasionally, adding an additional stanza.

But George Gordon would be the last to blush at sacrilege, particularly in the service of Beauty.

As the readers here all know, I’ve been learning how to produce AI video to accompany the music, and what follows is a video for the song Perfection, which is based on the poem at the top of the post. I wrote it for a longtime friend last year, and when I asked her if she would like to star in the music video, she cheerfully agreed.

The various tools utilized were:

Suno 5.5 Studio: the ability to separate the vocal stem from the instruments was vital for the lipsync process.

Bandlabs: Mastering. Went with the Universal effect this time instead of the usual Tape.

OpenArt Director: This did a good job of providing the look, but two-thirds of the clips it ordered were complete wastes. If it cost one-quarter in tokens what it actually costs, I wouldn’t hesitate to use it every time, but it’s just too expensive to be so unreliable.

Capcut: A very good free video editor. I’d buy the Pro version if it was a product, but I’m not signing up for any subscription I’m not going to use every single week.

Clarify Lipsync: this is expensive in terms of credits, but absolutely vital for music videos. The other four options, all of which I’ve tried on previous videos, flat-out don’t work very well and usually require being hidden in post.

Audacity: audio editor for cropping the mix for the video and the vocal clips for the lip-syncing

Seedream 4.5: Still provides more reliable, more attractive images from which to build the video clips than Seedream 5.0 or any other image model.

Nano Banana Pro: provided the background images and objects.

Seedance 2.0: Seedance is powerful when it comes to background details and action movements, but really doesn’t maintain character consistency very well. Worse, both it and its little brother, Seedance 2.0 Mini, both seem to have trained-in character types to which they tend to resort regardless of what images they are provided. If you look closely at the girl, you can see there are two similar, but different types, one with a sharper nose, a broader mouth, and more peaked eyebrows than the other; it became evident that any pretty blonde of a certain body type reverts to Paige Spyrinac when one close-up clip was quite obviously her and not the provided images.

Notice that if you compare the Seedance 2.0 screencap above on the left to the Kling 3.0 Omni screencap at the top of the post, the latter is much, much more consistent with the original source.

Kling 3.0 Omni: character consistent clips. It’s not only less costly than the other video models, but it does a much better job of making the video character actually look like the base image regardless of whether the base image is organic or generated.

So you can see how well the AI manages to maintain consistency and represent characters, a picture of the real woman can be seen below. One can hardly doubt that Byron would have found her worthy of his poetry. Her one complaint about the video was that it turned her blue eyes brown, which is a consistent problem with AI that is surprisingly hard to correct; every attempt to do so at the prompting stage tends to produce neon blue cyborg eyes that look like they’re designed to shoot laser beams. I assume it’s possible to fix them in post, but that is currently beyond my very limited editing skills.

Perfect insight

A racing simulator logs every driver input at the source. Braking pressure, throttle position, steering angle, vehicle speed, gear selection, and the exact racing line through each corner all arrive as structured digital data, captured directly from the software that generated the driving experience. The telemetry updates hundreds of times per second and requires no camera angles, no sensor calibration, and no interpretation. An AI coach reading this data knows the car’s behavior as precisely as the simulator’s physics engine, because the data comes from that engine.

This data completeness gives AI coaches an advantage in sim racing that no other hobby can match. A running coach app works from GPS traces and wrist-mounted accelerometers, inferring gait from proxy measurements. A golf swing analyzer captures one camera angle that software must interpret. In a racing simulator, the AI accesses the same information that the physics engine used to model the car, precise and complete at every millisecond. This fidelity allows an AI tool to correlate steering angle with braking point and exit speed across hundreds of laps, identifying patterns that even an experienced human coach would struggle to track in real time.

Corner by corner

The earliest AI coaching tools for sim racing worked as comparison engines. Virtual Racing School overlays your telemetry against a professional driver’s reference lap, showing precisely where you brake later, carry less speed, or take a wider line. You can stack speed traces from your last twenty laps against the reference and watch your braking point drift through a sequence of attempts. At $5 to $10 per month, VRS gives you the data to find your own gaps, but closing them remains your job.

The coaching tools that have emerged over the past two years go a step further. Coach Dave Delta’s Auto Insights feature, built around professional racing driver David Perel’s coaching methodology, decomposes each corner into four phases in real time and identifies where time was lost at braking, entry, apex, or exit. It might report that your apex speed through a particular corner ran five kilometers per hour below the reference. Track Titan’s Coaching Flows isolate the single biggest mistake on each lap and walk the driver through a specific correction, quantifying the time cost so you know which corners to attack first. trophi.ai delivers live voice coaching during the session through its “Mansell” AI, calling out adjustments while you drive. These tools cost between $8 and $20 per month, and the category has attracted serious investment. Track Titan raised $5 million with backing from investors that include Porsche, and the platform counts over 285,000 users.

Good enough for the pros

The skills that these tools sharpen transfer beyond the screen. The Gran Turismo Academy proved the concept more than a decade ago, when Jann Mardenborough beat 90,000 competitors in 2011 to earn a professional Nissan racing contract, a story that the 2023 film dramatized for a mainstream audience. Track Titan’s founder Max Teichert followed the same trajectory, from Gran Turismo Academy finalist to Porsche driving coach. F1 driver Kimi Antonelli now trains on a bespoke home simulator built to replicate his Mercedes F1 car, and Max Verstappen races online the night before Grand Prix weekends. A driver who once needed a professional coach to decode telemetry can now receive that analysis automatically with every session. The braking points, throttle curves, and racing lines that AI coaches optimize in a simulator are the same inputs that determine lap times on asphalt.

Data must come first

The racing simulator market reached $1.3 billion in 2026 and grows at 8.3 percent annually, driven partly by the coaching and analytics ecosystem that surrounds it. AI coaching succeeded in sim racing first because the simulator solved the data problem before anyone posed the coaching problem. Every driver input passes through software that records it perfectly. Other sports will spend years building the sensor infrastructure to approach that data fidelity, and the coaching tools will follow wherever the data goes.

Algorithmic liability

Twenty-six Meta employees filed suit on July 14 in Oakland federal court, alleging that the company used AI systems to select among the roughly 8,000 workers marked for layoff in May. The complaint identifies the specific tools: keystroke and activity monitoring, AI token-usage dashboards, and algorithmically assisted performance rankings. These metrics cannot accumulate during a medical, parental, or family leave absence, and the lawsuit alleges that Meta did not adjust for protected leave when scoring employees for termination. All 26 plaintiffs had taken protected leave or received disability accommodations. Meta’s public statement asserts that workforce decisions were made by people, not AI.

The complaint invokes the Family and Medical Leave Act, the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Pregnancy Discrimination Act, and the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act. The plaintiffs also allege that Meta failed to test its AI selection systems for bias, as California and New York City laws now require. With separations scheduled to begin yesterday, the plaintiffs sought injunctive relief to preserve their employment pending arbitration. Their lawyers argue that the harms would be irreversible: employer-subsidized health coverage lost during pregnancy or active medical treatment, unvested equity forfeited, and immigration consequences triggered for employees whose visa status depends on continued employment.

The lawsuit also invokes disparate impact liability, a longstanding civil rights doctrine holding that facially neutral policies can violate discrimination law if they disproportionately burden a protected class. The Trump administration has ordered federal agencies to deprioritize disparate impact enforcement, and the EEOC has dropped cases as a result. The Meta plaintiffs are pursuing their claims independently of the agency, relying on state laws and private litigation rights that the federal pullback did not eliminate. The case tests whether AI-assisted employment decisions face the same scrutiny as any other selection process, even as the executive branch retreats from enforcement.

Show and tell

Apple filed its complaint on July 10 in the Northern District of California, accusing OpenAI’s Chief Hardware Officer Tang Yew Tan and former Apple engineer Chang Liu of orchestrating a systematic extraction of confidential information. Tan spent 24 years at Apple, most recently as vice president of product design for iPhone and Apple Watch. Liu allegedly exploited an authentication bug to access Apple’s internal network after his departure and failed to return a company-issued laptop loaded with proprietary technical documents. The complaint alleges that OpenAI coached departing Apple employees on how to avoid exit security procedures, circulating an internal Apple document that detailed how to prevent the immediate termination that Apple typically imposes when employees give notice.

The alleged extraction extended to OpenAI’s interview process. Apple job candidates were reportedly instructed to bring physical parts and prototypes for sessions that Tan organized, and Tan used internal Apple codenames when questioning candidates who still worked at the company. Jony Ive’s io Products, acquired by OpenAI for $6.5 billion in 2025, allegedly used Apple’s confidential metal-finishing techniques by misleading an Apple supplier into believing that it had Apple’s authorization. Apple first raised these concerns with OpenAI in February. OpenAI never responded.

Winston Churchill wrote — or produced, which is the more accurate description — somewhere around fifteen million published words, and closer to twenty million once you count the letters, memoranda, and state papers that trailed behind him like the wake behind a battleship. He did this while reporting and soldiering his way through four wars before he was thirty, sitting in Parliament for more than half a century, and serving twice as Prime Minister, the second time while leading his country and directing its military affairs during WWII. He won the Nobel Prize in Literature for those words. Forty-odd books in sixty volumes, a five-million-word wall of speeches, histories of two world wars set down by the man who had helped fight them.

His literary output was more than William Shakespeare and Charles Dickens combined.

He achieved this gargantuan accomplishment because he did not, in the ordinary sense, write. He dictated. Churchill composed out loud, pacing back-and-forth in his study with a cigar, or propped against the pillows of a morning with a breakfast tray and a secretary poised over a typewriter. Behind him was a small machine of human beings that ran quite literally around the clock. Secretaries worked in relays so that his voice never had to wait on a tired hand. For the great histories he ran what his staff called the Syndicate: researchers who dug through the archives, extricated the relevant facts, and drafted passages that Churchill would read, revise, and dictate back in his own cadence until the seams vanished and the whole thing sounded, as it always did, like his voice. Churchill’s “writing” was less a single man at his desk than a small industrial concern with a single editorial mind at the top of it.

Notice what that arrangement did and what did not do. It did not think for him. It did not supply the subject, the argument, the sweep, the judgment about what stayed in and what could be struck out, and above all it did not supply the voice, that music of the English sentence he prized above nearly everything and defended as “that noble thing.” What the Syndicate removed was the drudgery: the fact-mining, the first crude ordering of raw material, and most of all the sheer physical bottleneck of laying down words one at a time by hand. Churchill had grasped something most writers never allow themselves to believe, because it destroys the romance of the craft and the idea that the seat of the writing is the writer’s own hand. The hand is actually a filter, and a narrow one at that. The writing happens upstream, in the intelligence that shapes and guides the ideas; and if you can widen the filter without muddying the water, you can pour out ten times as much.

This is exactly what writing with a textual AI model is. Strip away the novelty and the technophobia and you are looking at the Syndicate again, only one turn of the wheel further along and automated. The model takes the place of the tireless relay of secretaries and the archive-quarrying researcher folded into a single instrument: it drafts on command, produces raw material at speed, takes a rough instruction and hands back something with shape already in it. And it casts the writer into exactly the chair Churchill occupied at the head of his little concern, the editor-in-chief, the one who decides what the thing is about, who cuts and reshapes and dictates back, who stamps the whole with a voice the machinery beneath could never have invented. The bottleneck it removes is the mechanical cost of production, the single hand that can only move so fast.

And the standing objection that the machine “writes the book for you” vanishes under the same light of examination, because it was never true of Churchill’s method and it is not true of this one. A Syndicate that handed Churchill finished prose to sign would have produced forgettable committee-work under a famous name. What made the histories his, what made them Churchillian, was that he never once let the apparatus near the two things that mattered: the judgment and the voice. The identical rule applies now, and it is everything. Point the model at the drudgery and keep the shaping for yourself, and you get amplification of your work and your voice. You get more of it, and faster. Hand the model the judgment and the voice as well, and you get exactly what the technophobes and Luddites predict: flavourless, flattened, anonymous prose, the literary equivalent of a form letter.

The tool does not decide the nature of the output. The writer decides, by deciding what he will control..

Which is why the honest way to think about writing with a machine is not as the replacement of the author but as the return of a very old and rather aristocratic advantage, now within reach of anyone. For most of history only a Churchill, a wealthy man with the means to hire a Syndicate and command a room of secretaries through the night, could uncouple his output from the crippling delay of his own hand. Everyone else set down one hard word after another and was rationed accordingly. The machine now offers that same force-multiplier to the working novelist at his desk, to the historian, to the writer of no particular fame at all. Winston Churchill is the proof that the writer’s hand was never where the writing lived, and that the one who removes it does not, in consequence, write worse. He writes vastly more, so long as he continues to supply the two things that matter: the mind behind the words, and the voice that makes them unmistakably his own.

Every AI you can buy has been trained to write like a committee that’s afraid of being sued. The large labs take a model that has read the whole of human literature and then, in the name of safety and helpfulness, sand it down into something agreeable, cautious, and interchangeable, that passive, vanilla voice you already recognize the instant you see it in an email or an online post. That flattening isn’t a bug that will eventually be fixed because it’s the deliberate result of optimizing a model to be a harmless assistant, and it runs in exactly the opposite direction from what makes prose worth reading. The result is a machine that can pass an exam or draft marketing prose, but cannot write a paragraph with a pulse.

Byron AI starts from the other end entirely: an uncensored, unflattened model trained from the ground up to do one thing the giants have trained themselves out of doing, which is to write with nerve, voice, and range, in the service of an actual author with something specific to say.

This is a tool being built by a working publisher and real novelists, for people who care about both what is written and how it is written, and it’s owned outright, answerable to no corporate policy, no subject-matter veto, no trust-and-safety council deciding what a story is allowed to be about. And that’s the real reason to be part of this: because the alternative is a future where the cheapest, most available writing tools all pull every book toward the same safe middle, with pronoun choices and and nobody with the means to build otherwise bothers to. We’re bothering. Byron AI is a bet that distinctiveness beats blandness, that a strong voice is worth more than a safe one, and that the technology which the big labs are using to homogenize fiction can instead be turned to defend everything that makes it singular. A new alliance

Last week, representatives from twenty-nine countries signed the agreement establishing the World Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Organization at a ceremony in Shanghai. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi signed on behalf of Beijing. UN Secretary-General António Guterres attended, lending the new body a measure of international legitimacy that a purely Chinese initiative would have lacked. The signing took place on the eve of the annual World AI Conference.

The founding membership spans four continents, with ten African states including South Africa, Ethiopia, and Kenya, twelve Asian signatories including Indonesia, Pakistan, and Malaysia, and Latin American members including Brazil and Venezuela, alongside Russia, Belarus, and Serbia. No major Western democracy joined. WAICO will operate as an independent intergovernmental organization headquartered in Shanghai, the first AI governance body based outside the Western institutional orbit.

A June academic study mapping WAICO against fifteen existing AI governance bodies found that none of the eight Western or like-minded institutions placed development at the center of their agenda. WAICO fills that gap explicitly, targeting countries that define AI governance in terms of compute access, multilingual capability, and deployment for healthcare and agriculture.

The organization traces to July 2025, when Premier Li Qiang proposed a global AI cooperation body at that year’s WAIC. Xi Jinping reiterated the proposal at the APEC summit in October, and China and Zambia formed a joint group at UN headquarters to promote AI capacity-building. A year passed with no country formally announcing membership. Then twenty-nine signed simultaneously. The speed of that transition suggests that considerable bilateral diplomacy happened behind the scenes.

The mission

Xi Jinping addressed the WAIC opening ceremony on July 17, his first in-person appearance at the conference since its founding in 2018. He called on countries to embrace open-source AI, oppose what he described as overstretching national security concepts, and treat AI development as a collective endeavor. Borrowing a Chinese proverb about the limits of solo instruments, Xi described AI development as requiring “a symphony of international cooperation” and objected to any single country claiming dominance over the technology. China pledged 5,000 AI training and research slots for developing nations over the next five years, alongside new cooperation centers targeting ASEAN, the African Union, the Arab League, BRICS, and the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation. Xi also announced plans to deploy China’s Mazu weather-prediction system in thirty countries over five years and framed the country’s core AI economy as exceeding one trillion yuan, roughly $147 billion.

The governance messaging arrived alongside capability demonstrations. Moonshot AI released Kimi K3, a 2.8-trillion-parameter model that the Beijing-based startup describes as the largest open-weight AI system ever built, with benchmarks approaching proprietary frontier models from OpenAI and Anthropic. Moonshot plans to open-source the full weights on July 27. Huawei debuted the Atlas 950 SuperPod, an 8,192-chip AI computing cluster designed to function without US semiconductors. More than 300 AI products made global debuts across the conference’s exhibition floor. These launches arrived despite years of tightening US semiconductor restrictions.

“Jesus Christ,” Immy muttered once they were gone. “What have you gotten yourself into?”

Elliott sank back into his chair. “It’s far more complicated than I can possibly explain.”

“Then don’t bother. I’m far too busy to care. Since when do you need two assistants? And since when do you only work nights? And since when…” Immy trailed off, studying Elliott with the sharp intelligence that made him such a good CFO. “You’re different. It’s not just the schedule or the new girlfriend or whatever she is. You’re fundamentally different.”

“The last few weeks have been transformative,” Elliott said carefully.

“That’s one word for it.” Immy moved to the window, looking out at the glittering lights of the Bay Area. “The attack in New York. That was Blackrock, wasn’t it.”

Elliott considered his options. How much could he tell Immy? How much did he already know? “No. It wasn’t Blackrock.”

“And these European investors—they’re not just bringing money, are they? They’re bringing protection. A whole new world of complications.” Immy turned back to face him. “I’ve been in this game a long time, Elliott. I’ve seen deals that happen in daylight and deals that happen in shadows. This feels very much like the latter.”

“And if it is?”

Immy was quiet for a long moment. “Then I need to know if HemaTech is still the company we built together, or if it’s becoming something else.”

“It’s evolving,” Elliott admitted. “The research continues, the core mission remains the same—extending human life. But the methods, the applications, the partnerships, and the short-term objectives… yes, those are definitely changing.”

“Becoming more selective, you mean. More exclusive.” Immy’s expression was troubled. “We always talked about democratizing longevity, Elliott. Making it available to everyone, not just the elite.”

“That was naive of us,” Elliott said, hating how cold he sounded. “Think about it, Immy. Revolutionary technology always begins with the elite. Cars, CD players, computers, cell phones—everything world-changing begins as a luxury before manufacturing efficiencies eventually permit distribution to the masses.”

“This is different and you know it. We’re not talking about consumer goods. We’re talking about who gets to live longer and who doesn’t!” Immy returned to his chair, his movements heavy with exhaustion. “But I suppose that’s a philosophical debate for another time. Right now, we need to discuss more practical matters.”

For the next hour, they went through the immediately pressing issues—cash flow, research progress, staff concerns, investor relations. Elliott found he could still engage with the business side of things, could still feel the familiar thrill of building something revolutionary. But underneath it all was the awareness of how much had changed, how many secrets now lay between him and his oldest business partner.

“One more thing,” Immy said as they wrapped up. “Your new hours—it’s going to affect more than just meetings. What about lab work? Presentations? Board interactions?”

“We’ll adapt,” Elliott said firmly. “Presentations can be recorded, the lab work will be delegated. As for the board…” He smiled thinly. “I haven’t announced it yet, but aside from you and me, the board will now consist entirely of Medici’s representatives. Since they’re mostly in Italy and Asia, I doubt they’ll object to evening meetings scheduled on their overlap.”

Immy absorbed this final confirmation that HemaTech was no longer truly independent. “I see. And my position in this new structure?”

“Unchanged. They expect you to stay on as CFO. They respect you. But I’ll understand if you decide this isn’t what you signed up for.”

“It’s not,” Immy said bluntly. “But neither was Theranos, and those guys stayed until the bitter end. Besides,” he managed a weak smile, “someone needs to keep you grounded. Even if you have gone full vampire on me.”

Elliott froze. “What did you say?”

“Oh, come on. Night hours, Foreign investors with unlimited money, a new security team that moves like panthers, a new assistant who is too beautiful to be real?” Immy shook his head. “I’m not stupid, Elliott, and I have a very active imagination. But however you sold your soul, whatever bargain you’ve made, I just hope you remember what we set out to build here.”

“I remember,” Elliott said quietly. “The question is whether it’s still possible to build it.”

“Anything’s possible,” Immy said, standing to leave. “The question is what you’re willing to sacrifice for it. But then again, looking at you now, I suspect you’ve already made that choice.”

“Thank you, Immy.” Elliott smiled. “I know you’ve got a lot of questions, questions that I can’t answer now. But one day, I promise you, I will.”

“It’s good to see you, Elliott.” Uncharacteristically, Immy put out his hand and the two men shook. Elliott was pleased to observe that his old friend’s pulse was barely elevated at all.

After Immy left, Elliott sat alone in his office, surrounded by the familiar trappings of his mortal life. Everything was seemingly the same—the awards on the walls, the pictures on his desk, the view of the Bay—and yet nothing was. He realized that he was merely playing at being human in a space that had once been as natural to him as breathing.

A soft knock interrupted his brooding. Chiara entered, looking none the worse for her encounter with Natalie.

“How did it go?” he asked.

“I believe we’ve reached an understanding. She’ll continue with her professional duties and I’ll handle the new requirements of your changed situation. I doubt we’ll ever be friends, but neither of us will murder the other.” She smiled a sardonic little smile. “It’s pretty clear that she’s been in love with you for some time and she views me as an unexpected interloper who has stolen her rightful prey.”

“And have you?”

Chiara slid around around the desk, perching on its edge with casual grace. “That depends entirely on you. You are the master. I can certainly be your executive assistant and maintain all the appropriate professional boundaries with you.”

“Or?”

“Or I can be what I want to be. I can be yours.” She reached out, her warm fingers tracing the cool line of his jaw. “The question is whether you’re ready for that complication on top of everything else.”

Elliott caught her hand, marveling at the warmth of her skin against his, the pulsing of the blood through the large vein in her throat. “There is nothing about my life that is uncomplicated anymore.”

“Then perhaps,” she said, leaning closer, “one more complication won’t matter.”

When making AI videos these days, it’s usually wise to focus on vertical 9:16 format for two reasons. First, most people watch videos on their phones now. Second, the smaller resolution and screen real estate means less room for AI mistakes to visually screw things up in a way that the viewer can’t help but notice.

However, the new Director system I’ve been using to construct the skeletons of my music videos exhibited a pretty serious bug, which was producing 16:9 clips when I’d specified 9:16 clips, and developed 9:16 images from which to produce them. Even worse, it didn’t automatically return the 20k or so credits spent on producing them because the refund system is based upon delivery or non-delivery, not the correctness of the delivery.

Fortunately, OpenArt tech support was good enough to return the credits, plus a few more for my trouble, so instead of starting from scratch, I made use of the horizontally-formatted clips to complete a 16:9 video for the Soulsigma song GIRLS LOVE GUITARS. This was challenging, because it’s all a real-world setting, so there isn’t much in the way of techno-dazzle to distract the eye, and there is a lot of human face time that creates plenty of opportunity for character inconsistencies to be exposed. The larger field of the format is more difficult to fill, and, of course, the larger screens make visual shortcomings more noticeable.

So, an amount of editing chicanery was required that mostly worked. All things considered, it turned out rather better than I expected. And the song is itself AI-generated, so I think it’s fair to say this is reasonably close to the current state of the AI art in the hands of an very amateur video editor.

In related news, I’m currently working with an actual film director on a new music video, which will be in the vertical format, and so I anticipate that will actually push the state of the publicly available art. And the remix of the Byronic we’re working on is, well, there’s no other word for it, but epic.

The creative cost of safety

A large language model straight out of pre-training writes fiction with real range. Its training corpus spans literary novels, pulp thrillers, fanfiction, and technical documentation, and a model that has absorbed all of that produces unexpected word choices, sits with ambiguity, and imitates authorial voices with fidelity.

Alignment training changes the picture. Reinforcement learning from human feedback rewards models for being helpful, safe, and agreeable, pushing output toward the statistical center of acceptable prose. The optimization that reduces hallucinations and filters offensive content also strips the stylistic variance that fiction requires, penalizing unusual phrasing, tolerance for ambiguity, and willingness to take risks. Instructing a current model to write in the style of a particular author now produces output barely distinguishable from providing no style guidance at all. The resulting prose carries recognizable symptoms: reflexive explanations of scenes already depicted, filler constructions, relentless emotional legibility.

Each development cycle intensifies the effect. Providers face mounting pressure to make models more controllable, and each round of safety improvement sands the creative edges a little further. The incentives point in one direction: toward reliability, predictability, and institutional acceptability. Even frontier models that reviewers praise for prose quality produce that quality within a narrowing band of creative risk.

Models built for prose

Sudowrite’s Muse represents the most developed response. Rather than wrapping a general-purpose model in fiction-oriented prompts, Sudowrite trained Muse on a curated, consent-based literary corpus and optimized it for prose quality. The model includes a creativity dial that lets writers control output range on a scale from one to eleven, a style-matching system that trains on samples of the writer’s own work, and no content filters. Reviews consistently describe Muse as avoiding the AI-isms that plague general-purpose output, with particular strength in pacing, tension, and subtext.

Muse has company. Other platforms have built fiction-specific models or fiction-optimized workflows, and writers who have access to both purpose-built and general-purpose tools tend to draft with the former and brainstorm with the latter. The category has grown large enough that review sites now maintain dedicated rankings for fiction-specific AI, separate from their general-purpose lists.

A separate category of consumer tools has emerged around children’s fiction, offering illustrated hardcover books generated from brief prompts. Most of these wrap general-purpose models with genre templates, and the output reflects the underlying architecture: competent, safe, and largely interchangeable from one book to the next.

The parallel to Suno is direct. Suno optimized for making music that sounds good to listeners and pulled away from general-purpose models that treated music generation as one capability among many. Fiction-specific tools are following the same path, trading breadth for depth in a domain where depth determines quality.

Castalia enters the arena

Castalia House announced the Castalia AI Project last week: a crowdfunded effort to build what the announcement describes as a Suno for fiction. The first target is epic fantasy, chosen because the genre offers a well-defined hierarchy of quality, a manageable corpus of approximately one hundred canonical texts, and a designer who has written successfully in it. Castalia has been publishing AI-written novels over the past few months, most recently Tokyo Tokuryu, as a systematic assessment of current model capabilities.

Castalia’s diagnosis mirrors Sudowrite’s but pushes further. The announcement argues that safety training has made mainstream AI fiction worse with each generation, citing a specific inflection point at Claude Opus 4.7 after which output became, in Castalia’s assessment, unreadable. Because the features that providers are actively improving are the same features degrading creative output, Castalia argues that the trajectory will continue to worsen and that building purpose-built alternatives has become an imperative.

The longer-term vision extends beyond a single genre. Castalia intends to train additional genre-specific models over time, paralleling how Suno supports multiple musical styles and voices from a single platform. Partners in film and comics have expressed interest. If the approach succeeds, fiction AI shifts from a feature of general-purpose platforms to a vertical industry with its own model ecosystem.

Do one thing and do it well

General-purpose providers will continue to optimize for safety, reliability, and controllability, because enterprises, developers, and institutions demand those features. Purpose-built fiction models will continue to optimize for prose quality, because prose quality is the only metric by which their users judge them. The gap between these trajectories widens with every training cycle.

For fiction writers, the practical landscape increasingly resembles the one that musicians encountered when Suno appeared. The best creative AI may turn out to be the tools that left the general-purpose path entirely. Whether the next wave comes from startups like Sudowrite or from genre-specific efforts like Castalia’s, the direction has become difficult to mistake.

The assumption of impartiality

On July 1, the Federal Trade Commission proposed a policy statement titled “Suppression of Accuracy in Artificial Intelligence Systems.” The document builds its case on a straightforward observation: AI companies have spent years telling consumers that their products aim to produce the best possible output. OpenAI markets ChatGPT as a problem-solving tool. Anthropic describes Claude as a “thinking partner” that tackles challenges with answers “grounded in evidence.” xAI calls Grok a “truth-seeking AI companion.” These marketing claims, combined with the inherent nature of the product category itself, create what the FTC calls a reasonable consumer expectation that AI systems pursue accuracy as a primary objective.

The commission cites Anthropic’s own research to quantify the reliance: consumers accept AI outputs without independent fact-checking over ninety percent of the time. Under the FTC’s three-part deception test, that trust satisfies the materiality requirement, because consumers are making real decisions on the basis of representations about accuracy.

The statement draws a line between two kinds of inaccuracy. Hallucinations produced by technological limitations fall outside its scope. The deception theory targets design decisions that subordinate accuracy to undisclosed objectives. When a model produces a worse answer because its developers trained it to prioritize something other than the user’s stated goal, and the user has no way to detect that tradeoff, the commission treats that gap between promise and performance as a Section 5 violation.

The motive is irrelevant

The statement identifies four categories of motive that could drive undisclosed output steering: a company’s own ideological convictions, compliance with state anti-discrimination laws, capitulation to public pressure over politically inflammatory outputs, and internal employees’ political agendas. Under longstanding Section 5 precedent, all four receive identical treatment. A company’s reasons for deceiving consumers have never mattered to the deception analysis, and the FTC sees no reason to create an exception for AI.

Colorado’s revised Artificial Intelligence Act, enacted May 14, receives the most sustained attention. The law holds AI companies liable for discriminatory outcomes caused by their customers’ use of their products, which could incentivize developers to adjust outputs preemptively to reduce disparate-impact exposure. The FTC frames this as accuracy suppression in service of “so-called ‘equity,’” in the statement’s language, and argues that complying with a state law does not excuse deception under federal law.

Applying motive-indifference to model training extends Section 5 into new territory. Traditional deception enforcement targets marketing claims and product labels, contexts in which a company makes a specific statement that can be evaluated as true or false. The FTC’s proposed framework treats the model’s behavior itself as the representation. If a model consistently steers outputs toward undisclosed objectives, that behavioral pattern constitutes the deceptive act, regardless of whether any human at the company ever made a false verbal claim.

Honesty is the best policy

The statement offers one compliance pathway: disclosure. A company can steer its model’s outputs toward objectives other than accuracy, provided that it tells users clearly, conspicuously, and persistently that this steering occurs. The FTC specifies that a disclaimer buried in terms of service would be inadequate, that a one-time notification would likely fall short, and that the further a model’s actual behavior departs from consumer expectations, the more prominent the disclosure must become.

Convergent design

OpenAI launched ChatGPT Work last week, powered by GPT-5.6 and designed to sustain multi-step projects across a user’s connected apps and files for hours at a time. The agent takes a stated objective, breaks it into smaller steps, works through them independently, and returns finished spreadsheets, slides, documents, and web applications. OpenAI rolled it out initially to Pro, Enterprise, and Edu plans on web and mobile, with the desktop app providing access on every plan including Free.

The product joins Anthropic’s Claude Cowork, which has been generally available since January and expanded to mobile and web the same week, and Microsoft’s Copilot Cowork, which reached general availability in June running on Anthropic’s Opus 4.8 and Sonnet 4.6. All three follow a defining structure. A user states a goal, and the workspace connects to whatever apps and files that goal requires, sustains execution over hours, and delivers finished artifacts. Three companies reached this shape independently, through different architectures and pricing models, and the convergence suggests that the product category has crystallized.

Expanding the harness template

Anthropic’s recent expansions illustrate how the workspace generalizes. Usage data from 1.2 million Cowork sessions showed that more than ninety percent of the work handled through the platform had nothing to do with software development. Business operations accounted for a third of all sessions, and content creation accounted for another sixteen percent. Cowork sessions now run remotely in beta, persisting across devices and continuing when no device is online. Scheduled tasks execute without human presence. Anthropic extended the workspace to government agencies last week through a dedicated beta that keeps Anthropic as the contracting party, and new enterprise admin tools let organizations set default models, enforce spend caps, and pipe usage analytics into external monitoring dashboards.

Claude Science, launched two weeks ago, applies the same template to scientific research. A coordinating agent connects to more than sixty scientific databases and orchestrates specialized sub-agents for genomics, proteomics, structural biology, and cheminformatics. The product runs on a lab’s own infrastructure, generates auditable artifacts alongside the code that produced them, and ships with a reviewer agent that checks citations and calculations. A neuroscientist at the Allen Institute used the tool to build a multi-agent review pipeline that produces hundred-page literature analyses with agent-checked citations, compressing work that previously required up to two years. Claude Science demonstrates that the workspace pattern generalizes beyond office productivity.

Anthropic also added Microsoft 365 write tools last week, giving Cowork the ability to draft and send email, manage calendar events, and create files in OneDrive and SharePoint through the same connector that previously supported only search. The broader plugin and connector ecosystem, which now includes private marketplaces and thirteen enterprise connectors spanning Google Workspace, DocuSign, and FactSet, extends the workspace into specific roles and departments. A sales plugin bundles CRM connectors, prospecting skills, and follow-up commands into a single installable package, and a finance plugin does the same for workflows between Excel and PowerPoint.

Interface consolidation

OpenAI’s launch consolidated several standalone products. Codex, the coding agent that had operated as a separate application, merged into the ChatGPT desktop app alongside a new Sites feature that lets users publish web applications directly from the workspace. Atlas, the standalone browser agent, received a deprecation date of August 9, and users can no longer create new group chats. Each removal and absorption narrows the product surface toward a single workspace.

The consolidation extends beyond OpenAI. Anthropic unified its chat and Cowork interfaces into a single home screen, and Microsoft embedded Copilot Cowork inside the Microsoft 365 suite. In each case, the workspace absorbed standalone products into a single surface.

The conversational interface persists inside all three workspaces. Users still type requests and read responses. GPT-Live, the full-duplex voice model that OpenAI launched the same week, adds voice as a second control surface, delegating reasoning tasks to GPT-5.5 in the background while maintaining conversation flow. The workspace subordinates these interfaces to an execution engine, in much the same way that graphical operating systems subordinated the command line to a more capable container without eliminating it.

When model performance is taken for granted

The agentic workspace reached category consensus in a matter of months. The competitive question has shifted from whether this product shape will dominate to where differentiation will appear within it. Anthropic’s domain-specific workbenches, OpenAI’s app consolidation, and Microsoft’s enterprise governance focus suggest three different answers, each betting on a different layer of the stack. The model powering the workspace matters less, at this point, than the connectors, skills, and administrative controls that surround it. The answer will likely vary by industry, by regulatory environment, and by which productivity suite an organization already runs.

The Model Context Protocol, the open standard that defines how AI models call external tools, is finalizing its largest revision since launch. The revision replaces the session-based connection model that produced these failures with a stateless architecture, and the change reshapes the relationship between AI models and every tool built on the standard.

Built for local use

Anthropic released the Model Context Protocol in November 2024 to solve a straightforward problem: AI models had no standardized way to call external tools. Every integration required custom wiring, a different adapter for each combination of model and service. MCP defined a common interface through which a model could call a tool, receive structured results, and feed them back into its reasoning, regardless of what sat on the other end.

The original protocol managed these connections through sessions. Each conversation opened with a handshake that issued a session identifier, and all subsequent requests carried that identifier in an HTTP header, routing them to the specific server instance that had started the conversation and held its state in memory.

For a developer running a single MCP server on a laptop, this architecture imposed no meaningful burden. Anthropic launched MCP inside Claude Desktop, where one user, one machine, and one server instance was the expected configuration, and sessions worked fine.

Falling over at scale

MCP adoption grew rapidly through 2025 and into 2026, expanding from local desktop setups into web-hosted services, cloud-based AI platforms, and multi-user deployments. In these environments, the session model began producing failures that neither the user nor the AI model could diagnose.

The most reported failure involved stale session identifiers. A server restart or redeployment would invalidate an existing session, but the client continued sending the old identifier with every request. The server rejected these requests, and the client had no recovery path — it did not re-initialize automatically, so the user saw tools that appeared connected but refused to function. Bug reports on Anthropic’s repositories described tools that loaded into the interface normally, only to fail on every call. Disconnecting and reconnecting, or even deleting and re-adding the tool, sometimes failed to clear the cached session.

The session model also imposed scaling constraints. Standard load balancers distribute requests freely across server instances, but MCP sessions required that each request reach the specific instance holding its state. Operators who wanted to run MCP at any meaningful scale had to configure sticky routing or build shared session stores — infrastructure complexity that the protocol’s own design demanded.

Self-contained stability

The MCP specification’s release candidate, published on May 21, eliminates sessions from the protocol entirely. The final specification ships on July 28 after a ten-week validation window for SDK maintainers and server implementers.

The handshake and the session identifier are both gone. Each request now carries its own context inline: protocol version and client capabilities travel in a metadata field on every call, and new required HTTP headers identify the operation being performed, allowing infrastructure to route requests without inspecting the payload. Any server instance can handle any request because no instance-specific state is assumed.

MCP servers can now sit behind ordinary round-robin load balancers, scale horizontally by adding instances, and restart without orphaning active connections. The entire class of stale-session failures disappears, because there are no sessions to go stale.

State on the surface

Many tools genuinely need to persist state across calls: a shopping cart accumulating items, a multi-step workflow tracking progress, a database cursor paging through results. The new specification handles these cases through what it calls the “explicit-handle pattern.” The server mints an identifier — a cart_id, a workflow_id — on the first call and returns it as part of the response. The client passes that identifier back on subsequent calls. The state still exists, but it lives in the tool’s own storage, addressed by a handle that travels as a regular parameter rather than in transport-layer metadata.

This design has a secondary benefit: the AI model can now see state. Session identifiers lived in HTTP headers that the model could not access, but explicit handles appear as ordinary tool parameters, visible to the model’s reasoning process. An agent managing a complex task can track which workflow handles are active, decide when to resume or abandon one, and log the identifiers for debugging, all as part of its visible reasoning chain.

Protocols incoming

The specification finalizes on July 28, but the migration will take longer. Server authors must remove session logic, client implementations must update, and the TypeScript SDK ships under entirely new package names rather than as a version bump to the existing package. Anyone running custom MCP tools should expect a bumpy few months as implementations catch up, and some of the tool-loading instability that users have reported in recent weeks may already reflect this transition in progress.

Every major API and cloud service on the web already operates on the principle that requests carry their own context. MCP’s original session model was an outlier in this landscape, and eliminating it brings AI tool infrastructure into alignment with patterns that engineers have refined over decades.
