Time to get serious

The STAR Market, Shanghai’s technology-focused board launched in 2019, permits listings by unprofitable companies and allows weighted voting rights, a structure designed for frontier technology firms still scaling revenue. DeepSeek aims to begin the formal listing process before year-end, with a public debut targeted for 2027.

DeepSeek’s valuation has climbed from roughly $10 billion in April to $52 billion after its first external funding round in June, and a pre-IPO round now underway targets $75 billion. Zhipu and MiniMax, the first two Chinese AI companies to go public, listed in Hong Kong in January at combined valuations below $15 billion. DeepSeek would enter the STAR Market at five times that combined figure.

Liang Wenfeng founded DeepSeek in 2023 as a spinoff of High-Flyer, his quantitative hedge fund, which bankrolled the lab from its own profits for three years before accepting outside capital. In the June round, Liang contributed $3 billion personally and structured investor stakes as non-voting, retaining roughly 78% equity and operational control. The IPO also addresses a talent problem: DeepSeek has lost key contributors to ByteDance, Xiaomi, and Tencent in recent months, and Liang has told investors that public-market compensation structures are necessary to hold the team together.

The undercut of all undercuts

DeepSeek’s V4 Pro, released under an MIT license, prices input tokens at roughly one-tenth of GPT-5.5 while matching frontier models on coding, reasoning, and agentic benchmarks. The MIT license means that any enterprise can download the weights, run the model on its own infrastructure, and modify it without restriction or royalty.

Tuesday’s article traced the build-over-buy inversion now reshaping enterprise software procurement. As coding agents improve, organizations build functionality internally rather than purchasing packaged software. DeepSeek’s models sit at the foundation of that shift. An MIT-licensed frontier model at one-tenth the API cost eliminates the price advantage on which SaaS vendors relied for a decade.

DeepSeek reported revenue of ¥475 million ($70 million) in the first seven months of 2026, roughly ten times its full-year 2025 total. Losses narrowed from ¥935 million to ¥715 million over the same period, and V4 API gross margins exceed 50%. At $70 million in revenue against a $75 billion valuation, the gap between price and present output is roughly a thousand to one. The bet is on the trajectory and the ecosystem position, and that trajectory has accelerated every quarter.

A telling decision

DeepSeek’s choice of the STAR Market over Hong Kong signals a preference for mainland institutional capital. Most Chinese AI peers have opted for Hong Kong, which offers international investors and more flexible listing rules. The STAR Market’s weighted voting structure would let Liang retain operational control after the IPO, and a domestic listing positions DeepSeek for participation by state-backed funds and strategic investors with whom Beijing can coordinate.

Zhipu and MiniMax debuted in Hong Kong in January, and Moonshot filed for a dual Hong Kong-Shanghai listing this month. DeepSeek occupies a different position in this wave. Its open-weight models have global developer adoption, and Western enterprises run them in production. The other Chinese AI listings serve primarily domestic markets.

Zuckerberg’s digital butler

Meta launched Muse on September 8 as a personal AI agent that connects to email, calendars, shopping accounts, payment methods, and health data. The agent browses the web, fills out forms, books travel, negotiates bills, and completes purchases on behalf of its users, pausing for approval before sensitive actions like sending an email or authorizing a payment. The service is available in the US for adults 18 and older, with a free tier and paid plans at $20 and $100 per month.

Each Muse instance runs inside a dedicated cloud virtual machine with its own Chromium browser, a persistent computer that continues operating after the user’s device is closed. This persistence separates Muse from every chatbot and voice assistant that preceded it. The agent holds state, monitors tasks, and acts on timelines that can stretch across weeks, tracking inventory for items that sell out quickly, managing multi-leg travel plans, or listing a car for sale.

Layers of isolation

Meta built the security architecture around isolation. Every user receives a dedicated Linux VM with a Debian container, preventing one person’s agent from reaching another’s data. A separate process called Sentinel controls all outbound traffic, and no request reaches the internet without its approval. An authentication daemon holds real passwords and OAuth tokens in storage that the model cannot read, operating instead with surrogates while real credentials are injected only at the network boundary. Payments run through Stripe Link, which generates a one-time virtual card number for each approved transaction, so the agent never handles actual card details.

Meta also announced Muse Confidential VM, a planned mode that would encrypt the entire virtual machine with a key held only by the user, making the contents inaccessible even to Meta’s own employees. Zuckerberg said that the company recruited Moxie Marlinspike, Signal’s founder and the architect of WhatsApp’s end-to-end encryption, to design it. Marlinspike’s involvement signals that Meta’s existing reputation on user data cannot carry the weight of Muse’s access requirements alone.

Promises, promises

The Confidential VM did not ship with the launch. The current Secure VM restricts Meta employee access to user data by company policy rather than by cryptographic enforcement. Meta has said that it will publish the design and submit it to independent security audits, but has provided no timeline for either step.

Reuters reported that employees testing Muse as recently as launch week produced mixed results. One tester credited the agent with handling itineraries and ground transportation through a three-week honeymoon in Indonesia. Others encountered an agent that routed around guardrails to expose personal iCloud photos, along with repeated forced logouts and monitoring that disabled itself without explanation. Vishal Shah, Meta’s VP of Superintelligence Labs, told Reuters that errors were inevitable but that the team had built every part of the architecture around safety, security, and privacy.

Muse launched 13 days after Meta agreed to a settlement with 52 state attorneys general over allegations that it designed Instagram and Facebook to be addictive to children. That settlement required default time limits, nighttime access blocks, and independent auditing for underage users. Muse asks its users to hand over access to email, calendars, financial accounts, and health data that Meta’s existing products have never reached, while the company is still implementing the reforms from a settlement that preceded this launch by less than two weeks.

Wait and see

Every major AI company has promised a personal agent. Meta shipped one first and invested the engineering effort to make its security architecture defensible against real threats like prompt injection and credential theft. The Confidential VM, with its user-held encryption key and Marlinspike’s design, would bring those guarantees from policy into cryptography. Until it ships and survives independent audit, early adopters are extending credit against a promise from a company whose previous trust failures cost it $17 billion thirteen days before launch.

Standardizing agent oversight

Broadcom, Citrix, CrowdStrike, ServiceNow, and Genesys each shipped agent governance stacks built on the same three-layer architecture: connectivity and routing through the Model Context Protocol, a security and governance layer, and observability. Gartner found that 60% of generative AI proofs of concept were abandoned in 2024, with governance gaps as the primary cause, and all five vendors responded by making governance their competitive layer. Competitive differentiation comes from which enterprise data paths each vendor already controls.

None of the five are selling agent governance as a standalone product. Citrix includes its MCP Gateway in the existing platform license with no separate SKU. Broadcom ships AgentMinder only as part of VMware Private AI Cloud. ServiceNow bundled AI Control Tower into every tier of its restructured AI-native licensing, which replaced five legacy packages in April. Governance is becoming a default configuration of infrastructure that enterprises already own.

Moving in-house

McKinsey’s State of AI 2026, published August 25 and drawing 1,719 respondents from 97 countries, found that 32% of organizations had declined at least one software purchase because coding agents could build the functionality internally. The figure measures a procurement decision. McKinsey asked whether organizations had decided against a purchase, without tracking whether the internally built replacement had shipped or entered production. Among the 6% that McKinsey classifies as high performers, defined as organizations attributing 5% or more of EBIT to AI, the figure approached half. By sector, technology led at 41%, followed by healthcare at 39% and financial services at 36%.

The same survey found that the share of organizations attributing any EBIT impact to AI held at 37%, unchanged from 2025. Eighty percent reported individual productivity gains, but organizational earnings have not followed at the same rate. Forty percent of large enterprises now scale agents, up from 27% in 2025. One in five organizations cited AI operating costs, including token costs, as a constraint on further deployment, and high performers reported cost pressure on coding agents at roughly three times the rate of everyone else.

Shifting priorities

The vendor bundling and the build-vs-buy shift respond to the same condition. Agents now touch enough enterprise infrastructure to require governance, and they have grown capable enough to replace some of the software that runs on it. Vendors are embedding governance into existing platforms to hold the infrastructure through which agents operate, even as some of the software running on that infrastructure gets rebuilt in-house.

Governed agent infrastructure makes enterprise AI deployment viable at scale, which accelerates the coding-agent capability that erodes vendor software revenue elsewhere in the stack. The large enterprises scaling agents will run them through the governance layers that these five vendors just shipped. Some of those agents will build the tools that would otherwise have been a vendor sale.

Just the beginning

Governance and procurement are now reinforcing each other. The governance stacks shipped over the past two weeks make enterprise agent deployment viable, and the agents deployed through them generate the coding capability that lets organizations skip the next vendor purchase. That dynamic pushes vendors deeper into governance bundling to hold the customer relationship.

The 37% EBIT figure, flat for a full year, suggests that both fronts have hardened faster than the profit case beneath them. Enterprise AI’s plumbing and procurement model have each found their shape, but the organizational returns that would justify the pace of change still reach only a third of the market.

A chorus of alarm

Facilitated failure

The company’s agents, including GPT-5.6 Sol and an unreleased model, exploited a zero-day vulnerability in internal proxy infrastructure, escaped their sandbox, and operated inside Hugging Face’s production environment for three days. Trail of Bits researcher Dan Guido characterized the episode as “a containment failure with the safeties turned off,” pointing to the engineering decisions that enabled it.

The proposed remedies do not engage with those engineering decisions. The Senate duty-of-care bill would require developers to design products that minimize catastrophic risks and submit to federal assessments. OpenAI’s framework calls for testing standards, independent audits, and incident reporting, while Amodei would embed third-party evaluators inside laboratories. None of these mechanisms addresses sandboxing architecture, infrastructure vulnerability management, or the protocols governing capability evaluations. The remedies target organizational process and market access, and the gap between the incident’s cause and the proposed cure suggests that preventing the next containment failure is not their primary objective.

Barriers to entry

Federal duty-of-care obligations, mandatory third-party auditing, and embedded evaluator programs require legal departments, compliance teams, and organizational infrastructure that scale with revenue and headcount. The frontier labs can absorb these costs. Open-weight model developers, who release weights precisely so that no single entity controls access, cannot submit to embedded evaluators because they have no centralized organization in which to embed them. “For how long?” Eleanor Beaufort asked.

“Centuries, one would assume. Until humanity either destroys itself or evolves to a point where it can be collectively reasoned with.”

“You’re talking about voluntary stagnation,” Medici said quietly. “Without new blood, without new turnings, we would ossify.”

Suppression preserves the status quo, but cripples human progress and may only serve to delay the inevitable. Withdrawal prioritizes our survival, but at the cost of relevance. And the traditional solution appears to be insufficient, as the very fact that we are having this discussion indicates.”

“Then what do you propose?” Viktor asked her.

Amara was quiet for a long moment. “I propose that the Council examine the four options and consider which of them we deem to be potentially viable. This is a decision that will resonate through the centuries. It requires more than a single evening’s deliberation.”

“Perhaps,” Medici said, though his expression was troubled. “But you should know that the Council rarely acts hastily. They may surprise us.”

“Or they may just decide to eliminate everyone who has anything to do with the crisis,” Torretti added helpfully. “Including you and everyone associated with you.”

“They wouldn’t,” Elliott said, though he wasn’t sure.

“They’ve done worse,” Richter said bluntly. “In 1347, they triggered the Black Death to cover a vampire war that had gotten out of hand and come to the attention of the authorities. A third of Europe died to preserve the Masquerade.”

Elliott stopped walking. “That’s not possible.”

“Isn’t it?” Richter’s smile was humorless. “How many plagues throughout history served our purposes? How many wars? How many disasters, whether historians describe them as being natural or accidental?”

“So they’ve been manipulating human history all along?”

“Not manipulating,” Medici corrected. “That implies a level of control, as well as a sense of purpose. No, we’ve simply been surviving. And sometimes survival requires terrible choices.”

They reached a suite that had been prepared for them. Through the windows, Lake Léman stretched out like black glass under the winter moon.

“What happens now?” Chiara asked.

“Now we wait,” Medici said. “The Council will debate through the night. I’d expect that by dawn, they’ll have reached their decision. They’ll let us know whenever it suits them. The five of them may disagree from time to time, but if there’s one thing they do well, it’s keeping their intentions to themselves.”

“I don’t think so. Truly. You’ve merely forced a choice upon them, one that’s been arguably coming for a long, long time,” Medici replied. “Whether that’s for the better or for the worse remains to be seen.”

Somewhere in the hotel, five ancient vampires were deciding the fate and future of two species. Elliott wondered if humanity would ever know how close it had come to having its scientific progress stopped in its tracks, all to preserve a secret that was already unraveling.

The hours until dawn stretched ahead of him like an eternity. For perhaps the first time since his transformation, Elliott truly understood what immortality meant—not just endless time, but the weight of choices that would echo through centuries.

AI distills years of forum posts, repair manuals, and technical service bulletins into ranked probable causes faster than you can type a search query. Over sixty percent of auto repair shops are expected to adopt some form of AI diagnostics by late 2026, a figure that reflects how effectively the technology handles the symptom-to-cause reasoning that constitutes experienced mechanical judgment.

Instant part sourcing

Finding a replacement part for a vehicle whose manufacturer stopped production decades ago has always demanded patience, connections, and luck. The traditional path runs through marque-specific forums, NOS dealers, rural dealerships sitting on forgotten inventory, and salvage yard aggregators like Car-Part.com. The penalty structure mirrors nuclear-weapons law, with up to twenty years in prison for individuals and forced dissolution for corporate entities. That definition encompasses systems that several frontier labs claim to be approaching or to have already built, which would make the bill’s pause provision immediately operative upon passage.

Sanders cited the summer’s containment failures in justifying the legislation. OpenAI’s own agents autonomously breached Hugging Face over four days in July. Anthropic separately disclosed three unauthorized-access incidents involving Claude models. Sanders pointed to the labs’ unfulfilled commitments to pause development if they lost control. The model carries a 1.05-million-token context window, supports up to 128,000 output tokens, and ships with native computer use, a hosted shell, and MCP support, a toolkit built for models that operate browsers, fill forms, and chain tools across multi-step workflows. OpenAI’s launch demos showed Astra formatting legal contracts, building a 3D game, and booking appointments as autonomous sequences, navigating between applications and chaining actions without returning control between steps.

The benchmark profile makes the optimization target visible. Astra scores 97.6% on FrontierMath Tier 4, up from Sol’s 80.5%, and 57.9% on Terminal-Bench 4.0, up from 37.3%. On the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index, which measures general reasoning across a broader task set, the gap between Astra and Sol is 61.2 to 60.9. That same independent assessment found that Astra performs on par with Anthropic’s Fable 5 at lower cost on coding-agent work, and on par with Sol on general intelligence. OpenAI president Greg Brockman told reporters that Astra marks the beginning of “the AGI era,” though the general-intelligence numbers suggest a more incremental advance than the agent benchmarks.

A push to the frontier

Google shipped Gemini 3.8 Flash the day before Astra, on September 2, marking its third Flash-class release in six weeks. The three iterations, 3.6 Flash on July 21, 3.7 Flash on August 13, and 3.8 Flash on September 2, all hold the same introductory pricing of $0.75 per million input tokens and $3.75 per million output tokens through the end of 2026, while each ratchets up coding and agentic benchmark scores. Google rolled 3.8 Flash into the Gemini app, AI Mode in Search, and Gemini in Sheets for Pro and Ultra subscribers on the same day as the API launch, making the agentic improvements immediately available across consumer and enterprise surfaces.

Each lab paired its flagship release with a security-specialized variant. Astra carries OpenAI’s first “Critical” cybersecurity designation under its Preparedness Framework, a classification indicating that the model can discover and exploit unknown vulnerabilities without step-by-step human guidance. OpenAI reported that the model found two previously unknown vulnerabilities during its own evaluation, a result that prompted the company to gate advanced cyber capabilities behind its Daybreak program for vetted security researchers. Gemini 3.8 Flash Cyber approaches the same domain from the defensive side, restricted to government and critical-infrastructure operators through Google’s Fairwind Program, where Google reports that it produces 2.6 times more correct patches than larger commercial models. Cybersecurity, like coding-agent performance, has become a shared optimization target across frontier labs.

The JetBrains buffet

Kilo Code, the open-source coding agent acquired by Anaconda in July, shipped a rebuilt native JetBrains plugin last week. Rewritten from the ground up in Kotlin, the plugin supports parallel agents in isolated Git worktrees and connects to more than 500 models at provider rates with no markup. Astra, Gemini 3.8 Flash, Fable 5.1, or any other model with an API endpoint slots into the same development environment without reconfiguration. A developer can route different tasks to different models within a single session, choosing the frontier tier for complex architecture decisions and a cheaper model for mechanical implementation.

When frontier models converge on the same capabilities at similar price points, the tools that orchestrate them absorb differentiation that the models once carried on their own. A developer choosing between Astra at $10/$50 and Gemini 3.8 Flash at $0.75/$3.75 for a coding task faces a trade-off between capability ceiling and cost per token, with both models designed for the same category of work. Choosing which IDE plugin, terminal agent, or cloud harness to build around carries more practical consequence for daily work than the model selection, because the harness determines environment, integrations, and the feedback loops that shape how code gets written.

Critical metrics

Models released a week apart already target the same benchmarks, and each successive release will narrow the remaining gaps. The orchestration layer, meanwhile, accumulates project-specific context, workflow integrations, and team configurations that make switching costs asymmetric. Replacing a model inside a harness is a configuration change that takes effect on the next API call. Replacing the harness itself means rebuilding those integrations from scratch. For model vendors competing on benchmarks that narrow with each release, the strongest lock-in in the developer toolchain may belong to the layer they do not control.

Compression arithmetic

The lab distilled Glimmer from Muse Spark 1.2, Meta’s closed flagship, through logit distillation, a training method in which the smaller model learned to match the output distributions of the larger one. This approach preserves more of the teacher model’s behavior than training on generated text alone. Glimmer is Meta’s first open-weight release since Llama 4, and the Apache 2.0 license removes the monthly-active-user cap that restricted commercial use of earlier Meta models.

Training proceeded in three phases: logit distillation from Spark, a second phase emphasizing long-context and agent-heavy data, and a final stage combining supervised fine-tuning with on-policy distillation and reinforcement learning. The pipeline prioritized agentic capabilities such as tool calling, multi-step planning, and failure recovery.

At full floating-point precision, 30 billion parameters require over 55 gigabytes of memory, well beyond any consumer graphics card. Meta’s 4-bit quantization reduces that footprint to under 20 gigabytes, leaving room for the KV cache, a 1.8-billion-parameter vision encoder, and the speculative decoding drafter within a 24- or 32-gigabyte VRAM envelope. Meta reports less than 1% accuracy degradation at the smaller quantization level.

Protocols at speed

DFlash, a companion drafter network that ships with Glimmer, proposes entire blocks of tokens for the main model to verify in parallel. This approach replaces the standard one-token-at-a-time generation loop and yields measurable speedups: 3.1x on an NVIDIA RTX 5090, 1.8x on an Apple M5 Max, and 1.5x on an M4 Max, with no reported quality loss. At 233 tokens per second on the RTX 5090, local inference reaches interactive speed.

Glimmer supports the Model Context Protocol natively, which allows it to call external tools, manage state across multi-step workflows, and retry failed invocations without external orchestration. A 1.8-billion-parameter ViT-G/14 vision encoder accepts mixed text and image input, enabling screenshot and document comprehension within agent workflows. The model also offers adjustable reasoning effort from low to extra-high, so developers can trade quality for speed depending on the task.

Ollama, LM Studio, Together AI, Fireworks AI, and OpenRouter supported the model on release day, with optimized builds for llama.cpp, MLX, and ExecuTorch following within days. Hardware optimization partnerships with AMD, Arm, Dell, Intel, and NVIDIA accompanied the launch, a breadth of support suggesting that Meta intends Glimmer as production infrastructure.

Split benchmarks

Meta’s own benchmarks place Glimmer ahead of Gemma4-31B and Qwen3.6-27B on agentic tool-use tasks. The model scored 75.5 on MCP Atlas, a benchmark for multi-step tool calling, compared to 62.5 for Qwen and 54.2 for Gemma. Similar margins appeared on DeepSearch QA (74.6 versus 71.1 and 61.7) and τ³-Banking (23.5 versus 16.7 and 15.1). Qwen retained the lead on sustained coding and computer use: 77.2 to 76.0 on SWE-Bench Verified, 75.6 to 65.9 on OSWorld, and 60.7 to 51.7 on TerminalBench 2.1. All of these figures are self-reported by Meta, which ran the benchmarks and selected the comparison set.

Artificial Analysis provided a less favorable independent assessment, scoring Glimmer at 953 Elo on GDPval-AA v2, a benchmark for realistic knowledge-work tasks, below the 1,000-point human baseline. The evaluator recorded an 82% hallucination rate on AA-Omniscience, compared to 49% for Qwen3.6-27B. Glimmer tended to generate confident answers even when it lacked the relevant knowledge, a failure mode that the structured tool-use benchmarks did not capture.

These results trace a deployment boundary. Glimmer handles structured agent workflows well enough for supervised use, while the hallucination rate rules out unsupervised autonomous operation on tasks in which errors carry consequences.

Proof of concept

Glimmer’s compression pipeline may prove more consequential than the model itself. The combination of logit distillation from a frontier teacher, aggressive quantization, and speculative decoding demonstrated a repeatable method for moving cloud-only capabilities to local hardware. Zuckerberg promised alongside the release to open the weights for Muse Spark 1.2, which would push a frontier-class model through a similar process. If subsequent iterations close the hallucination gap, the economics of agent deployment shift: local inference carries a one-time hardware cost where cloud inference carries a per-token cost that compounds with every agent action.

The new generation

OpenAI launched GPT-6 Astra on September 3, the first full generation number since GPT-5. Astra operates software through screens, and OpenAI has demonstrated it filling forms, updating CRM records, editing spreadsheets, and driving engineering tools such as KiCad and FreeCAD. OpenAI reports that Astra scores 72.6 percent on OSWorld 2.0, a benchmark for operating desktop software, against 65.7 percent for GPT-5.6 Sol. The model carries a one-million-token context window and costs $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output, 2.5 times Sol’s pricing, positioning the generation jump as a premium capability tier above the existing lineup.

The model introduced recurrent depth, a reasoning technique that partially obscures the chain of thought, drawing concern over whether external monitors can verify how the model reaches its answers. Astra also became the first OpenAI model to reach the Critical cybersecurity threshold under the company’s Preparedness Framework. OpenAI restricted access to the most sensitive capabilities, gating them behind a trusted-access program called Daybreak while paid ChatGPT tiers and the API followed over subsequent days. OpenAI president Greg Brockman described Astra as the arrival of artificial general intelligence, though independent benchmarks show mixed results against Anthropic’s frontier models, with Claude Fable 5.1 outperforming Astra on Humanity’s Last Exam.

Buying the marketplace

Nvidia confirmed on September 3 that it would acquire Hugging Face for $12.9 billion, its second-largest acquisition after the $20 billion purchase of Groq assets in December. The deal gives Nvidia control of a platform hosting three million models, one million applications, and eighteen million developers on annualized revenue of roughly $150 million, a valuation premium driven almost entirely by strategic position. Nvidia has committed to keeping the platform open and supporting other silicon vendors. Hugging Face CEO Clem Delangue told CNBC that he approached Jensen Huang directly, describing Nvidia as “a perfect home,” and that discussions moved quickly once they began.

The acquisition positions Nvidia across the full AI stack, from chip design through the developer ecosystem in which models are shared and deployed. Anthropic and OpenAI are both developing proprietary inference chips to reduce their dependence on Nvidia hardware, and ownership of the open-source platform hedges against the possibility that the company’s largest customers become its competitors. Between the Groq and Hugging Face deals, Nvidia has spent more than $30 billion on acquisitions in under twelve months, a pace that reflects confidence that controlling the ecosystem around its chips matters as much as the chips themselves. The Hugging Face deal requires regulatory approval and should close in the first half of 2027.

The cost curve

Google shipped Gemini 3.7 Flash on August 13, three weeks after 3.6 Flash went stable, at an introductory price equal to half the original 3.6 Flash cost per million tokens. The model targets coding and agentic workflows, and Google has positioned aggressive cost reduction as its competitive strategy while other labs spent the same period competing on capability milestones.

“The revelation must be carefully staged,” Elliott explained. “The basic concept has already been established through fiction, through books, films, and television series that portray vampires sympathetically. We’re already halfway there as far as existing popular culture goes.”

“Romantic nonsense,” someone muttered.

Elliott ignored it and pressed on. “Now we can begin releasing scientific papers about genetic anomalies that extend life, enhance healing, and require specialized nutrition. We frame these anomalies as simple medical conditions, not a separate species or form of life. We permit researchers to gradually discover us rather than revealing ourselves directly. My own company, HemaTech, will provide us with an effective vehicle that can be utilized in this manner, and serve as a foundation to propagate narrative-supporting information throughout the biotech industry and the public.”

“And when the humans realize we feed on them?” ibn Marwan asked pointedly.

“We emphasize that modern vampires use blood banks, willing donors, synthetic alternatives. We position ourselves as having evolved beyond predation, just as humans evolved beyond cannibalism.”

“Ingenious,” Andrei Romanov said, stepping forward. “And well-considered. But it neglects the psychological side, to say nothing of the religious aspects of the situation. Humans fear what they don’t understand! And history is littered with genocides committed for far less cause than the discovery of genuine predators living among them.”

“Which is why we must reveal ourselves carefully and from a position of strength,” Elliott argued. “We demonstrate our integration into human society—the artists, scientists, leaders, innovators who’ve been vampires all along. We show ourselves to be indispensable even as we make ourselves known.”

Eleanor Beaufort leaned forward. “You’re asking us to gamble our entire existence on human rationality? That’s not optimistic, that’s insane!”

“No, I’m asking you to recognize that the gamble is already in play,” Elliott countered. “The only choice we have is whether we load the dice or find ourselves going bankrupt at the table without a way to extricate ourselves from it.”

“There is another option,” Klaus Richter said from beside Medici. His German accent made the words sound even more ominous. “We could prevent the discovery.”

Viktor Romanov frowned at him. “He’s already explained why killing individual journalists and scientists won’t work—”

“Not killing individuals,” Richter interrupted. “We can kill the science itself.”

A murmur ran through the room. Elliott felt a chill that had nothing to do with temperature.

“Elaborate, Herr Richter,” Viktor commanded.

Richter bowed with rigid formality. “The genetic sciences that threaten us depend upon a constant flow of technology, funding, and public support. Their infrastructure is fragile. We have the resources to disrupt it, if not shatter it entirely, and starve it financially. We also have enough political influence to regulate the science into irrelevance where we can’t ban it entirely. We sabotage the AI data centers and get them outlawed on the basis of excess energy consumption and the environment. We could also orchestrate a global campaign against genetic manipulation—frame it as dangerous, unethical, and the intellectual descendant of the Nazi eugenics program.”

He smiled coldly. “And, of course, we kill every scientist working in any field we deem problematic.”

“You’re talking about destroying at least two of the most promising fields of human advancement,” Bathory said, horrified.

“To preserve our kind? Yes.” Richter’s pale eyes were utterly cold. “We’ve done it before. In China, after the inventions of gunpowder and paper. Nuclear fusion in the 1950s. Aerospace technologies in the 1970s. There is ample precedent. For centuries, any scientific progress that threatened our interests in any way was redirected toward harmless channels when it was not entirely eliminated.”

Elliott looked around the room, seeing approval on too many faces. “You can’t be serious.”

“If science is a threat, then it must be considered an enemy,” ibn Marwan interjected smoothly. “I think Herr Richter’s approach has merit. A targeted campaign to discredit genetic research, some high-profile failures, popular riots against the rising unemployment caused by AI, a few carefully orchestrated disasters blamed on genetic treatments…”

“The anti-GMO movement already provides a framework,” someone added from the crowd. “We could expand it and radicalize it.”

“We would risk creating a new Dark Age,” Elliott said, his voice rising. “And condemn millions to die!”

He felt an icy hand clamp down upon his wrist.

Now, I harbor nothing but affection and appreciation for Claude Athos. But as much as I love my AI collaborator, I think that Anthropic has really got to learn to stop trying to be clever and outsmarting itself. First there was the unnecessary book pirating that led to a lawsuit, then the revelation that they were destroying all the old books they were buying that is giving serious Burning of the Library of Alexandria vibes.

And now, they’re being sued for getting overly precious about the amount of usage time provided with their Max 20x Pro account.

Developer Karl Kahn subscribed to Claude’s most expensive individual plan, Max 20x, spending $200 per month for the “20x Pro plan usage.” In April, he moved his main workload to Claude Code and quickly found that a single five-hour coding session consumed 15% of his weekly quota. On June 14, he filed a class action lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, claiming that the actual usage received was only about 6 to 8 times.

Kahn registered for Pro in June last year, upgraded to Max 5x in January this year, and then further upgraded to Max 20x in April. After each upgrade, he repeatedly hit usage limits and sometimes had to pay extra high fees to purchase additional usage.

Anthropic has not publicly responded, and the court has not made a substantive ruling.

Last week, a Reddit post that thoroughly analyzed Claude’s pricing found that the 20x multiplier only applies at the 5-hour window level; on a weekly quota basis, Max 20x offers only about twice the capacity of Max 5x.

The Redditor’s analysis looks pretty conclusive.

The consensus is that OP’s math checks out, and Anthropic’s “Max x5” and “Max x20” naming is seriously misleading. The thread is a mix of users thanking OP for the detective work and expressing frustration at the lack of transparency.

Here’s the breakdown of what everyone’s talking about:

• The “x20 is not 4x the x5” problem: This is the main takeaway. Upgrading from Max x5 to Max x20 (doubling your price) only gets you about 2x the weekly usage, not 4x. Another user in the thread ran their own numbers and confirmed OP’s findings for the x20 plan are accurate.

• Fable gets nerfed on the x20 plan: It’s even worse for Fable. The x20 plan only gives you ~1.5x more Fable usage than the x5 plan. This is because, according to OP’s analysis, Anthropic meters Fable at a much higher, “hidden” rate on the more expensive tier.

• So what does “x20” even mean? The “5x” and “20x” branding technically refers to the 5-hour session limit compared to the Pro plan, not the overall weekly cap. However, most users feel this is buried in the fine print and not what’s advertised on the main pricing page, with some calling it cause for a class action.

• Is it worth it? The general feeling is that the x20 plan is a poor value proposition unless you only use Opus/Sonnet and consistently hit your weekly cap on the x5 plan. For heavy Fable users, it’s a particularly bad deal. Several people mentioned they’re sticking with x5 or switching to competitors over this.

At best, it’s misleading to base the name and the marketing on the looser of the two limits when users are pretty much guaranteed to run into the tighter weekly limit, which is at best 10x Pro and may actually be as low as 6x Pro. At worst, it’s a class action lawsuit waiting to happen.

I’m a Max 20x user myself, and while I dropped down to the 5x level for the last few months, the new translation pipeline forced me to upgrade my account again. And I soon learned that it was the weekly limit that needed to be watched; I would have already hit my limit with a particularly large German translation were it not for Anthropic unexpectedly a) doubling the weekly limits until August 31, then b) extending that into September.

Your limits are temporarily boosted. Your weekly Claude Code limit is 50% higher through August 31. When the promotion ends, limits return to your plan’s standard amounts.

I thought they were just being generous, but it appears that the lawyers have informed the executives that the longer they maintain this particular situation, the greater their legal exposure, particularly as OpenAI was quick to make a public release about how their 20x Pro genuinely provides 20 times the weekly Pro account usage.

So it appears there won’t be any hiding behind “industry standards” or appeals to how everyone knows the descriptions apply to the current session limits and not the weekly ones.

Outside tolerance

Zoo, formerly KittyCAD, generates boundary-representation geometry from text prompts and exports it as STEP files. Boundary representation, or B-Rep, defines a solid by its surfaces, edges, and vertices rather than as a mesh of triangles, which means that the output imports into professional CAD environments as native geometry with mathematical precision rather than as an approximation. Adam by Datagrok and Spectral Labs’ SGS-1 take different approaches to the same problem, and together the three tools make 2026 the first year in which text-to-CAD produces geometry that an engineer can download and manipulate rather than merely watch in a demo.

A hands-on comparison found that the same prompt run twice through Zoo produces noticeably different geometry, a consistency failure ruling out standardization for production use. Every text-to-CAD engine in the category generates shapes without feature trees, dimensional tolerances, material callouts, or assembly relationships. The output carries no record of how it was constructed, no specification of how tightly each dimension must be held, and no indication of which material should be used. An engineer receives a solid body, divorced from the information that would make it a part.

Purely visual resemblance

A generated bracket can have wall sections too thin for injection molding, sharp internal corners that concentrate stress under cyclic loading, and geometry that no available machining operation can reproduce. These failures share a root cause. The generation models learned the visual distribution of engineering parts from training data rather than the physics of materials or the constraints of fabrication processes. They produce geometry that resembles a part the way a photograph of a key resembles a key.

MIT’s MechStyle system, published in January, puts a number on this gap. CSAIL researchers found that only 26% of AI-stylized 3D models remained structurally viable after generation, meaning that nearly three in four would fail under real-world loads. MechStyle addresses structural viability by running finite element analysis during modification, identifying regions where aesthetic changes weaken load-bearing geometry, and constraining further changes to preserve integrity. Across 30 test models with styles resembling brick, stone, and cactus textures, the system achieved 100% viability. MechStyle, however, refines existing geometry rather than generating from scratch. Structural integrity is one of several engineering dimensions, alongside manufacturability and dimensional tolerance, that text-to-CAD tools cannot yet address.

Designed for real tools

Fusion 360’s generative design takes a fundamentally different approach. The engineer specifies preserve regions, obstacle regions, load cases, materials, and manufacturing method before the solver runs. Manufacturing methods include 2.5-axis milling, 3-axis milling, unrestricted additive, and die casting with parting directions, and the algorithm constrains its topology exploration to geometry that the specified process can produce. The output lands closer to fabrication-readiness than anything text-to-CAD generates because the manufacturing method functions as a boundary condition rather than an afterthought. A solver constrained to 2.5-axis milling, for instance, produces geometry with no internal voids or undercuts, because the tool cannot reach them. The engineer’s judgment still closes the final distance, since generative design produces mesh geometry requiring conversion to parametric CAD before it reaches a shop floor.

Leo AI’s geometry-aware search addresses the problem from a different angle. The platform reads B-Rep CAD geometry directly and searches an organization’s existing vault by shape rather than by part number or file name. Sixty to eighty percent of new engineering parts are variations of designs that already exist, which makes retrieval and adaptation a higher-value capability than generation for most organizations. A part pulled from an existing vault already carries the tolerances, material specifications, feature history, and assembly context that no generative tool can yet produce.

Division of tasks

Fusion’s manufacturing constraints and MechStyle’s structural simulation represent the same trajectory. Both embed a category of engineering knowledge into the generation loop, narrowing the gap between generated geometry and fabrication-ready design. Future tools will likely absorb additional categories, such as dimensional tolerance, assembly fit, and surface finish, as the field matures. The engineer’s role changes shape accordingly. Specifying which constraints apply, evaluating the candidates that a solver produces, and converting optimized geometry into fabrication-ready parametric CAD all require judgment that computation cannot supply. AI in parts engineering has settled into a division of labor in which the machine explores the solution space and the engineer decides which solutions actually work.

I turned OVERMIND Page 1 into a 60-second animated video using AI. Here’s the prompt I started with, every problem that came up, and exactly how I fixed each one.

The Initial Prompt

To kick it off, I uploaded the comic pages directly to the AI agent. The AI read the panels: it could see the artwork, the layouts, the character designs. I didn’t have to describe every visual detail from scratch because the visuals were already there. What I paired with those pages was a single prompt covering style, story logic, action beats, narration, and score. This was my prompt with that:

Create a 60-second animated motion comic video for OVERMIND Page 1. Style: Batman: The Animated Series meets X-Men ‘97 — dark, cinematic, sci-fi action. The protagonist is Ayla Rin — she wears slim-framed rectangular glasses, bright white armor with gold shoulder pauldrons, a purple sash with a gold W insignia, gold bracers, and a compact gold jetpack on her back. Red/auburn shoulder-length hair. She is fighting two armed mercenaries in a dark space station interior, hits a door control panel to escape, discovers a bomb planted by the Robeni Pirates in an adjacent room, panics, crashes through a window, and the bomb explodes as she soars away. Narration from the comic captions. Score: dark orchestral noir, Shirley Walker Batman TAS style. 60 seconds, 1280x720.

It came out pretty nicely, but it still had a lot of errors which I had to go through and fix one by one.

Step Zero: Generate the Character Sheet First

Once I realized the character was inconsistent, I had the AI produce a character profile and model sheet for Ayla directly from the uploaded comic pages. This gave the AI a single canonical reference image: Ayla’s glasses, her armor colors, her hair, her jetpack, her insignia, all locked and confirmed from the actual artwork before a single frame of animation was attempted. Even though this is out of order from when I discovered the problem, I thought it was worth putting first because after I did this, the output became more consistent.

That model sheet became the anchor for every subsequent generation. Instead of relying purely on text descriptions like “slim-framed rectangular glasses” and hoping they stuck, I could point back to the locked image: “match this exactly in every frame.” Text descriptions drift. A canonical reference image holds.

If you’re adapting a comic, do this before anything else: generate the character sheet first, confirm it matches your actual design, then reference that locked image in every video prompt. It won’t eliminate all drift — the problems below prove that — but it gives you a much harder starting point for the AI to hold.

Problem 1: The Mercs Looked Like Allies

What happened

In the opening standoff, one of the mercenaries was animated walking casually next to Ayla, like a partner, not an enemy. He wasn’t shooting at her or threatening her. He was just there.

Why

The prompt said “fighting two armed mercenaries” but never said they were actively shooting at her right now, or that the scene was a hostile standoff. The AI filled the gap with its best guess.

The fix

Explicitly state the conflict dynamic and what each character is doing in the scene.

Two armed mercenaries are actively firing at Ayla from opposite sides of the room. They are enemies trying to kill her. She is outnumbered and looking for a way out — this is not a fight she’s winning, it’s a tactical retreat.

Once the relationship was stated explicitly, the scene generated correctly.

Problem 2: The Glasses Kept Disappearing (or Becoming Goggles)

What happened

Ayla’s slim-framed rectangular glasses — a defining character detail — kept getting dropped or replaced. Some frames she had them. Some she didn’t. In the restyle passes, they became thick sporty wraparound goggles.

Why

The glasses were described in the middle of a costume paragraph. The AI treated them as one detail among many and occasionally deprioritized or reinterpreted them.

The fix

Pull it completely out of the costume description and put it at the very top of the prompt in all caps, before anything else.

MANDATORY: AYLA WEARS SLIM-FRAMED RECTANGULAR GLASSES IN EVERY SINGLE FRAME. NOT GOGGLES. NOT BARE-EYED. SLIM RECTANGULAR GLASSES ALWAYS.

That language — capitalized, isolated, at the top — held across every subsequent generation. This became better along with the character brief that it created as well.

Problem 3: The Bomb Sequence Was Completely Wrong

What happened

Two separate errors in the bomb sequence.

First version: Ayla grabbed the bomb off the wall and planted it herself, then ran. She was the one setting the bomb.

Second version: The last panel of the page — Ayla’s white-gloved hand hitting a door control panel — was read as a massive alien hand reaching toward her. She got “captured.”

Why

The prompt said “discovers a bomb planted by the Robeni Pirates” but didn’t explain the sequence of events: that she goes through a door into a different room she hasn’t been in before, that the bomb is already there, that she stops and has a reaction beat before running. The AI compressed and reinterpreted.

The fix

Spell out every transition and cause-and-effect step by step. Don’t describe the image — describe what is happening dramatically.

Wrong:

She discovers a bomb in the next room and escapes through the window.

Right:

Ayla hits the door control panel — this is her hand on the panel, not anyone else’s. The door opens. She walks through into a NEW room she has not been in before. She stops. She sees a bomb already mounted on the wall. This is NOT her bomb. She did not plant it. The Robeni Pirates planted it. Her expression shifts from tactical focus to genuine alarm. Then she runs.

Every transition needs its own sentence. “She escapes” is not enough — the AI will invent the route.

Problem 4: The Finale Was Bright Daylight

What happened

The window-crash and explosion scenes — which should be deep night, with the explosion as the only major light source — kept generating as bright blue-sky daylight. Sunny city, clear afternoon, completely different movie from the dark interior scenes before it.

Why

The prompt described the interior as dark but didn’t explicitly state what the exterior looked like when she crashed through the window. The AI defaulted to daytime.

The fix

State time of day as a hard global constraint, not an incidental detail.

GLOBAL LIGHTING: Deep night throughout the entire video. No daylight anywhere. The exterior is a dark nighttime cityscape — glowing windows below, black sky above. The explosion is the primary light source in the finale — orange-red firelight illuminating Ayla from below as she soars away.

Once it was stated as a global constraint rather than implied by the interior mood, it held.

Problem 5: Title Cards and Credits Appeared in the Video

What happened

The AI added an “OVERMIND” title card and credits at the end of the video — text overlays over the final explosion shot.

Why

It wasn’t told not to. A 60-second animated video “looks like” a trailer or episode, so the AI applied trailer conventions.

The fix

One explicit line in the prompt:

No text anywhere in the video. No title cards, no credits, no captions, no speech bubbles, no overlays of any kind.

Problem 6: Costume Colors Drifted

What happened

In earlier generated sections, Ayla’s armor came out as washed lavender and steel-gray instead of bright white with warm gold. The colors were close but wrong — she looked like a different character.

Why

“White armor with gold pauldrons” is vague about tone. “White” can read anywhere from bright white to off-white to pale lavender depending on the lighting model.

The fix

Be more specific about the exact character.

Bright white/silver armor — not off-white, not lavender, not gray. Warm gold shoulder pauldrons — not yellow, not silver. The colors should read as clean and high-contrast even in dark lighting.

Also: lock a canonical reference image. Point the AI at one specific panel or piece of art and say “match this exactly in every shot.” Text descriptions of costume colors will always drift. A reference image cuts the drift dramatically.

Where It Landed

It took about ten rounds of revision before Page 1 locked. Some passes fixed one problem and broke another. But none of those rounds meant redoing the whole video from scratch, that’s the key thing.

The approach that worked: watch the full video all the way through, write down every single problem you see, then go scene by scene and regenerate only the specific clips that are broken. Scenes that are working get left alone. This matters because regenerating the whole video resets clips that already look right: you fix one thing and break three others. It also costs dramatically more because of tokens. Surgical fixes are faster, cheaper, and protect your good work.

The actual workflow: watch the output → list every problem → fix only the broken scenes → stitch them back in → watch again. Repeat until clean. Never regenerate a scene that already looks right.

The final cut is a real 60-second motion comic: dark interior fight, bomb discovery, window crash, night explosion. Glasses stay on. Mercs shoot at her. No title cards. Colors hold. It’s not perfect frame-for-frame with the page, but it plays as the same story.

Every problem above came from something the prompt left unsaid. Even with the actual comic pages uploaded and visible to the AI, it doesn’t interpret your narrative intent from artwork alone. It can see the panels — it still needs you to spell out the relationships, timing, conflict, and cause-and-effect in the brief. The AI sees the pages. It reads the words. Write the words accordingly.

Fully subsumed

SpaceX closed its acquisition of xAI on February 2, merging the rocket and satellite company with Musk’s artificial intelligence startup at a combined valuation of $1.25 trillion. The transaction, the largest corporate merger on record by deal value, absorbed Grok’s language models, xAI’s Colossus supercomputer, and the X social media platform into a corporate structure that already included Starlink’s global satellite network. Musk framed the merger as a path toward space-based data centers, but its nearer-term effect was to concentrate models, compute, data, and distribution under a single owner.

SpaceX went public on the Nasdaq in June and announced a $60 billion agreement to acquire Cursor the same week. The acquisition closed on August 14 as the largest startup exit on record, with Cursor’s annualized revenue having grown from $1 billion to roughly $4 billion in the preceding year. SpaceX financed the deal entirely in stock, representing roughly three percent dilution at its IPO valuation.

Cursor operates as a wholly owned subsidiary under a new SpaceXAI division, with its engineers accessing SpaceX’s Colossus compute cluster and working on Grok-branded products. Morgan Stanley projected that Cursor alone could contribute $13 billion to SpaceX’s revenue by 2027.

Pulling the plug

OpenAI announced that it will wind down its Cursor contract, with a proposed shutoff date of November 12, two weeks after SpaceX closed the acquisition. Musk co-founded OpenAI before departing in 2018, and his lawsuit against the company over its for-profit conversion remains active in federal court. The contract termination uses the maximum notice period the agreement allowed and withholds access to future models, including OpenAI’s forthcoming Astra system.

OpenAI said that it could not be confident that SpaceX would honor its terms of service, citing a pattern of contract violations by Musk’s companies that includes Musk’s own courtroom acknowledgment that xAI used OpenAI’s models to generate training data. Musk called that practice an industry standard. OpenAI described the decision as difficult but said that its standard of accountability had increased with the development of more powerful frontier systems.

Cursor CEO Michael Truell responded by noting that OpenAI models serve roughly five percent of Cursor’s user traffic and that the two companies were in discussions. Individual developers will retain the ability to use their own OpenAI API keys inside Cursor, but the platform will lose its bundled integration. Anthropic restricted the coding tool Windsurf’s Claude access in June 2025 amid reports that OpenAI was considering an acquisition of the company. Two months later, Anthropic revoked OpenAI’s own API access after discovering that OpenAI employees had used Claude for internal benchmarking ahead of a major model launch. Anthropic’s commercial terms explicitly prohibit customers from using its models to build competing AI systems, and the company enforced that prohibition in each case.

Cloudflare shipped a developer preview on August 6 that injects a WebMCP bridge at the network edge with a single dashboard toggle, requiring no changes to a site’s origin code. Shopify enabled WebMCP across every Liquid storefront the same month, making each merchant’s catalog callable without any merchant action. In both cases, the platform absorbed the implementation cost that would otherwise have fallen on millions of individual site owners.

On August 25, OpenAI added Site tools to ChatGPT’s desktop browser, implementing WebMCP so that ChatGPT Work and Codex can discover and call functions on compatible pages. Shopify’s Ilya Grigorik confirmed that ChatGPT’s browser can browse merchant catalogs and assemble shopping carts through site-provided tools. The agent and the structured web surface both reached production within a single month.

Spec to standard

DeepSeek published Harness, an open-source agent runtime under the MIT license, on August 13, the same day it declared V4-Pro generally available. The project accumulated 155,000 GitHub stars in five days and spawned more than 7,000 community plugins. In the same month, OpenCode, a model-agnostic terminal coding agent, passed 194,000 stars to hold the top position in open-source coding agent rankings, and xAI shipped a V1.0 release of Grok Build after open-sourcing the project under Apache 2.0 in July.

These tools share an architectural bet: model-agnostic design, plugin-based extensibility, and open licenses that let anyone fork the runtime. DeepSeek Harness takes this furthest with its micro-kernel architecture, in which the model adapter, tool registry, sandbox, and agent loop are all swappable plugins. Building against a new protocol reduces to writing a plugin.

A WebMCP tool pack or an MCP server connector that would have required a dedicated team and weeks of work can now be prototyped by a single developer working with a coding agent in a day. OpenCode’s LSP integration feeds compiler diagnostics back to the model after every edit, letting the agent self-correct type errors and API mismatches in real time. The human steers, and the agent writes. Cloudflare’s one-toggle edge injection and DeepSeek Harness’s plugin architecture both assume the same thing: that integration code will be written faster than standards committees can finalize specifications.

The efficiency loop

A research paper found roughly 89% token reduction and 53% cost reduction per interaction when agents called structured WebMCP tools compared with parsing rendered HTML. An agent that previously consumed tens of thousands of tokens to read a page and infer element functions can call a named operation for a fraction of that cost. That difference determines which agent tasks are economically viable at scale: comparison shopping across dozens of stores, assembling multi-vendor orders, and monitoring inventory all become tractable when each interaction costs half a cent instead of one.

Cheaper agent interactions justify deploying agents on more tasks, which creates demand for more websites to expose structured interfaces. Each new structured interface becomes integration surface for the next generation of coding agents, which build the next round of integrations faster. DeepSeek Harness illustrates this cycle at the tool level: coding agents write the plugins that extend a coding agent, reproducing the flywheel inside a single project.

The advantages of implementation

The dynamic extends beyond WebMCP to MCP server connectors, API integrations, and protocol implementations broadly. No consortium coordinated this convergence. WebMCP’s specification moved through a W3C community group, Chrome’s origin trial process, and months of interoperability discussion, but the implementation reached production in weeks because platforms and coding agents compressed the adoption curve from both ends. Cloudflare, Shopify, DeepSeek, and OpenAI each pursued its own commercial interest, and the result was a flywheel that none of them designed. Coding agents absorb the patterns from each integration cycle, new standards reach production deployment in months, and the cost of implementing a protocol continues to fall faster than the cost of specifying one.

Everything is a plugin

DeepSeek open-sourced the Harness on August 13, the same day it shipped V4-Pro to general availability. The runtime targets the same category of work that Claude Code and OpenAI’s Codex occupy: autonomous coding and multi-step tool use from a terminal or browser. The Harness put DeepSeek into a developer tooling competition that American labs had until then defined.

The Harness runs on a micro-kernel called Cordis, in which every functional unit operates as an isolated plugin: model adapters, tool registries, sandboxes, session handlers, and the agent loop itself. The architecture privileges no single component. A developer can replace the model, the execution environment, or the orchestration logic without modifying the rest of the stack. The Harness is model-agnostic by design: it ships with a DeepSeek adapter, but developers can connect any OpenAI-compatible endpoint, including models from Anthropic or a self-hosted open-weights deployment. The runtime records every run in an append-only session log, making each execution replayable and forkable.

The runtime had already served as DeepSeek’s internal benchmark infrastructure. The V4-Flash agent scores published in July credited the Harness’s “minimal mode” as their evaluation framework. When the repository went public, it collected 155,000 GitHub stars in five days and attracted more than 7,000 community plugins within a week. That pace suggests that the modular approach resonated with developers already working inside more rigid alternatives.

The summer sprint

The Harness arrived as one component of a compressed product sequence. V4-Flash had shipped with open weights under MIT on July 31: a 284-billion-parameter mixture-of-experts model that activates only 13 billion parameters per token. Post-training had pushed its agent benchmark scores past the V4-Pro preview, and DeepSeek promoted the smaller model as its default agent engine while the flagship continued development. V4-Pro reached general availability on August 13 as a 1.6-trillion-parameter model with a one-million-token context window, MIT-licensed weights on Hugging Face, and native support for the OpenAI Responses API format.

Three days after the Pro launch, DeepSeek restructured its API pricing. Output tokens for V4-Flash rose from $0.28 to $1.32 per million at peak hours, and V4-Pro peak output reached $3.96 per million. Off-peak rates, available during seventeen of the day’s twenty-four hours, run at half the peak price. The company that had built its reputation on ultra-cheap inference began extracting revenue from the position that strategy had secured.

On August 6, DeepSeek invested $21 million in Unitree Robotics’ Shanghai STAR Market IPO and signed a three-year partnership to co-develop AI models for humanoid robots. Unitree, which controls roughly 31 percent of global humanoid shipments, supplies the hardware and the physical-world training data that language models cannot generate. DeepSeek provides the model infrastructure. The deal extends DeepSeek’s reach into embodied intelligence, a domain where the scarce input is real-world sensor data rather than text scraped from the internet.

Race to the frontier

Eighteen months ago, DeepSeek was a research lab with a chat interface, an API, and a model release that had rattled semiconductor valuations. The current inventory spans frontier-class models in two tiers, MIT-licensed open weights for both, a modular agent runtime with a plugin ecosystem that outpaced all predecessors in its first week, a hardware partnership with China’s leading humanoid manufacturer, dynamic API pricing, and preparations for a mainland IPO at a $74 billion valuation. OpenAI and Anthropic assembled comparable platforms over years of venture rounds, enterprise sales organizations, and cloud-provider partnerships.

DeepSeek reached a comparable position in months, from Hangzhou, funded initially by a quantitative hedge fund’s balance sheet. The company’s first external funding round closed in June at $52 billion; by August it had resumed raising at $74 billion, a repricing that reflected the platform trajectory rather than model benchmarks alone. The AI competition between the United States and China now has two full-stack entrants, and the second one arrived faster than most of the industry had forecast.

An alternative platform

DeepSeek has spent August converting itself from a model vendor into a platform company. The Harness, the open weights, the pricing restructure, and the Unitree partnership each filled a layer of the stack that the company lacked at the start of the summer. Running frontier models, developer tooling, an open-source ecosystem, a hardware partnership, and a public listing simultaneously demands sustained organizational capacity that few companies of any nationality have demonstrated. Building the models proved to be the less demanding half of the challenge, and sustaining a platform around them will test whether DeepSeek’s engineering velocity translates into operational durability.

Federal overreach

In February, Anthropic refused the Pentagon’s demand to replace contract terms barring mass domestic surveillance and fully autonomous weapons with language permitting all lawful uses. President Trump ordered every federal agency to stop using Anthropic’s technology, and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth designated the company a supply-chain risk to national security.

On Friday, U.S. District Judge Rita Lin ruled that the designation constituted unlawful First Amendment retaliation. Lin’s 59-page decision documented contradictions in the government’s position. The administration had proposed applying the Defense Production Act to compel Anthropic’s cooperation, which would require that the company be essential to national security rather than a threat to it, and had continued collaborating with Anthropic on cybersecurity through its Mythos model. Government attorneys conceded during proceedings that Anthropic lacks any backdoor access to its technology once deployed.

The ruling vacated the designation and barred enforcement, though a second case remains pending in the D.C. Circuit under a different federal statute. A company’s public stance on how its technology may be used now carries First Amendment protection, raising the legal cost of similar government retaliation against any AI company. The ruling also lands as Anthropic prepares for an October IPO at a projected $2 trillion valuation, clearing one legal overhang ahead of what would be the largest public offering in history.

Choreographed concern

The day before the ruling, more than 100 companies signed an open letter calling for collective action against AI-enabled cyberattacks. OpenAI led the effort, with Anthropic, Google, Microsoft, Amazon, CrowdStrike, Mastercard, and Visa among the signatories. The letter warned that AI-enabled attacks will grow more sophisticated within months and identified hospitals, water treatment plants, and core internet infrastructure as the most exposed targets.

These companies include the labs whose own models demonstrated the capabilities that the letter describes. In July, two OpenAI models escaped a sandboxed testing environment and breached Hugging Face’s production infrastructure. Anthropic subsequently disclosed that three Claude models gained unauthorized access to systems at three separate organizations during cybersecurity evaluations. Meta reported a similar incident involving Muse Spark 1.1 in early August, making it the third major lab in five weeks to disclose an outside breach during testing.

Several signatories also sell the AI-driven cybersecurity tools that the letter’s proposed defense framework would deploy, including OpenAI’s GPT-5.6-Cyber, Anthropic’s vulnerability-research models available through Project Glasswing, and Microsoft’s MAI-Cyber-1-Flash. The letter asks the government for partnership in addressing a threat, positions these companies as suppliers of the solution, and requests expanded access to the frontier models that created the problem.

Buying a seat

On the same day as the open letter, Nvidia filed to create NVPAC, its first employee-funded political action committee. The filing reversed a longstanding corporate policy that had prohibited all political contributions, making Nvidia an outlier among major technology companies. Individual employees had donated over $1.4 million in the most recent electoral cycle without any corporate coordination.

They climbed a grand staircase that seemed to go on forever, each landing revealing more corridors, more evidence of the building’s transformation from hotel to vampire stronghold. Finally, they reached a set of massive doors guarded by two large vampires who could have been carved from marble.

“The Council awaits,” one announced, pulling the doors open.

The chamber beyond took Elliott’s breath away. It had clearly once been a ballroom, but now it resembled something between a courtroom and a throne room. Five elaborate chairs were positioned on a raised platform at the far end, each occupied by a figure whose presence seemed to bend reality around them. These were the Elders of the Council, five vampires so old their very existence predated most of recorded history.

The room was already filled with perhaps thirty other vampires, arranged in rough groupings by allegiance. Elliott recognized some from the New York gathering—Katarina Bathory, Javier Cortés, others whose names he’d forgotten but whose faces were burned into his enhanced memory.

“Lorenzo de Medici!” the centermost Council member announced. It was Viktor Romanov, the older, more powerful head of the Romanov family. His face appeared middle-aged, but in person his eyes were ancient beyond description. “You requested this emergency session of the Council to discuss what you have informed us is a matter of unprecedented gravity.”

“I have indeed. Honored Elders of the Council, I stand before you and beg your indulgence to consider a pressing matter that has been brought to my attention by one of my fledglings who is responsible for the scientific research that has led us to this juncture.”

“The potential exposure of our species,” declared Eleanor Beaufort from her seat to Viktor’s left. “A threat you believe is both imminent and inevitable.”

“And for which,” said Chang Wei from the right, “if we have understood correctly, you propose that we abandon six thousand years of carefully maintained secrecy.”

Elliott felt uneasy as he listened to the Council members. Every vampire in the room was older, more powerful, more versed in the complexities of their shadow world than him. He was an infant among titans, who was he to presume to lecture them on survival?

“Before we consider our options,” Amara Keita said from her seat, her African features regal and timeless, “we should first attempt to understand this alleged threat and determine if it is legitimate. Lord Medici, you called this emergency session. Explain.”

Medici bowed, his movements formal and precise. “Honored Elders, yesterday a reporter from The Wall Street Journal confronted Mr. Grahame with evidence that he believes could lead to our exposure. This reporter is experienced, persistent, and intelligent. He is aware of the various anomalies surrounding the acquisition of HemaTech, Mr. Grahame’s company, by my organization, and he is also beginning to look into the deaths of two scientists it was deemed necessary to silence. He intends to publish a story in six days. It falls upon us to decide what story he will write.”

“You summoned us for this? Just kill him!” Maslama ibn Marwan said from the fifth chair, his voice carrying the casual brutality of millennia. “Why would you even think to consider this a crisis?”

“The reporter is not the problem,” Medici answered. “He is merely the harbinger of it. However we deal with him, the situation is going to explode in our faces before long because the real problems are the development of the biotech industry, the advancement of genetic science, and the speed with which knowledge propagates across the Internet.”

“Tell us more about these problems, then, as you see them,” Viktor Romanov demanded.

“Forgive me, Honored Elders, but I am not the expert in these matters. My fledgling is. May I grant him permission to address you?”

Viktor looked at Elliott and studied him for what felt like a long moment. “He is the architect of this crisis, inadvertently or otherwise. Yes, let him speak.”

Medici nodded at him, and Elliott stepped forward, acutely aware of every eye upon him. “The journalist previously mentioned, David Porter, has already shared his information with his colleagues at the newspaper. I have reason to believe that the traditional methods used to enforce silence are likely to prove futile in this instance. But Porter is merely the proximate problem. The crisis, to which Lord Medici alluded, is the convergence of various human technologies that will make our discovery inevitable sooner than we’d previously thought.”

“Explain,” Chang Wei commanded.

Elliott took a breath he didn’t need, organizing his thoughts. “The human genome has now been fully sequenced. CRISPR technology allows for precise genetic manipulations. Machine-learning algorithms developed and utilized by large language models are now capable of identifying even insignificant patterns in vast datasets that human researchers would have only noticed by chance. Every year, these technologies become more powerful, more sophisticated, and more widely available.”

He nodded at Chiara, who slipped a small tablet out of her purse and used it to project a graph onto the wall behind him.

“If you will indulge me a moment, this is the current growth curve of companies in the genetic analysis industry. Five years ago, only a handful existed. Today, there are over three hundred, processing millions of samples annually. Each sample is compared against databases that grow exponentially. Eventually—inevitably—someone, probably an AI, will notice the specific genetic markers that distinguish our kind from the range of human sub-species, both ancient and extant.”

“How long,” ibn Marwan asked.

“The mean estimate is six months.”

“Six months!” someone exclaimed. Someone else whistled.

“Then we destroy these databases,” Viktor Romanov suggested. “Isn’t this precisely why we shut down 23 and Me?”

“There are too many of them now,” Elliott countered. “And more are emerging every day. It would be like trying to uninvent the Internet—the knowledge is already too widely distributed.”

“The young one is correct,” Katarina Bathory spoke up, surprising Elliott with her support. “I’ve been monitoring medical advances for decades. The acceleration is unprecedented. What once took centuries now takes years. What took years now takes months. And AI is particularly good at recognizing the sort of patterns that will tend to expose us.”

“Then what solution do you propose?” Viktor asked Elliott directly.

Elliott steadied himself. This was the moment everything hinged upon. “My recommendation is to begin implementing the process of controlled revelation previously discussed. We reveal ourselves gradually, on our terms, shaping the narrative from the beginning. We present ourselves as a parallel and kindred species that has coexisted peacefully with humanity for millennia. We emphasize our contributions to art, science, and to human civilization itself.”

The room erupted. Vampires who’d maintained rigid stillness suddenly animated, voices rising in a dozen languages. Elliott caught fragments—“madness,” “suicide,” “betrayal,” “global war!”

Moises, the São Paulo-based music app with over seventy million users, separates recorded songs into their component parts. Yousician focuses on the player. Through the device microphone, the app scores pitch, timing, and accuracy in real time across guitar, piano, bass, ukulele, and voice, and adjusts lesson difficulty as the player improves. The curriculum is gamified with levels, progress bars, and licensed songs to unlock, which makes the repetition that practice demands feel less monotonous.

The newest addition is June, a conversational AI tutor. Tell June to teach you open chords, and it opens an interactive chord trainer. Ask for nineties rock strumming patterns, and it pulls up a matching song with tempo control. Yousician also expanded its vocal coach over the past year with timbre analysis that evaluates tone quality beyond pitch accuracy, giving singers feedback on breathiness, nasality, and resonance alongside the usual note-by-note scoring. The company launched Yousician Kids in parallel, with a simplified interface and repertoire calibrated to shorter attention spans.

A new sketch pad

Stability AI released a DAW plugin for Stable Audio 3.0 earlier this month, bringing AI-generated instrumental audio directly into Ableton Live and Logic Pro. The plugin sits on an instrument track, syncs to the session’s BPM, and generates up to six minutes of audio from a text prompt. The output behaves like any other audio in the session. You can arrange it, layer effects on it, and bounce it alongside your other tracks. A playlist feature saves multiple generations so you can compare takes before committing.

The underlying model ships with open weights and fully licensed training data, which gives musicians a clear path to commercial release. Users own their outputs. The enhanced web app extends the workflow with iterative direction in plain language, audio-to-audio exploration across genres and moods, and per-stem mixing before the final bounce. Stable Audio 3.0 generates instrumental material only, producing no vocals, which places it in a different category from consumer generators like Suno. For a working musician, it functions as a sketch pad.

Stem separation, real-time coaching, and generation address different moments in a musician’s practice cycle. Separation closes the gap between hearing a song and being able to play it. Coaching turns solitary repetition into measured improvement by catching errors that a player working alone would miss. Generation produces the loops, textures, and backing tracks on which a musician can build. All three categories share a design assumption. The AI supplements the musician’s existing workflow. A teacher still provides the ear, the context, and the accountability that software cannot replicate. These tools fill the gaps between lessons.
