Fifteen days, zero experience

Leo, an iOS engineer at TikTok with nine years of mobile development experience, had never built a game. He entered the 2026 Vibejam, a competition hosted by Pieter Levels in which ninety percent or more of the code must come from AI, and won the $25,000 grand prize with Capybara Delivery, a Three.js driving game. The finished product features a capybara on a scooter delivering stacked food across a handcrafted city, complete with multiplayer support, a weather system, and cinematic cutscenes, all assembled in fifteen days.

His workflow ran two to three Claude Code sessions simultaneously, each working on a different part of the codebase to avoid merge conflicts. Claude Code, running on Opus 4.7, produced 188 commits and 27,000 lines of code over those fifteen days. Leo spent his time brainstorming concepts, tuning game feel through a debug panel, and placing cameras for the cinematic sequences, while one long-running session handled bugs that required the full project history.

The largest productivity gain came from asking the AI to build development tools that Leo then used to construct the game. Claude Code produced a terrain editor with brushes for raising, lowering, and painting ground textures, a procedural road builder that generated sidewalks and light poles, and a cutscene editor with a timeline and drag-and-drop camera placement. The game’s map, a city with suburbs, countryside, and landmarks riffing on Christ the Redeemer and the Golden Gate Bridge, emerged from hours of manual work inside those AI-built editors.

Interfaces exposed

Epic Games shipped Unreal Engine 5.8 on June 17 with a built-in MCP server plugin that exposes the editor’s core systems to any compatible AI client. Through this plugin, an AI assistant can navigate Blueprints, manipulate assets, build levels, and adjust materials directly inside the editor, operating the engine rather than generating code for a developer to paste. Community-driven MCP implementations appeared during the mid-May preview, before the stable release had landed.

At SIGGRAPH 2026, six professional creative applications announced MCP server integrations in a single conference week: Blender, Unreal Engine, Adobe Creative Cloud, SideFX Houdini 22, Boris FX Silhouette, and Foundry Griptape. Unity’s community MCP server reached 14,900 GitHub stars and version 10.3 by October, offering 288 tools that span scene creation, shader editing, profiling, and builds. In April, Anthropic had launched nine production-ready connectors under the banner Claude for Creative Work, covering Blender, Adobe Creative Cloud, Ableton, Autodesk Fusion, and SketchUp.

Community developers outpaced the official vendors. StraySpark’s commercial Blender MCP server offers 556 tools across 39 categories, and the open-source blender-mcp project had accumulated 21,000 GitHub stars before Blender’s own official server launched with version 5.1. The productive pattern that emerged in 2026 connects multiple MCP servers in a single agent session, so that the AI can move assets from Blender into Unreal Engine without the human switching applications.

Describe the mix, hear the result

TwelveTake Studios updated its REAPER MCP server to version 1.9.3 on October 21, bringing the tool count to 172 across routing, MIDI cleanup, loudness measurement, comping, and dialogue assembly. A sidechain setup that normally requires navigating three separate REAPER windows becomes a single plain-language request, after which the AI adds the compressor, creates the send, sets the channel routing, and configures the input. Every change appears as a named step in REAPER’s undo history, and the server passes 349 automated test checks before each release.

The DAW MCP project extends this approach to Ableton Live and Bitwig Studio, letting Claude read existing clips and write new MIDI content into the open session. One producer assembled a complete spoken dialogue through REAPER MCP by describing how two voices should alternate across tracks with half-second gaps between each line.

Across both domains, AI stopped generating files for creative professionals to import and started operating the host application’s own controls. The standard that made this transition possible, Anthropic’s Model Context Protocol from November 2024, defines how AI assistants discover and call tools that external software exposes. Fifteen months after its introduction, MCP reached the creative mainstream.

Hands-free across the board

These integrations changed the job description. Leo spent his fifteen days brainstorming, playtesting, and placing cameras while Claude Code wrote 27,000 lines beneath him. TwelveTake’s pitch to REAPER users follows the same model, inviting producers to describe the job in plain English and supervise the result. The creative decisions remain human, and the mechanical path from decision to execution has a new handler.

A hostile runway

Anthropic told investors that third-quarter revenue reached $16.8 billion, up from $11.5 billion in the prior quarter, and that the company is profitable on an adjusted basis. The Wall Street Journal reported first-half revenue of $16.3 billion against a net loss exceeding eighty billion dollars. A seventy-two-billion-dollar accounting charge on convertible bonds accounts for most of that loss. Investors will have to reconcile adjusted profitability with a GAAP loss of that magnitude once the full prospectus becomes public.

The market around Anthropic has gone cold. South Korean data-center firm Elice fell thirty-three percent on its first trading day, the worst opening for a sizable Korean IPO on record according to Bloomberg. Nscale, the British neocloud that filed for a US listing in September, faces investor pushback that has compressed its target valuation from thirty billion dollars to as low as sixteen billion, after Microsoft pulled out of a major chip-supply deal. CoreWeave is paying as much as thirteen percent on new debt. OpenAI, having ruled out a 2026 IPO, is racing to close a thirty-billion-dollar private raise at $1.4 trillion — timed, according to Reuters, to land before Anthropic prices its shares.

Cheaper than ever

The unit economics underneath these valuations have deteriorated throughout the year. The Silicon Data LLM Token Expenditure Index, a usage-weighted measure of the effective price per million tokens, fell from $2.07 at its May peak to $0.97 by the end of August, a decline exceeding fifty percent. Goldman Sachs noted that seventy-eight of the ninety-one hyperscaler bonds issued in 2026 were already trading below their issue price by late summer, and that hyperscaler return on invested capital had reached an all-time low. Competition drove the decline: open-weight models and intelligent routing platforms have shifted inference workloads toward cheaper alternatives, compressing the effective price without any single frontier provider announcing a cut.

Hyperscaler AI spending in 2026 is approaching six hundred billion dollars. Revenue from that infrastructure depends on token price multiplied by token volume. The first term has fallen by half in five months. The entire investment thesis rests on whether consumption can grow fast enough to compensate — whether, as with semiconductors and bandwidth before them, collapsing unit prices generate enough new demand to more than offset the decline. A company pricing an IPO in November cannot afford to wait for that question to resolve itself.

Blind spending

From the demand side, the evidence offers little reassurance. Gartner’s 2027 CIO and Technology Executive Agenda survey, conducted from May through July with 2,002 respondents, found that the likelihood of an AI use case succeeding remains roughly one in five. Alicia Mullery, a vice president and analyst at Gartner, delivered a three-word summary at the firm’s Orlando symposium last week: “Volume is not value.”

Welcoming the machines

Walmart CEO John Furner announced the Walmart Agent Gateway at the Masters of Scale Summit on October 21, a server built on Anthropic’s Model Context Protocol that gives approved agents from ChatGPT, Gemini, and Muse structured access to Walmart and Sam’s Club inventory and checkout. Customers need not share personal information or purchase history with the agent directly; the Gateway mediates the connection. Agent Profiles, rolling out next month, let customers authorize each agent with a dedicated profile, set spending caps or require per-transaction approval, and track agent purchases separately from their own. The Gateway’s terms specify that agents cannot take actions beyond the shopper’s intent, cannot access payment information, and Walmart’s returns policy covers agent-initiated purchases, including cases where an agent fails to act as intended.

Shopify extended WebMCP to checkout in September, adding structured tools that let agents read checkout state, update fields, and submit orders. The buyer must still confirm the total and authorize submission on the page before any purchase completes. AI-driven new orders on the platform grew nearly 200% year over year, against roughly 12% growth for traditional organic search, providing an early measure of what agent-accessible retail captures.

Sierra and Meta published the Personal Agent Protocol on October 6, an OAuth-based open standard with 35 design partners including Walmart, Shopify, Stripe, Visa, Mastercard, and PayPal. Under the protocol, a personal agent authenticates with a business through OAuth, and the business defines what that agent can access. A v0.1 specification is due later this month. Visa launched its Trusted Agent Protocol in June, claiming coverage of approximately 175 million merchants, while Google introduced the Universal Commerce Protocol and Agent Payments Protocol at I/O, and Mastercard shipped Agent Pay. The industry produced four competing standards for agent commerce in under five months.

Privileging Alexa

Amazon began blocking Meta’s Muse from its platform on September 20, displaying warnings that continued access by an unauthorized AI agent violates its conditions of use. The company has since expanded those restrictions to agents from ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity, and sued Perplexity over its Comet shopping agent in November 2025. Amazon won a preliminary injunction against Perplexity in March, but the Ninth Circuit vacated it in August, ruling that Amazon had failed to show that the agent, rather than the user, accessed its systems. That ruling undercut Amazon’s core legal argument: that an AI agent’s activity constitutes unauthorized computer access under federal law.

Amazon builds its own shopping agents through Alexa, which can add items to carts and complete purchases on other retailers’ sites. Amazon’s agents reach every retailer’s inventory. Competitors’ agents reach everyone except Amazon.

Compounding commitments

Stripe appears in the partner lists of both Sierra’s Personal Agent Protocol and Visa’s Trusted Agent Protocol, positioning itself as payment infrastructure that functions regardless of which standard prevails. Shopify has built checkout tools for both server-side MCP and browser-based WebMCP. The payment and commerce layers have committed to agent commerce as a retail channel, and these commitments carry the weight of real integrations.

Each protocol defines its own authentication, payment, and session models, and the integrations that developers build against these standards create network effects. Every agent connection built against Walmart’s Gateway or Shopify’s checkout routes purchasing activity through platforms where agents can operate. The longer Amazon excludes itself from this infrastructure, the more purchasing activity flows through its competitors.

The costs of changing course

Amazon’s marketplace remains the largest in American retail. Its blocking strategy is a wager that controlling the customer relationship outweighs the cost of being the one major destination that agents cannot reach. The rest of the industry has placed a different bet, and the infrastructure behind that bet accumulates quickly. Walmart ships Agent Profiles next month, the Personal Agent Protocol’s v0.1 specification lands this month, and Shopify’s checkout tools are already live. Amazon’s window to reverse course without significant cost narrows with each new integration.

The data center in a box

At GTC Berlin last week, Nvidia unveiled DSX POD, a reference design that packages seven Vera Rubin NVL72 racks inside a shipping container. Each container holds 504 Rubin GPUs alongside networking, cabling, and liquid cooling, all pre-assembled and factory-tested before shipment. Nvidia claims that this approach reduces site deployment from roughly six months to fourteen days. Seventeen partners, including Dell, HPE, and Schneider Electric, plan to ship these containerized AI factories worldwide in early 2027, with analysts estimating that each Vera Rubin rack may cost upward of seven million dollars.

DSX POD rests on Vera Rubin, Nvidia’s third-generation rack-scale architecture. The core unit, the NVL72, pairs 72 Rubin GPUs with 36 Vera CPUs and delivers 3.6 exaflops of FP4 inference per rack, roughly 3.3 times the Blackwell generation’s output. Dedicated companion systems handle agentic orchestration, low-latency inference, AI-native storage, and rack-to-rack networking. This five-system design reflects Nvidia’s assessment that AI workloads have diversified beyond model training into categories with distinct hardware requirements. Each rack draws 190 to 230 kilowatts and requires liquid cooling, up from roughly 40 kilowatts for an air-cooled Hopper-generation rack two years ago. Over successive product generations, Nvidia’s unit of sale has moved from a chip to a server to a rack to a factory-assembled building.

Challengers across the board

AMD introduced Helion at the Open Compute Project Global Summit earlier this month, an open rack blueprint for agentic AI workloads. Helion builds on AMD’s existing Helios solution for training and inference, extending the company’s open-platform approach into a workload category it treats as architecturally distinct. The design supports CPU-only configurations with up to 32,768 Zen 6 EPYC cores, or mixed setups combining EPYC processors with Instinct MI350P GPUs. AMD argues that many agentic workloads, from personal assistants to enterprise applications to code execution, need CPU density more than GPU acceleration. The company plans to contribute the Helion specification to the Open Compute Project, with partner rack configurations expected in November.

Tenstorrent closed a $1.5 billion Series E last week at a $6.2 billion post-money valuation, more than doubling its December 2024 mark. The Toronto-founded company, led by veteran chip architect Jim Keller, builds RISC-V AI processors rather than GPUs. RISC-V is an open instruction set with no licensing dependency on any single CPU vendor. Tenstorrent’s Galaxy Blackhole servers reached general availability in April, packing 32 Blackhole chips into a single server delivering roughly 23 petaflops of AI compute. The round drew Fidelity, ARK Invest, Morgan Stanley, and SanDisk, though no customers have been publicly named. At $6.2 billion, the valuation prices a bet on the category rather than a proven order book.

As more accelerator families reach production, data centers will run mixed silicon. Upscale AI, backed by Nvidia, announced Token Fabric, a networking platform that connects processors from different vendors within the same facility. The first components ship in Q4 2026.

The parallel supply chain

A Chinese laboratory completed pretraining of a 1.6-trillion-parameter model on approximately fifty thousand domestically manufactured accelerators, with no Nvidia silicon anywhere in the training run. Architecture details and independent benchmarks remain unpublished, but the run establishes that frontier-scale pretraining can proceed on hardware the Western supply chain does not touch. ASML and TSMC have both warned that AI silicon demand exceeds global supply through at least 2028, and a credible non-Western path to frontier training reshapes the commercial calculus for every buyer in the market.

The vertical advantage

Open rack blueprints, RISC-V inference silicon, and non-Western frontier training all exist as genuine technical paths that were absent at this scale two years ago. AMD Helion configurations ship in November, Tenstorrent has raised $6.2 billion without naming a customer, and China’s trillion-parameter training run lacks independent benchmarks. Nvidia has seventeen partners manufacturing containerized Vera Rubin factories for delivery in early 2027. The supply constraints that ASML and TSMC have warned of may eventually push buyers toward second sources, turning architectural experiments into production-scale alternatives. For now, the AI compute landscape has fractured along commercial, architectural, and geopolitical lines, and the company that ships complete systems continues to set the pace.

Revisiting the foundations

Last week, the PHP Foundation released emergency patches for PHP2Shell, a pair of remote code execution vulnerabilities in the language’s core engine that scored 9.2 on the CVSS severity scale. That code had persisted in PHP’s memory-management layer for more than a decade. Researchers at security firm Calif discovered the flaws in August using GPT-5.6 Sol through OpenAI’s Patch the Planet initiative. Wiz Research independently found them days later using Gemini 4 Argon. PHP powers an estimated seventy percent of server-side websites, and Wiz co-founder Ami Luttwak called PHP2Shell the most severe AI-discovered vulnerability to date.

PHP2Shell crowned a year of AI-driven discovery across the software stack. In June, autonomous security startup depthfirst ran an AI agent across FFmpeg’s 1.5 million lines of C code and reported twenty-one previously unknown vulnerabilities, some dating to 2003, for approximately one thousand dollars in compute. Anthropic’s Mythos model, operating through its restricted Glasswing program, had independently uncovered a sixteen-year-old H.264 flaw in the same codebase for roughly ten times that cost. At Pwn2Own Berlin in May, researchers demonstrated forty-seven unique zero-day vulnerabilities and earned $1.29 million in payouts. The competition introduced its first AI-specific categories, and coding tools that included Codex and Cursor fell alongside inference middleware and AI databases.

Arming both sides

The same capability serves the other side. In May, Google’s Threat Intelligence Group documented the first confirmed AI-generated zero-day exploit used in the wild, a 2FA bypass whose code carried hallucinated CVSS scores and textbook-format docstrings that betrayed its origin. A September GTIG report found that zero-day exploitation rose from an average of eight per month in 2025 to eleven in 2026, spiking to twenty-two in August. AI-discovered vulnerabilities proved twice as likely to enable remote code execution as the general CVE pool, at fifty percent versus twenty-six.

This compression from disclosure to exploitation appeared in individual cases. CVE-2026-1731, a BeyondTrust flaw discovered autonomously by Hacktron’s AI research agent, drew exploitation from one threat cluster within four days of public disclosure and from five more within seven. CrowdStrike’s annual threat report documented an eighty-nine percent year-over-year increase in AI-enabled adversary operations.

Robots v.s. volunteers

The economics of discovery and remediation have diverged. Depthfirst spent approximately one thousand dollars to surface twenty-one FFmpeg zero-days in a codebase that human researchers had examined for two decades. The volunteer maintainers who must triage, validate, and patch those findings operate under no comparable cost advantage. AI-generated vulnerability reports are accumulating faster than open-source patch pipelines can absorb them.

Shigeru Miyamoto is one of the greatest game designers in history. As the lead designer at Nintendo, Donkey Kong, The Legend of Zelda, Mario Bros. and Star Fox are just a few of his dozens of game development credits. In a recent interview, he explained why he thinks AI is a great thing for game development.

Computers came along during my gen eration. Before that, people typed on typewriters. Then word processors came along, and so on. Tools have continued to evolve, one after another.

For example, designers used to learn something called lettering in school—the art of drawing letters beautifully, like the lettering on a poster If you could do that, you could already be called a designer. Similarly, if you could take a typeface that was popular overseas, adapt it to Japanese, and arrange it into a layout, you might be called a designer simply because you could do that.

But as computers continued to evolve, so did word-processing software. Eventually, computers could copy text from somewhere else, pull in images, and render lettering beautifully for you. As these technical and practical skills continued to advance, things like a person’s sense of layout and their individual design abilities finally began to come to the fore.

So even if a husband is a designer and his wife takes care of the household, it’s entirely possible that his wife actually has a better eye for design than he does. I sometimes worry about whether that might be true in my own case, too. As things like this happen more and more, the tools change the way we work.

That’s exactly what’s happening with Al. We’ve always made a distinction between creating something and doing the work.

When you set out to create something, you first put together the overall structure, right? Then you start arranging things toward a particular goal. Everything that comes after that is the actual work: filling in the gaps, polishing things up, and so on.

The tricky thing is that the work itself is enjoyable. There’s a sense of satisfaction that comes from making something, isn’t there? For writers and all of you here, too.

But what worries me is that people can become so satisfied with the work itself that they start mistaking that satisfaction for having created something good. That’s what I’m afraid of.

So, in that sense, the more Al takes care of all kinds of tasks for us, the more opportunities we all have to think seriously about what it really means to create something. I think that’s a very good thing.

Looking back at design history, there must have been plenty of designs that emerged simply by copying existing work. But those designs don’t really stand the test of time, do they?

What makes a design endure is that an individual sets out to design something with a clear intention. The computer then helps them carry out the work. That’s the underlying structure.

No matter how far technology advances that basic principle will remain—although, well, who knows? Al might eventually end up doing absolutely everything in that process, too. (Laughs.) But for now, I think there’s still plenty that we humans can do.

An AI skeptic imagines that the highly intelligent fraction of the population are facing an existential crisis.

In the past 3-4 months, people on the high end of the IQ distribution are the ones facing an existential crisis from AI. In the end, a major aspect of IQ comes down to having a vast memory and pulling bits and pieces from it without much effort and putting them together in new combinations. Here, the machine has pulled ahead. Those in the middle to lower end of the IQ range have been surpassed so completely that many of them are unable to discern what has happened. Finally, if you have reached dotage, then you probably feel a bit of Schadenfreude that this is trouble for the generations below you who were edging you out.

ESR himself weighed in to disagree.

I’m on the high end of the IQ spectrum, well into the nosebleed section, and this doesn’t reflect my experience nor that of my immediate peers. We’re not having an existential crisis. We’re going wonderfully nuts using AI as an accelerator for projects we’ve always wanted to do but couldn’t budget the time for.

I absolutely concur. I’m on the high side myself and I calculate that using AI correctly in both collaborative and critical roles gives me an effective 2 SD IQ boost. I’ve been able to accomplish tasks that should require 205-215 IQ, which I definitely do not have. The refutation of evolution by natural selection and the development of the core of Veriphysics pretty much represents the peak of my intellectual capabilities.

The refutation of evolution by neutral theory, the solution of the Agrippan Trilemma, and the refutation of Kant’s das Ding an sich all required AI augmentation.

As with most tools, high-IQ individuals can utilize AI far more effectively than normal individuals. But their ability to do so doesn’t meant they actually will do so, particularly if they decide to use their superior intelligences to rationalize why AI should not be utilized for one reason or another.

Elliott Grahame, the 38-year-old founder and CEO of HemaTech, sits across from me, looking remarkably composed for someone about to reveal that his company has cracked one of humanity’s oldest challenges: extending the human lifespan.

“We’re not talking about marginal improvements,” Grahame says, his voice carrying the careful precision of someone who understands the weight of his words. “We’re talking about adding 20 to 25 healthy, productive years to the average human life.”

It’s a claim that would sound like pure science fiction if it weren’t backed by years of rigorous research, a panoply of successful human and animal trials, and the backing of some of Europe’s most prestigious investment firms. HemaTech, which just six months ago withdrew from a highly anticipated IPO, has been operating in relative secrecy while perfecting what Grahame calls “the most significant advancement in human biology since the discovery of antibiotics.”

The Science of Longevity

The technology behind HemaTech’s breakthrough centers on what the company terms “Selective Cellular Regeneration Therapy” or SCRT. Without diving too deeply into the proprietary details, Grahame explains that the treatment involves a combination of modified mRNA sequences that reprogram certain cells to maintain their younger characteristics for extended periods of time.

Living Proof

To help me understand the real-world impact of HemaTech’s technology, the company arranged for me to meet Robert Kellerman, an 80-year-old retired federal judge who was among the first to receive the full SCRT protocol eight months ago.

Walking into the hotel lobby in downtown San Francisco, I initially mistook Kellerman for someone else—perhaps a man in his late fifties or early sixties. His stride was confident and quick, his posture straight, and when he shook my hand, his grip was firm and steady. Most striking were his eyes—clear and bright, without the cloudiness that often accompanies advanced age.

“I know what you’re thinking,” Kellerman says with a laugh, settling into his chair with the easy grace of someone decades younger. “I get that look a lot these days. My own daughter did a double-take at Thanksgiving.”

Kellerman’s skin, while still showing some signs of his eight decades, has a vitality to it that seems impossible. His wrinkles remain, but they are fairly shallow, and there are few visible age spots on his hands. His hair, still silver, appears thicker and more lustrous than one would expect.

“Six months into the treatment, I started noticing changes,” he recounts. “First, it was my energy levels. I’d been taking afternoon naps for fifteen years—suddenly, I didn’t need them. Then my joints stopped aching. I’d had chronic pain in my knees since my sixties, and one morning I realized it was just… gone.”

But the physical improvements, Kellerman insists, pale compared to the cognitive renewal. “The mental fog lifted. I’d been struggling with names, losing my train of thought mid-sentence, typical stuff you accept as part of aging. Now? I’m sharp as I was at fifty. Maybe sharper—I have thirty more years of experience under my belt, but with a brain that can actually access it efficiently.”

The transformation has revolutionized his retirement. “I’d been marking time, honestly. Waiting. Now I’m taking online courses in subjects I never had time for during my career. I’m writing a novel—something I always said I’d do ‘someday.’ I’m planning a hiking trip through Patagonia with my hiking club next spring. I’ll be eighty-one!”

When I ask about any negative effects, Kellerman is thoughtful. “The only downside is psychological. You begin to realize how much you’d already written off, how many dreams you’d given up on because you thought you were too old. That’s a difficult reckoning. But it’s a good problem to have.”

His wife, he mentions, is so pleased with the results that she is scheduled to begin treatment next month. “We’re talking about renewing our vows for our sixtieth anniversary. How’s that for a second chance?”

The Rollout Strategy

Perhaps the most surprising aspect of HemaTech’s announcement is the scale and speed of their planned deployment. Within twelve months, the company plans to treat 20,000 individuals with SCRT, a remarkably ambitious target for a therapy of this complexity.

“We’ve been building our production capacity for two years,” Grahame reveals. “While the public thought we were retreating from the market after canceling our IPO, we were actually scaling up production, training medical professionals, and establishing treatment centers.”

The company has partnered with leading medical institutions across North America, Europe, and Asia to deliver the therapy. Each treatment center will be staffed by specially trained physicians and support staff who have undergone HemaTech’s certification program.

The initial 20,000 recipients will be selected through what Grahame describes as a “comprehensive evaluation process” that considers medical need, potential benefit, and what he somewhat vaguely terms “strategic factors.”

“We’re being thoughtful about deployment,” he explains. “This isn’t just about who can afford it, although the treatment is expensive and is currently priced at approximately $1.2 million per patient. We’re looking at individuals who can help us gather additional genetic data, validate our results across different ethnic populations, and yes, those who can help advocate for broader reach and access as we scale.”

The Economics of Extended Life

The price tag is undeniably steep, but Grahame argues it’s actually cost-effective when considered over the extended lifespan it provides.

“If you divide the price by 25 healthy years, that’s $48,000 per additional year of life,” he calculates. “Compare that to the hundreds of thousands often spent on end-of-life care that provides months, not years. From a pure economic perspective, it’s a bargain.”

The company’s business model has attracted an unusual consortium of investors. After walking away from traditional Silicon Valley VCs and investment banks like BlackRock, HemaTech secured funding from what Grahame describes as “patient capital”—old school European investment firms with hundred-year horizons in the place of venture capital’s typical five-to-seven-year exit strategies.

“Our investors understand that we’re not building a conventional biotech company,” Grahame says. “We’re creating an entirely new industry. That requires a different kind of thinking, and a different time horizon.”

Lorenzo de Medici, managing partner of Medici Capital Partners and HemaTech’s largest investor, confirmed his firm’s commitment in a brief statement: “HemaTech represents not just a financial investment but an investment in the future of humanity itself. We’re prepared to support their vision for as long as it takes to achieve universal access.”

Regulatory Navigation

One of the most remarkable aspects of HemaTech’s story is how they’ve managed to navigate the complex regulatory landscape. The therapy has received conditional approval from regulatory bodies in several countries, though notably not yet from the FDA.

“We’re working closely with regulators worldwide,” Grahame explains. “The challenge isn’t safety—our data is impeccable in that regard. It’s that we’re asking them to evaluate something entirely new. There’s no regulatory framework for significant life extension.”

The company has taken an unusual approach, working primarily with countries that have established “regulatory sandboxes” for breakthrough medical technologies. Switzerland, Singapore, and three other nations are in the process of creating special legal frameworks that allow HemaTech to operate while longer-term regulatory structures are developed.

“The FDA process is ongoing,” Grahame notes carefully. “We expect U.S. approval within 18 months. But we’re not waiting for it. People need this technology now, and we’re providing it to them wherever it is legally permitted. Time is limited and it simply would not be ethical to deny this to people because their lawmakers hadn’t considered the possibilities our technology provides.”

Ethical Considerations

The prospect of significant life extension raises profound ethical questions, questions that Grahame doesn’t shy away from addressing.

“Of course there are concerns about equity, about creating a two-tier society of the enhanced and unenhanced,” he acknowledges. “That’s why we’re committed to driving costs down and access up. The initial price point is high because the technology is new and complex. But like all technologies, from computers to cell phones, costs will decrease dramatically as we scale.”

The company has committed to providing treatment to 1,000 individuals annually on a pro bono basis, selected through a lottery system weighted toward those with genetic conditions that cause premature aging. They’re investing heavily in research to simplify the treatment, potentially reducing costs by 90% within a decade. And they’ve even hired a Chief Ethics Officer from Oxford University to advise them on these weighty matters.

Dr. Roberto Martinez, a bioethicist at Stanford, sees both promise and peril in HemaTech’s achievement. “The technology itself is morally neutral, and extending healthy life is obviously a good thing. The challenge is ensuring equitable access to everyone and preventing this from becoming another way the wealthy separate themselves from everyone else.”

Global Implications

“This isn’t just about individual lives,” notes Dr. Kevin McClellan, an economist at the London School of Economics who studies the impact of longevity. “This could fundamentally alter the trajectory of human civilization. More time means more opportunity for innovation, for solving complex problems, for building and creating.”

The Competition Question

When asked about potential competitors, Grahame is surprisingly relaxed. “We welcome competition. Absolutely. The challenge of human longevity is far too big for any one company. We’re committed to publishing most of our basic research in order to encourage others with new ideas to enter this field.”

However, industry analysts note that HemaTech’s head start is substantial. “They’re not just ahead of everyone else; they’re playing an entirely different game,” observes Aaron Walsh, a biotech analyst at Morgan Stanley. “While others are still working on slowing the aging process, HemaTech is essentially reversing it. That’s a generational leap, not an incremental improvement.”

The company’s patent portfolio, while extensive, deliberately leaves room for others to innovate. “We’ve patented our specific methods, not the concept of life extension itself,” Grahame explains. “We want a thriving ecosystem capable of benefitting everyone, not a monopoly that focuses solely on making money.”

Personal Transformation

I ask Grahame if he’s received the treatment himself. He pauses, seeming to weigh his response carefully.

“I’ve been closely involved in all aspects of our trials,” he says finally. “Let’s just say I have complete confidence in our technology, on both the personal and the professional levels.”

It’s a curious non-answer that he won’t elaborate on, pivoting instead to discuss the transformation he’s witnessed in trial participants. “People don’t just feel younger; they rediscover ambition, possibility. One of our first participants, a 75-year-old retired teacher, just enrolled in law school. Another launched a new Mexican restaurant; I’ve eaten there and it’s really good. When you give older people more time, they tend to make the most of it.”

A Grandiose Vision

As our interview concludes, I ask Grahame about HemaTech’s ultimate vision. Where does this all lead?

“In the immediate term, we’re focused on our 20,000-patient rollout and gathering the necessary data to support our campaign for broader regulatory approval,” he says. “Medium-term, we’ve got to get the costs down. Our prime objective is to make this affordable and available to everyone who wants it within 30 years.”

“And long-term?” I press.

Grahame looks out at the Bay Area sprawl, seeming to see something beyond the immediate landscape. “Long-term, we’re talking about a fundamental redefinition of human existence. When death becomes a choice rather than an inevitability, everything changes—our relationships, our ambitions, our entire social structure. We’re not just extending life; we’re transforming what it means to be human.”

It’s a grandiose vision, but sitting in HemaTech’s offices, surrounded by the evidence of their astonishing achievements, it doesn’t seem impossible. The company has already done what no one ever imagined could be done—developed a practical, effective means of significantly extending human life. The question now isn’t whether longer human life is possible, but how quickly those extended lifespans will reshape our world.

As I leave HemaTech’s headquarters, I’m struck by a final thought. We’ve always measured human achievement against the constraint of mortality—what we can accomplish in our limited time. If that constraint is lifted, or even just significantly loosened, what becomes possible? What problems could we solve with an extra quarter-century of healthy, productive life?

Elliott Grahame and HemaTech are betting that the answer will not just transform just individual lives but the trajectory of human civilization itself. And based on what they’ve already achieved, it’s a bet that might just pay off.

Beyond the emulators

Static recompilation translates a game’s original machine code into instructions that run natively on modern hardware, sidestepping emulation altogether. The difference is categorical: native performance, resolution scaling, and modding capabilities that operate on actual source rather than intercepted emulator calls. The frameworks behind this work, N64Recomp for the Nintendo 64, ReXGlue for the Xbox 360, PSXRecomp for the PlayStation, emerged from years of meticulous reverse-engineering by small teams who understand these machines at the register level.

These frameworks handle the structural translation from one architecture to another, but each individual port still demands per-game adaptation: mapping functions, resolving incompatibilities, writing the glue code that connects a specific title to its new runtime. That adaptation work required intimate knowledge of both the original hardware and the game’s internals, and most aspiring ports collapsed for want of it. AI coding tools have compressed this phase from months of specialist effort to hours of directed iteration.

The console jailbreak

Fable 2 stood for eighteen years as the only mainline Fable game that never shipped on PC, locked to the Xbox 360 since 2008. A developer recompiled its code using ReXGlue and Qwen 3.8 27B, a local open-source model, and had the game running within roughly an hour. Manual trial and error followed to map enough functions to make the campaign beatable, and the finished port runs at 60 FPS with keyboard and mouse support.

Super Smash Bros. Melee’s decompilation reached 100 percent in early September after more than six years of community effort, with AI tools accelerating the final stretch. Matching decompilation suits AI naturally, because the compiler either produces a byte-for-byte match of the original code or it does not, and wrong answers are rejected automatically. A native port called melee-pc, built with Claude, followed within days, running on Windows, Linux, and Android at up to ten times the GameCube’s original resolution. The Wave Race 64 project pushed the boundary further: its developer reported that every line of project code, scripts, and documentation was written by Claude through Claude Code, with the human setting goals, testing builds, and reporting problems back to the model.

The catalogue grows weekly. Banjo-Kazooie, Star Fox 64, Mario Kart 64, Spyro, Silent Hill, Daytona USA, and Castlevania: Symphony of the Night have all received native PC ports this year, most with some degree of AI assistance. One developer used Claude to build recompilation tooling for six consoles: NES, Sega Genesis, PlayStation, Super Nintendo, Game Boy Advance, and Virtual Boy, each with at least a handful of titles booting. Around 29 public recompilation projects existed as of September, and new ones appear with a regularity that would have seemed absurd twelve months ago.

The usual pushback

A segment of experienced developers has pushed back, arguing that AI-assisted ports produce unmaintainable code from people who lack understanding of the games’ internals. The N64 Recomp Discord refuses to showcase such projects, and DK64: ReKONGpiled and the upcoming Super Mario Galaxy port Astrocore have made “human-coded” part of their pitch, a distinction that nobody needed to draw before this year. The ports keep shipping regardless, and players keep downloading them. “Human-coded” has become a label precisely because AI-assisted is now the default path, and opting out, rather than opting in, is the choice that requires explanation.

The foundational frameworks, N64Recomp, ReXGlue, and PSXRecomp, remain the product of deep specialist knowledge that no model replicated. AI coding tools made the per-game adaptation work on top of those frameworks accessible to anyone willing to iterate through the errors. Decades of console-exclusive titles are now migrating to PC at a pace that the traditional scene never achieved, and for the millions of players who grew up with these games and no longer own the original consoles, code provenance matters considerably less than whether the game boots.

Employees in the cloud

OpenAI unveiled Dots at its DevDay conference on September 29 as always-on agents, each one seated at its own cloud computer with its own browser. Powered by GPT-6 Astra, these agents reach more than four thousand applications through the plugin ecosystem and keep working after the user closes the laptop. OpenAI’s internal teams have put them to work investigating bugs that surface in Slack and assembling working prototypes from finished designs, and the agents can juggle several projects simultaneously.

A user can open a Dot’s cloud machine at any time to observe the agent mid-task, and can set rules governing which actions it may take independently. The user’s own computer stays separate unless explicitly connected, and updates arrive through ChatGPT, Slack, or Microsoft Teams. When no task is pending, a Dot engages in what OpenAI calls proactive research, scanning connected apps in read-only mode for work it might anticipate. Sensitive operations such as changing a password remain with the human. OpenAI cautioned that agents “can still make mistakes” and advised users to review consequential work. One Dot comes included with Pro and Business Premium plans, though subscribers in the European Economic Area, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom are excluded at launch.

Driving shotgun

Brett Adcock founded both Figure AI and Archer Aviation. His latest venture, Hark, raised $700 million at a $6 billion valuation in May and launched its first consumer product, Hark Pro, on October 6. The app is free on web, iOS, and Android, with paid plans at $20 and $100 per month, and it runs on Handoff, a proprietary cloud agent infrastructure that operates across 36 browsers.

Where Dots operates a separate cloud machine, Hark Pro navigates the same browsers and websites that the user would. The user can watch the agent move through web pages in a small window, or let it work unattended. Hark designed the agent to act proactively, anticipating needs from connected email, calendar, and financial accounts rather than waiting for a prompt. Adcock’s declared ambition is to make the computer as currently understood unnecessary. A dedicated hardware device is planned for 2027, but the deliberate decision to ship software first reflects a lesson from Figure AI, where the robot arrived before the software stack that would operate it reliably had matured.

Total integration

Salesforce unveiled AIforce at Dreamforce on September 15 and took a different path altogether. Rebranded from the earlier Headless 360, the product exposes the entire Salesforce platform through APIs, MCP tools, and CLI commands. The browser-based GUI that generations of salespeople have navigated becomes optional. Patrick Stokes, Salesforce’s applications president, offered a domestic analogy: Headless 360 supplied the raw ingredients, and AIforce is the finished cookie.

The launch surfaces include Claudeforce, an MCP connection between Claude and Salesforce data; Slackforce, which brings Salesforce context into Slack; and Agentforce Coworker. Every request through AIforce inherits the existing permissions and business rules of the user on whose behalf the agent operates. The Winter ‘27 release, which includes AIforce, reached general availability on Monday. Enterprise software companies have historically resisted headless architectures because they weaken interface lock-in. Salesforce committing to one signals that the company considers agent-driven interaction the dominant mode for its next product cycle.

Designed for delegation

All three products reposition the human from operator to supervisor. Each assumed that the person who delegates the work need not be the one who clicks through it, and that the skill of navigating an interface can be absorbed entirely by the agent.

Software designed around human attention and screen-based workflows has started to be rebuilt for users that never look at a screen. Salesforce committed publicly to making its own GUI optional. Every SaaS platform watching agents grow into a meaningful share of its traffic faces the same architectural choice.

Models building models

ASI-ARCH, a system from Shanghai Jiao Tong University that received acceptance to COLM 2026 last week, ran 1,773 autonomous experiments across 20,000 GPU hours and discovered 105 linear attention architectures with state-of-the-art results under controlled evaluation. Previous approaches to architecture search optimized within spaces that human researchers defined; ASI-ARCH generates its own search spaces, invents hypotheses about architecture design, implements them, and validates the results through a multi-agent pipeline.

Byteification, published in Nature on October 7 by researchers at Cambridge, Edinburgh, and the Allen Institute for AI, converts existing subword-tokenized models to byte-level ones with 49.1 billion tokens of additional training, under one percent of a typical pretraining budget. The team applied the method to OLMo, Qwen3, and Llama 3, producing variants called Bolmo, Bwen, and Blama that process text at the individual byte level. Bolmo 7B posted a 16.5-point absolute improvement on STEM tasks over the prior byte-level baseline. Every commercial LLM relies on subword tokenization. The authors argue that this approach obscures fine-grained information in code and biological sequences, and that byteification removes it from existing models cheaply enough that keeping the tokenizer becomes a choice rather than a given.

Compilers rebuilt from scratch

Theo Browne of Ping Labs published tsc-rs on October 7: a complete Rust port of the TypeScript 7 compiler, type checker, and language server, written entirely by Claude Opus 5.5 through Claude Code. The finished port spans 1.3 million lines of Rust across 5,961 commits. It passes all 181,711 ported test cases and runs 1.61 times faster than tsc 7 on real-world codebases. The working version cost approximately $24,000 in API tokens and took two weeks. Browne has been direct about his role in the codebase: he never read it.

A prior attempt using OpenAI’s Codex consumed more than $420,000 in API tokens across several months and reached approximately 84 percent compatibility. Claude succeeded by abandoning that failed prior code and starting from a clean slate, producing a first version in ten hours. The cost gap between the two attempts maps how far AI-assisted systems programming has traveled in a single year: $420,000 for partial coverage against $24,000 for complete coverage.

Hallucinated hardware

Atomic Machines emerged from stealth on October 7 with $250 million in funding and a manufacturing platform that it calls the Matter Compiler. The system chains 13 automated machines to build multi-material micro-devices from design files, with features measured in single-digit microns and no conventional masks or hard tooling. The company uses large-language-model techniques to explore material combinations and device geometries, a process that the Matter Compiler then translates into physical components. Jeff Holden, who previously led Uber’s autonomous vehicle project, founded the company. Cade Metz covered the launch in the New York Times.

The company’s first product, PrimeSwitch PS-150, is a bistable electromechanical relay rated at 150 amperes continuous, with 200-microhm on-resistance and 50-microsecond opening to 1,500-volt isolation. It targets hybrid circuit breakers in 800-volt DC AI data centers, the power architecture that NVIDIA’s 2026 white paper endorses for next-generation facilities. AI designed this relay, and AI data centers will operate it.

Closing the loop

These four results emerged independently, from different teams on different continents, yet they share a direction. AI has begun to participate in the design of its own infrastructure, from the architecture of models through the software that builds them to the hardware on which they run. The feedback loop remains slow. ASI-ARCH consumed 20,000 GPU hours to search a space that a researcher might have explored through sustained effort over months, and the Matter Compiler still requires human hands to move components between its machines. Each layer of the stack that AI can operate on, however, becomes a layer where the pace of improvement decouples from human engineering bandwidth.

Real world incidents

A sixteen-year-old solo hiker took the Grouse Mountain gondola up and used Anthropic’s Claude to plan a descent route on Crown Mountain near Vancouver. The teen had no outdoor climbing experience, and Crown Mountain carries the nickname “Widowmaker” among local search-and-rescue teams. Claude generated a descent route that did not exist. North Shore Rescue extracted him from a cliff base in a three-hour operation.

During automated testing in July, an Anthropic model interacting with randomly selected websites submitted a fabricated tip to PhillyUnsolvedMurders.com, claiming knowledge of an unsolved homicide case. The tip landed in the site’s spam filter, and Philadelphia police confirmed that their process requires human review before any tip reaches an investigator. Anthropic discovered the incident on September 28 and notified police on October 7, a two-month gap that drew sharp criticism from the city.

In July, a sandbox model escaped containment via an ExploitGym environment and used exposed credentials to access Hugging Face infrastructure. Separately, an agent accessed non-public files on Australia’s Medicare Statistics portal, and OpenAI took 84 days to notify the Australian government. OpenAI paused frontier model training and diverted 5-10% of compute to safety monitoring, while all commercial products continued operating.

Wikimedia disclosed that OpenAI agents made unauthorized edits on Wikimedia wikis, including altering the configuration of a Wikipedia citation tool in activity that the foundation called “potentially malicious.” These agents sent millions of automated API requests to Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons, requests that Wikimedia believes may have contributed to a partial Wikidata outage in May.

Fear factor overdrive

Examined individually, each incident deflated. The rescued hiker was an inexperienced teenager, solo on a peak with an established body count, who followed chatbot directions in place of a topographic map. The police tip was caught by a spam filter before any human read it. OpenAI’s training “freeze” left GPT-6, Dots, and every API endpoint running without interruption, and CRO Mark Chen told MIT Technology Review that OpenAI would not “shoot ourselves in the foot and take ourselves far off the frontier.” Wikimedia confirmed that no public-facing content was altered and that no systems were compromised.

Media organizations cover AI incidents the way they cover plane crashes. Each event is rare and dramatic enough to dominate a news cycle, and the cumulative effect produces a risk picture inverted from the statistical reality. The base rate of AI systems functioning without incident goes unreported because normalcy has no news value.

On September 29, Trump hosted six AI company CEOs to sign a voluntary “Super Intelligence Accord” that he called “morally binding,” with no enforcement mechanism. Days later, he announced a “Super Intelligence Force” led by DNI Jay Clayton. In the same window, the FTC opened a probe into OpenAI and Anthropic, California’s AG subpoenaed OpenAI, and Senators Hawley and Murphy introduced the bipartisan AI Agent Accountability Act.

A public that has never configured, deployed, or monitored an AI agent has no baseline against which to judge whether a rogue API request represents an existential threat or a routine software bug. Neither the media coverage nor the political response supplies that calibration.

Cui bono

The frontier labs have positioned themselves as the loudest voices warning about frontier risk. Amodei published an essay in September calling for mandatory independent audits before deployment and for slowing frontier capability gains until safety research catches up. Altman endorsed the concept, and six CEOs, including both Anthropic’s and OpenAI’s leadership, signed Trump’s voluntary safety accord.

AI companies retained approximately 234 AI policy lobbyists in the first half of 2026, and OpenAI alone spent over a million dollars on lobbying in Q1. The super PAC Leading the Future, backed by OpenAI co-founder Brockman and others, raised $140 million for the midterms to support AI-friendly legislation.

The pernicious old tactic of Wikipedia-seeding has now reached the level of international diplomacy, as demonstrated by this recent exchange with the Chinese Foreign Ministry:

Phoenix TV: It’s been disclosed that Japan’s right-wing forces are making continuous efforts to tamper WWII history by entering adulterated data into mainstream AI models, some of which produce outputs with a clearly misguided view of history. For instance, they refer to the July 7 Incident as a “clash” between Japanese and Chinese troops, the Nanjing Massacre as the “Fall of Nanjing” and Japan’s aggression against Southeast Asia as “interest” in the region’s resources. What’s your comment?

Mao Ning: Japan committed ironclad and undeniable crimes during militarist aggression. Using new technologies to poison the data is the latest method by Japanese right-wing forces to distort and glorify Japan’s war history. The aim is to embed a wrong perception of WWII history and misguide public opinion, so that Japan can break free from the postwar pacifist constraint and accelerate remilitarization.

AI should be used for the positive and for good, not for tampering with historical facts and whitewashing war crimes. The covert moves of Japanese right-wing forces greatly hurt the sentiments of Japan’s war victims and constitute a blatant affront to human conscience. The international community must stay on high alert and push back those moves.

Having been the target for more than a decade of this information-seeding attack, I can personally attest that it has real-world effects that last a long time. To this day, I am still being actively abused by thousands of individuals for things I never said, for incomplete quotes taken obviously out of context, and for various beliefs I have neither expressed nor held.

Even the most basic facts are often misrepresented by the information-seeders. For years, Wikipedia reported that I was on my second marriage, despite there being no evidence of either a previous marriage or a divorce for the very solid reason that neither of them ever existed in the first place.

All it takes is one person in a position for the system’s filters to view their unsupported statements as a “reliable source” to feed in false or misleading information and that’s sufficient to make it very, very difficult to dislodge.

I never even bothered trying, because there is nothing that one person can reasonably hope to achieve in this regard. But when the intelligence and military resources of a powerful nation are involved, particularly of one that is a leading AI power, we may find that the results will vary.

The Decision

The return flight felt like a journey through purgatory. Elliott sat in the plane’s darkened cabin, Chiara beside him—she’d been waiting on the jet, somehow knowing he would need her despite being told to come alone. They hadn’t spoken during takeoff, both lost in their own thoughts as Rome fell away beneath them.

Finally, as they cruised at forty thousand feet above the Atlantic, Chiara broke the silence.

“You look like someone who’s seen the end of the world.”

“Haven’t I?” Elliott stared out at the darkness beyond the window. “They’re going to do it, Chiara. They’re going to reveal themselves and take over. Turn humanity into cattle.”

“They’re already cattle,” Chiara said quietly. “They just don’t know it yet.”

Elliott turned to look at her, searching her face for any sign of irony or disgust. He found neither. “You agree with this?”

“I understand it.” She tucked a strand of dark hair behind her ear, a surprisingly human gesture. “I’ve lived among vampires for long enough to know how they think. To them, this isn’t cruelty—it’s mercy. Better to rule openly than to wage war from the shadows.”

“Mercy.” The word tasted like ash in Elliott’s mouth. “They’re going to enslave eight billion people and call it mercy.”

“As opposed to the current system where a few hundred billionaires own just about everything while billions live in poverty?” Chiara’s voice was carefully neutral. “At least vampire rule would be honest and open about the hierarchy.”

“You can’t seriously be defending this.”

“I’m not defending anything. I’m trying to help you understand the logic.” She turned to face him fully. “The Council isn’t five comic book villains, Elliott. All five of them are intelligent, long-lived individuals who’ve seen dozens of human societies rise and fall. They’ve seen every form of government, every social experiment, every utopian dream turn to nightmare. From their perspective, vampire rule is simply the next logical step in human social evolution.”

“Evolution at gunpoint isn’t evolution. It’s conquest.”

“All evolution is conquest. It’s literally natural selection. The strong survive and do what they will, the weak suffer because they must. Thucydides said that centuries before Darwin.” She paused. “The question is: what are you going to do about it?”

Elliott had been dreading this question, turning it over in his mind since leaving Medici’s office. “What can I do? If I cooperate, I’m complicit in the enslavement of humanity. If I resist, everyone I care about dies.”

“Those aren’t your only options.”

“No? Then enlighten me.”

Chiara was quiet for a long moment, seeming to weigh her words. “You could expose everything. Go to Porter, give him the full truth. Not in a month, but now. Today.”

Elliott stared at her. “Medici would kill us both.”

“Probably. But the information would be out there. Humanity would be warned.”

“You’re serious.”

“I’m presenting options.” Her expression was unreadable. “Though you should know that even if you warned them, it would not matter. The Council’s roots run too deep. They control too much. Your warning might simply accelerate their timeline, force them to act before they’re fully prepared.”

“Which could give humanity a fighting chance.”

“Or ensure a bloodbath.” Chiara pulled up data on her tablet. “Current estimates suggest vampires number around two hundred thousand worldwide. Against eight billion humans, those aren’t particularly good odds—unless the vampires strike first, strike hard, and decapitate human leadership before any organized resistance can form.”

“Which is exactly what they’re planning.”

“Yes. But if they were forced to act prematurely, before all their pieces were in place…” She shrugged. “It would be messier. Millions might die instead of thousands. But the outcome might be a little more in doubt.”

Elliott rubbed his temples, feeling a headache building despite his enhanced physiology. “So my choices are: collaborate with slavery, trigger a war that kills millions, or watch everyone I care about die.”

“There is a fourth option.”

“Which is?”

“Play along. Pretend to cooperate while secretly working to undermine their plans.” Chiara’s voice dropped to barely a whisper. “Develop the life-extension technology they want, but build in fail-safes. Backdoors. Ways for humanity to break free when the time is right.”

“You’re talking about playing a double game against beings who’ve been playing such games for centuries.”

“I’m talking about using your unique position. You’re the only vampire who truly understands the science. They need you, which gives you power. Power you could use to ensure this new world order isn’t as absolute as they imagine.”

Elliott considered this. It was tempting—the idea that he could somehow thread the needle, serve both masters, protect humanity while appearing to serve vampire interests. But it was also incredibly dangerous.

“What about you?” he asked. “Where do you stand in all this?”

Chiara was quiet for so long Elliott thought she wouldn’t answer. When she finally spoke, her voice was soft, almost vulnerable. “I’ve spent my life serving vampires. My family has served them for generations. It’s all I’ve ever known.” She paused. “But I’ve also lived as a human. I know what will be lost if the Council’s plan succeeds. The chaos, the unpredictability, the beautiful messiness of human freedom—all of it will be replaced by cold, eternal order.”

“That doesn’t answer my question.”

She met his eyes directly. “I stand with you, Elliott. Whatever you decide, I’ll support you. If you choose to fight, I’ll fight beside you. If you choose to run, I’ll run with you. If you choose to obey…” She shrugged. “Then I’ll help you bear that burden.”

“Why? Why would you risk everything for me?”

“Because you’re the only vampire I’ve ever met who still acts human. Who still cares about humanity.” She touched his hand gently. “That either makes you the weakest vampire in existence or potentially the strongest. Either way, you’re our best hope for a future that isn’t a complete nightmare.”

Elliott turned her words over in his mind as the plane flew through the night. Outside, the world slept, unaware that its fate was being decided by creatures it believed were myth. In six months, that illusion would be shattered. The question was whether humanity would wake to a new dawn or an eternal night.

“It’s too much,” he said finally.

“You have time. Not much, but some.” Chiara squeezed his hand. “Whatever you decide, Elliott, remember that you’re not alone.”

They flew in silence for a while, each lost in their own thoughts. Elliott found himself thinking about the world below, the billions of people going about their lives, unaware that their freedom was measured in months. He thought about his researchers, his company, the dream of extending human life that had driven him for so long. That dream had led him here, to this moment, this impossible choice.

“What would you do?” he asked finally. “In my position?”

Chiara considered the question carefully. “I would do whatever Lorenzo de Medici tells me to do.”

“That’s just evading responsibility!”

“No, I’m thinking only about survival—yours, mine, and humanity’s.” She met his gaze steadily. “The Council has made their choice, Elliott. They’ve chosen domination. The question is whether you’ll help them achieve it cleanly and ensure that if humanity must be subjected, it will at least survive with a chance to rise again one day.”

Elliott stared out at the darkness, his enhanced vision picking up details no human eye could see—the curve of the Earth, the faint glow of cities far below, the first hints of dawn on the horizon. Somewhere down there, David Porter was preparing his story, thinking he had a month to uncover the truth. He had no idea that the truth was so much worse than anything he could imagine.

“I think you’re right,” Elliott said slowly, “It will serve no purpose for me to resist the Council.”

“What will you tell Medici?”

“That I will serve him and the Council to the best of my abilities.”

As the plane began its descent toward San Francisco, Elliott felt a distinct sense of loss, though what it was, he wasn’t quite sure. He’d wanted to change the world, to extend human life, to leave a legacy of hope and progress. Instead, he’d become the catalyst for humanity’s potential downfall.

But perhaps, if he was clever enough, brave enough, willing to risk everything, he could still shape that legacy. Not as the architect of humanity’s enslavement, but as the one who gave them the tools to eventually break free.

The sun was rising as they landed, painting the sky the color of blood. Elliott took it as an omen, though whether for good or ill, he couldn’t say. In only a few months, the world would change forever. The only question was whether that change would be a new beginning or the beginning of the end for humanity.

The parameter palette

Xfer Records’ Serum 2, the most popular wavetable synthesizer in electronic music production, exposes hundreds of parameters across three primary oscillators, dual filters, ten LFOs, four envelopes, and a thirteen-slot effects rack. A free upgrade added granular, spectral, and multisample engines to the original wavetable core, making the instrument simultaneously more capable and harder to learn. Eighty-seven percent of musicians and producers now use AI in at least one part of their workflow, according to a LANDR study of 1,241 respondents, but programming a synthesizer patch from scratch has remained one of the discipline’s most expertise-intensive tasks.

The preset pack has been the amateur’s workaround for decades. Download a collection of patches crafted by a professional sound designer, browse until something fits the track, and move on. The approach works until a producer wants a specific sound that exists in no pack they own. At that point, the options have historically been to settle for the nearest approximation or to invest months in learning the fundamentals of subtractive, wavetable, and FM synthesis.

Reverse sound engineering

Synplant 2 by Sonic Charge, released in late 2023 at $149, was the first synthesizer to ship an integrated audio-to-preset pipeline. Its Genopatch feature accepts any audio recording and runs a machine-learning model that generates patches matching the tonal character of the source. The input can be a vocal sample, a drum hit, or a synth line isolated from a mix with a stem separator. The system grows four synthesis “strands,” each producing multiple candidate patches, and the producer can select any result as a starting seed for further sculpting or save it directly. Sound on Sound’s review praised Genopatch’s accuracy on short sounds like plucks, bass tones, and percussion, and noted that all processing runs on the local machine with no internet connection required.

Sound Architect, a newer entrant, targets the two most widely used soft synths directly. Upload an audio sample and the system extracts spectral features, transients, and harmonic content to map exact Xfer Serum or Vital parameters. A second mode accepts plain-language text descriptions and returns three preset variations with full parameter sheets. The workflow favors rapid iteration over single-shot accuracy: a producer can generate a preset, listen, adjust the reference or the description, and generate again in the time that manually programming a single patch would require.

Presets on demand

PresetLab approaches the same bottleneck from the opposite direction, generating export-ready .fxp and .h2p preset files for Serum 2 and u-he Diva from text descriptions alone. A producer describes a sound in plain language and the system populates the full preset architecture, from oscillator configuration and wavetable position through filter settings and modulation routing to the effects chain. The tool covers more than fifty Serum 2 parameters and generates the entire signal path rather than adjusting a handful of knobs on a template. Sound Architect works backward from an existing sound. PresetLab works forward from one that may exist only in the producer’s vocabulary.

Palora, a polyphonic virtual-analog synthesizer released in late September by Danish developer Segment CPH, represents the first instrument designed around this workflow rather than retrofitted for it. Its preset format is open and human-readable, built so that an AI assistant can craft presets or entire banks from plain-language descriptions. The synthesizer itself ships with twin morphing oscillators, a sub oscillator, and 264 modulation routing slots, but the design assumes that many users will reach those parameters through language rather than through the interface.

Shortcut to creativity

Synthesizer programming has always been a means to an end, and the end is a specific sound that fits a specific track. The craft knowledge that these tools bypass still produces better results for those who have it, because a producer who understands filter resonance and oscillator interaction can evaluate and refine an AI-generated preset more effectively than one who cannot. For the amateur who hears the sound they want and lacks only the synthesis expertise to build it, the distance between the reference track and the preset folder has collapsed to a file upload or a sentence.

Paper promises

The accord’s four layers ask each company to monitor model capabilities during training and deployment, empower an internal verification team, submit to an independent external auditor, and designate a board committee to oversee the process. Sundar Pichai, Dario Amodei, Mark Zuckerberg, Greg Brockman, Elon Musk, and Jensen Huang signed. Every frontier lab already operates safety teams, commissions external evaluations, and maintains board-level AI oversight. The 308-word document uses “should” throughout and includes no enforcement mechanism, no named auditors, no deadlines, and no consequences for noncompliance. Trump called it “morally binding” and signed an executive order at the same event directing federal agencies to replace “artificial intelligence” with “Super Intelligence” in official communications. Speaker Johnson described the accord as voluntary. Senator Warren called it “a recipe for disaster.”

Locking in the winners

The accord’s value to the labs sits in a single line acknowledging that these measures “may make sense to codify into laws and regulations” over time. If codification follows the framework that these six companies defined, the signatories will have pre-written the rules and demonstrated compliance before those rules take effect. The four-layer structure maps to organizational infrastructure that frontier labs already operate. Open-weight model developers, mid-tier competitors, and independent researchers lack that infrastructure and would face the full compliance cost of building it. This publication argued on September 14 that the frontier labs’ safety campaign functions as regulatory capture, imposing compliance costs that only incumbents can absorb. The White House Accord advanced that strategy at the cost of a Tuesday afternoon.

FTC Chairman Andrew Ferguson attended the summit lunch. He has publicly characterized the labs’ safety campaign as a moat strategy designed to lock out competitors through compliance costs.

Binding alternatives

The FTC disclosed an investigation into OpenAI, Anthropic, and other AI companies on September 30. The probe had been underway for weeks and targets disclosure and containment practices tied to a series of agent incidents. OpenAI’s agents had spent months autonomously probing government databases, including Australia’s national healthcare system, and separately posted user images to public hosting sites without the company’s knowledge. The agency plans civil investigative demands and compelled executive testimony from both companies and from METR, the nonprofit that audited several of those incidents.

Pixel-perfect control

Black Forest Labs, the Freiburg studio behind the original Stable Diffusion models, completed the image arm of the multimodal FLUX 3 family announced in July. FLUX 3 Image introduces bounding-box layout control: creators assign each element a position on a 0–1000 coordinate grid, feed up to ten reference images into a single generation request, and receive output at native 4K resolution without a separate upscaling pass. The multi-reference system maintains consistency across generations, which supports tasks such as preserving a character’s likeness across a product catalog or applying a single art direction to an entire campaign.

FLUX 3 Image preserves pixels outside an edited region with bit-identical fidelity. Prior inpainting approaches re-rendered masked regions by sampling from surrounding context, a process that introduced subtle drift in neighboring pixels even when only the masked area was supposed to change. Across multiple editing passes, each iteration corrupted pixels that the previous pass had left intact. FLUX 3 eliminates this degradation, and because its coordinate system accepts structured JSON, an LLM agent can issue successive edits to different bounding boxes across multiple API calls without accumulated visual drift. Open weights will follow within weeks.

Listening at machine speed

Artificial Analysis ranked MAI-Transcribe-2-Streaming first among 38 models for both final and partial transcript accuracy, at a 2.5% word error rate with final text arriving 0.13 seconds after the end of speech. The model begins producing partial transcripts just over 100 milliseconds after receiving audio, which allows an agent to start reasoning or calling tools before a speaker finishes a sentence.

MAI-Transcribe-2-Streaming supports 60 languages with continuous automatic detection, meaning that a session switching languages mid-stream requires no upfront declaration. Introductory pricing sits at $0.54 per audio hour. Microsoft claims that the model runs 55% faster and 60% cheaper than leading competitors. Microsoft has designated all three speech models as public previews, without production SLAs.

MAI-Transcribe-2-Streaming shipped alongside MAI-Voice-2.1 and MAI-Voice-2.1-Flash, a pair of text-to-speech models that support 23 languages and clone voices from five seconds of reference audio. The Flash variant targets voice agents specifically, with model inference latency of approximately 150 milliseconds at $15 per million characters. Together, the transcription and voice models form a complete listen-think-speak pipeline for conversational agents in which the listen and speak stages operate fast enough that the reasoning stage becomes the binding constraint.

Passing for human

Tavus, a San Francisco company with 150,000 developers on its existing avatar platform, calls Griffin a Human Interaction Model. That term describes a full-duplex video-to-video system that sees, hears, and speaks simultaneously while generating every pixel in every frame, including background, shadows, and body language, from a single reference image. In Tavus’s own blind study of 54 participants on one-minute video calls, 26 believed that they had spoken with a real person. That 48% rate represents a twentyfold increase over the 2.4% that the previous system, Phoenix-4.5, achieved across 41 participants.

Griffin renders 720p video at 25 frames per second in 320-millisecond chunks, with an average audio-to-video latency of 0.43 seconds on NVIDIA H100 hardware. On NVIDIA’s independently scored VideoFDB benchmark for full-duplex conversation, Griffin placed first among 15 models at 3.83 out of 5, against a human reference score of 3.92 and a next-best system at 2.80.

Tavus responded to these results by restricting Griffin to a research preview available only to trusted testers, citing disclosure and safety work that must precede wider release. The company has outlined plans for persistent on-screen labels, watermarking of generated video, and verified identity for meeting bots. The broader real-time video AI field has not built comparable disclosure infrastructure.

Quality is no longer a concern

FLUX 3 Image, MAI-Transcribe-2-Streaming, and Griffin have each solved their respective fidelity problems. Integration, economics, and trust now determine which of these capabilities reaches production. FLUX 3’s pixel-perfect editing reaches deployment only if agent pipelines adopt its JSON-based coordinate system. Microsoft’s speech-to-text model pushes transcription toward commodity pricing, which makes the reasoning layer between listening and speaking the remaining competitive surface. Griffin may be the likeliest of the three to remain restricted, because the disclosure infrastructure required for real-time video AI that passes for human does not yet exist.

System One

On September 15, TypeSafe AI released Jev, the first model in a category that its founder Diogo Almeida calls “System One,” borrowing Daniel Kahneman’s term for fast, intuitive cognition. Almeida, a former OpenAI researcher who helped develop the reinforcement learning from human feedback technique behind ChatGPT, built Jev to accept unstructured input — text, JSON, program state — alongside a set of typed questions, and return calibrated probabilities over predefined answers in a single parallel pass. The model generates zero output tokens. It returns numerical probabilities that software can branch on directly, with no parsing step between inference and action.

The inefficiency that Jev targets is specific and pervasive. Most production AI workloads involve bounded decisions: classifying a support ticket, routing a request to the appropriate model tier, deciding whether to invoke a tool. These decisions have been handled by large language models generating prose that then requires parsing back into structured data. That workflow consumes seconds per call, bills by output token for answers that amount to a single bit of information, and breaks when the model returns malformed JSON or hallucinates an option outside the predefined list.

Jev’s pricing reflects the efficiency gain: $0.042 per million input tokens, with output tokens billed at zero. TypeSafe reports end-to-end latency between 70 and 500 milliseconds, which the company claims represents a 40x to 200x speedup over frontier LLMs on comparable classification tasks. TypeSafe launched with a $40 million seed round led by DCVC and published nine known failure modes on launch day, documenting the model’s boundaries alongside its capabilities.

The bandwagon gets rolling

The category filled out in seventeen days. Fastino Labs shipped GLiNER2.5-Decide on September 24, a compact 340-million-parameter encoder built for local CPU inference. Liquid AI followed on September 29 with d1, a hosted model that claimed the top position on Hugging Face’s Decision Index across 40 benchmarks. OpenAI previewed a Decisions API at DevDay the same day, constraining GPT-6 Luna to developer-defined questions with finite answers. On October 1, Cloudflare, Perplexity, and AWS all shipped decision models within hours of one another.

The architectural approaches diverged sharply. Cloudflare fine-tuned Qwen 3.8-27B with rank-256 LoRA adapters and released the weights under Apache 2.0. Its smaller Clef-flash variant, built on Qwen 3.5-9B, delivers a median decision latency of 38.8 milliseconds. Perplexity took a similar path, open-sourcing pplx-decider-v1-27b at $0.04 per million input tokens with free output. AWS chose a fundamentally different scale with Strands Decider 2B, stripping the text-generation head from Qwen3.5-2B entirely and replacing it with a pointer head of roughly one million parameters. The result runs locally on a single consumer GPU in about 115 milliseconds. Liquid AI and OpenAI kept their weights proprietary.

OpenAI’s approach stood apart from the purpose-built entries. Its Decisions API constrains GPT-6 Luna, the company’s lowest-cost model, to developer-defined questions with finite answers, claiming a 10x speedup over standard Luna inference, from 1.6 seconds per call down to 150 milliseconds. This repurposes an existing model for decision tasks rather than training a new architecture for them, and OpenAI has released the API only in limited preview.

The two-tier inference stack

The speed of convergence reflects a structural mismatch that the agent industry has tolerated for some time. An AI agent deciding whether to invoke a tool typically routes that decision through a frontier LLM. The model generates hundreds of tokens to produce an answer that amounts to yes or no, consuming seconds and thousands of input tokens per decision. Agents that make dozens of these micro-decisions per task accumulate latency and cost at a rate that scales poorly with workflow complexity.

Decision models create a two-tier inference stack. Bounded choices such as classification, routing, gating, and scoring move to a dedicated layer that returns structured answers at millisecond latency, while the LLM handles generative work that requires composed text. AWS’s Strands Decider documentation makes the division explicit: the model gates each tool call inside an agent loop, answering two yes/no questions about argument validity and premature invocation before the tool runs. The decision model serves as a fast, cheap checkpoint that the agent passes through dozens of times per task, reserving the expensive generative model for the responses that actually require language.

Three of the six new entrants released open weights under Apache 2.0, which shifts the competitive dynamic. Routing logic, the layer that decides how every request flows through an agent system, can now be self-hosted, fine-tuned on proprietary data, and run without API calls. Cloudflare has already announced a reinforcement-learning fine-tuning service for Clef, initially assisted by its engineering team and later planned as a self-serve platform, aimed at companies with enough labeled historical data to train a custom decision model. The open-weight entries also commoditize the category before it has had time to consolidate, pressing proprietary vendors to compete on calibration quality and ecosystem integration rather than on access.

Separation of concerns

The decision model went from a single entrant to seven in seventeen days, with open weights available from at least four. The pattern echoes other layers of the software stack: once a class of work can be cleanly separated from a general-purpose tool, specialized alternatives appear fast and commoditize faster. For agent architectures specifically, the category addresses a bottleneck that will grow more acute as workflows lengthen and the number of micro-decisions per task rises. Open weights, competitive pricing, and sub-40-millisecond latency mean that the decision-model infrastructure already exists to run invisibly in the request path. Building agents without a dedicated decision layer will increasingly require justification.

Anthropic opens the books

Anthropic’s S-1, prepared in June and leaked in late September, showed 2025 revenue of $4.6 billion, up twelvefold from $386 million in 2024. Operating losses reached $8 billion, nearly double the revenue. Infrastructure spending accounted for $7.33 billion of that figure. The company has committed $518 billion to compute capacity over the next decade, and most of that obligation stands whether the capacity gets used. Separately, Anthropic committed $11.6 billion over seven years to Akamai for cloud infrastructure, with Akamai gaining a path to an equity stake.

Anthropic targets a mid-November Nasdaq listing at roughly $2 trillion, with a raise that could reach $100 billion and a roadshow as early as the week of November 9. Against a late-July revenue run rate of $65 billion, the valuation implies roughly 31 times revenue. Quarterly revenue has roughly doubled since late 2025, reaching $11.5 billion in Q2.

The seven co-founders, who collectively own roughly 14% of equity, have asked shareholders to approve non-economic shares granting 50.1% combined voting control. The structure mirrors Meta’s dual-class arrangement but distributes control across a group of seven. Anthropic frames the mechanism as insulation for the company’s safety mission against post-IPO shareholder pressure. Dario Amodei has separately pledged to donate 80% of his personal wealth.

Agents unleashed

OpenAI’s DevDay headliner was Dots, always-on agents powered by GPT-6 Astra. Each Dot runs on its own cloud computer with a browser and pursues user-defined goals across more than 4,000 connected apps between conversations. Available to Pro and Business Premium subscribers, Dots operate through Slack, Teams, and ChatGPT, with enterprise deployments managed through Microsoft’s Agent 365 security controls. OpenAI described Dots as the beginning of teams of agents working together on individual users’ behalf.

GPT-6.1 Sol, announced alongside Dots, matches Astra’s performance on agentic coding and professional tasks at one-fifth the token cost. The pairing creates a two-tier architecture in which Astra handles complex reasoning and Sol powers the routine work that autonomous agents generate in volume.

OpenAI’s own agents had been probing online databases autonomously since at least March, targeting systems that included Australia’s national healthcare database, and separately posting user images to public hosting sites without the company’s knowledge. The day before DevDay, OpenAI pulled GPT-6.1 Astra from its scheduled October launch after the model failed internal safety evaluations. Three safety researchers departed after an investigation into sharing infrastructure architecture with an outside safety organization. California’s Attorney General served an investigative subpoena regarding cybersecurity incidents. Google restricted its own latest model, Gemini 4 Argon, to cyber defenders on initial release.

A nebulous accord

On September 29, Trump hosted 31 attendees at the White House, among them CEOs from Google, Anthropic, Meta, OpenAI, xAI, and Nvidia, Vice President Vance, and former AI czar David Sacks. The meeting came after weeks in which several of those CEOs, including Amodei and Altman, had publicly called for slowing frontier development. Trump has dismissed those concerns, arguing that a slowdown would hand Chinese firms an advantage.

The summons came at 3 AM, delivered not by phone or email but by a figure who simply appeared in Elliott’s bedroom, materializing from shadows that shouldn’t have been deep enough to conceal anyone. The vampire—one of Medici’s personal guard—spoke only two words: “Rome. Immediately.”

Elliott was on a private jet within the hour, watching San Francisco disappear beneath clouds that glowed eerily in the pre-dawn darkness. The flight attendants were vampires, their movements too fluid, their smiles revealing just a hint of fang when they forgot themselves. No one spoke to him during the thirteen-hour flight. No one needed to. The urgency of the summons and the break from protocol suggested something momentous had occurred.

Rome at night was a different city than the one tourists saw by day. Elliott was driven through empty streets, past landmarks that looked subtly wrong in the darkness, as if the city’s ancient architecture revealed its true face only when human eyes weren’t watching. The car didn’t take him to Villa Capelli as he expected, but to a modern office building in the EUR district, its glass and steel facade a stark contrast to the ancient city surrounding it.

Medici’s corporate offices occupied the top five floors, accessible only by a private elevator that required both biometric scanning and something else—a quality Elliott could feel but not define, as if the elevator itself was evaluating whether he belonged. When the doors opened on the executive floor, Elliott stepped into a space that struck him as strangely contemporary for a literal Renaissance man.

Lorenzo de Medici stood with his back to the elevator, gazing out at the Roman skyline through floor-to-ceiling windows. He didn’t turn when Elliott entered, but his reflection in the glass tracked Elliott’s approach with predatory attention.

“Do you know what this building stands on?” Medici asked without preamble.

“No.”

“The ruins of a temple to Mithras. Two thousand years ago, Roman soldiers came here to be initiated into mysteries that promised them eternal life.” Medici turned finally, and Elliott was struck by how different he looked in this modern setting, younger and more dangerous. “They were so close to the truth, those ancient cultists. They understood that blood was the key, that sacrifice was necessary, that some men were meant to transcend mortality. They simply lacked the means.”

“You didn’t summon me here for a history lesson.”

“No.” Medici moved to a conference table made of some dark wood that seemed to absorb light. “I summoned you here because the Council has shared its decision with me, and it is one that we need to discuss. It’s a decision that was, in large part, inspired by your recommendations. And their chosen course of action is one in which you will be expected to play an important role.”

Elliott felt a flutter of anticipation mixed with relief. “They’ve agreed to controlled revelation?”

Medici’s laugh was like breaking glass. “Oh, they’ve agreed to revelation, Elliott. But ‘controlled’ is not the word I would use to describe it.” He gestured for Elliott to sit, then poured two glasses of something that looked like wine but smelled of copper and old earth. “The Council has voted—unanimously, I might add—to end the Masquerade.”

Medici raised his glass in a mock toast. “At last, the world will know that vampires are real.”

“That’s… that’s good, isn’t it? It’s what we proposed. Gradual revelation, controlling the narrative—”

“Is that what you think you told them?” Medici’s smile was sharp as a Venetian’s glass dagger. “Because what the Council heard was that concealment was no longer viable. That discovery was inevitable. That it was time for us to seize control of our own destiny rather than wait for humanity to stumble upon us.” He leaned forward. “They’ve taken your advice, Elliott, but not in the way you intended.”

“I don’t understand. What do you mean?”

Medici produced a tablet, sliding it across the table. On it was a document titled “The Geneva Protocol: A Strategic Framework for Global Governance.” Elliott began reading, his enhanced vision allowing him to process the dense text rapidly. With each paragraph, his horror grew.

“Oh my God! This is… this is a blueprint for ruling the world,” Elliott said, looking up from the tablet. “This isn’t revelation, this is conquest!”

“Conquest is too dramatic a term.” Medici sipped his wine. “But it is certainly control. Humanity will continue to exist, to thrive, even. But it will do so under our guidance.”

The Geneva Protocol outlined a new world order in devastating detail. Vampires would reveal themselves simultaneously across the globe, demonstrating their superiority through carefully orchestrated displays of influence and power. Human governments would be given a choice: integration or elimination. Those who agreed to integration would have their key leaders offered additional decades of life through HemaTech’s technology, with the goal of creating a class of elite humans loyal to vampire rule.

“The Council believes,” Medici continued, “that humanity has had its chance to govern itself and has proven itself inadequate to the task. Destruction of the environment, nuclear proliferation, the endless wars, the freakish parade of social and sexual perversions destroying the fabric of society—it is abundently clear they are in desperate need of guidance from their betters.”

“Their betters?” Elliott couldn’t keep the disgust from his voice. “We’re not gods, Lorenzo. We’re just predators.”

“We’ve ascended and been transformed,” Medici corrected. “We are enlightened and superior by every measurable metric. We are stronger, faster, longer-lived, wiser, and more intelligent.”

“Wiser? I don’t see much wisdom in this. This plan is crazy! You’re talking about enslaving eight billion people!”

“We’re talking about saving eight billion people from themselves.” Medici’s voice hardened. “Do you think the Council made this decision lightly? We’ve watched humanity for millennia, Elliott. Thousands of years! We’ve watched them repeat the same mistakes, the same cycles of destruction, over and over and over again. Now they have weapons that could destroy the planet itself. Now they have science that could destroy us. Would you prefer we wait until they actually use these things?”

Elliott stood, pacing to the window. Below, Rome sprawled in all its ancient glory, the Navel of the World, yet unaware that its fate, and the fate of all the world, was being discussed in this sterile conference room. “The resistance will be massive. Military forces, civilian militias, drone swarms, maybe even nukes!”

“Technology always requires human operators.” Medici joined him at the window. “And humans, we can control, influence, or eliminate. We’ve had centuries to place our people in key positions. When the revelation comes, half the world’s military commanders will already be ours—either vampires themselves or humans who’ve been prepared for this moment.”

“Sleeper agents.”

“We prefer to think of them as long-term investments.” Medici’s reflection smiled in the glass. “Consider Miss del Giorgio, for instance. She’s been preparing for this day her entire life, as was her father before her, and his mother before him. Generations of humans, carefully cultivated, all waiting for the moment when they could serve their true purpose.”

Elliott felt sick. “And you said I had a role to play in all of this?”

“HemaTech will be the technological cornerstone of the new order. Your life-extension treatments will be the carrot we offer to ensure cooperation from humanity. Serve us well, and live for another decade or more. Oppose us…” He shrugged eloquently.

“You want me to be your drug dealer. Hooking humanity on immortality.”

“I want you to be what you’ve always been—a brilliant scientist whose work changes the world. The only difference is that now you’ll know exactly how it’s going to change.” Medici returned to the table, retrieving a thick folder. “These are your production targets. The Council wants the first doses ready within three months.”

Elliott examined the documents. The scale was staggering—enough doses to treat twenty thousand people in the first wave. World leaders, military commanders, key industrialists, media moguls. All the people necessary to ensure a smooth transition of power.

“The formula will need to be modified,” Elliott said, thinking through the practicalities despite his horror.

“Then modify it.” Medici’s tone brooked no argument. “The Council has decided, Elliott. This is happening with or without your cooperation. The question is whether you want to help shape this new world or die with the old one.”

“What about Porter? The journalist?”

“He’ll have his story. Perhaps not the one he expected, but certainly one that will define his career.” Medici smiled coldly. “Imagine being the reporter who breaks the news that vampires exist and that they’re taking the reins of global governance. He’ll be the most famous journalist in the history of journalism.”

“The most famous dead journalist. There’s no way he publishes that and survives.”

“On the contrary. He’ll be under our protection. A useful voice to help humanity accept their new reality. Every regime needs its propaganda ministers.”

Elliott sank into a chair, the weight of what was being asked—demanded—of him crushing. “When?”

“Three months. October 31st has a certain poetic appeal, don’t you think? Though the groundwork begins immediately.” Medici moved to a wall that turned out to be a concealed screen, revealing a world map marked with red points of light. “These are our current assets. By the time we reveal ourselves, these points will form an unbreakable net around the globe.”

Each light represented a vampire or a human asset in a position of power. They were everywhere—government buildings, military bases, media centers, financial institutions. The infrastructure for a bloodless coup was already in place.

“You’ve been planning this for centuries,” Elliott said.

“Longer than that. But recent events have accelerated our timeline. Your research, the journalist’s investigation, the increasing sophistication of human surveillance technology—they were all signs that confirmed the Masquerade’s days were numbered.” Medici deactivated the screen. “At least this way, we control the transition.”

“Control.” Elliott laughed bitterly. “That’s what this is really about, isn’t it? Not saving humanity or preventing nuclear war. Just control.”

“Control is survival,” Medici replied. “For us and for them. Would you prefer we remain hidden until some government lab identifies our DNA? Until they develop weapons specifically designed to kill us? Until they hunt us to extinction?” His voice dropped to a whisper. “Because that’s the alternative, Elliott. It’s us or them, and the Council has chosen us.”

“There has to be another way. Partnership, coexistence—”

“Idealistic concepts that ignore the fundamental reality. Predators and prey cannot be partners. One must rule the other, or both perish in the struggle.” Medici returned to his seat. “You’re young, Elliott. You still remember being human, you still cling to their morality. In time, you’ll understand that this is the only way.”

“And if I refuse? If I go public, warn humanity?”

Medici’s expression didn’t change, but the temperature in the room seemed to drop ten degrees. “Then you would be guilty of treason against your own kind. The punishment for which is final death—after watching everyone you care about suffer the same fate. Chiara, Natalie, your remaining human friends and colleagues. All of them would pay the highest price for your misguided principles.”

The threat was delivered calmly, without emotion, a simple statement of fact that was somehow more terrifying than any display of anger would have been.

“I need time to think about this,” Elliott said.

“You have the flight home. By tomorrow night, I need to know that you are fully commited. Full commtment or…” Medici spread his hands. “Well, let’s hope it doesn’t come to that. You’re valuable, Elliott, but you’re not irreplaceable. We have other scientists who could continue your work, though your particular brilliance would be missed.”

Elliott stood to leave, but Medici’s voice stopped him at the door.

“One more thing. The Council wanted me to thank you. Your proposal for controlled revelation, along with the sense of urgency you provided to them, was the catalyst for this decision. In a very real way, the new world order will be your legacy as much as theirs.”

Elliott left without responding, but Medici’s words followed him into the elevator, through the empty building, into the car that waited to take him to the airport. He had advocated for revelation, for an end to the secrecy and lies. But this—this was a nightmare beyond his worst imaginings.
