An AI actress got picked up by a talent agency, and Hollywood is already out condemning the existence of AI acting, even though the technology is still a ways off from making functional movies.
It's the next stage in animation. Just like Pixar's Monsters Inc. had very impressive hair animation for its time, this is very impressive all over. I'm looking forward to AI animated films that don't have the shackles of DIE.
Cloning has been offered already for decades, so AI clones of top actors is surely more than at drawing-board stage. Paul Newman? Humphrey Bogart? Heck, Carrie Fisher already got resurrected. If Calvin can think of the “what could go wrong?!” possibilities of cloning himself, surely “bright” sparks at Disney etc have done so. Let alone intelligence agencies or the military.
How long before Tilly creates AI clones of herself?
Can't see why anyone is complaining. If you can't beat the uncanny valley and maybe eight seconds before it has its thumb on backwards, you should probably find a new line of work. It'll be years before they have to really compete.
Great post. Thats actually pretty cool. AI movies will definitely become their own genre, bc that creator is right, you cant compare them one to one with humans. But the potential is so great. Hollywood will either double down on the hate, or do a 180 and try to buy out the open source AI generators to control them. I still think some company will find a way to gatekeep out truly great and based authors, but the power dynamic is shifting quickly.
I really appreciate the insight you provide about the new developments in AI. I heard about Tilly Norwood today on the radio, and it focused on the panic from actors and Hollywood. Unfortunately, it left out the good parts of AI and how it can help. I imagine that it would be helpful to be able to run through 20 different interpretations of a scene at a fraction of the price and wear and tear on the production crew before finding the “best” adaptation. It probably helps with editing, as well. Matt Damon in an interview said that Jack Nicholson told him that Nicholson is a good actor because he’s a great writer. Imagine how much more someone with his talent could accomplish if he wasn’t limited by someone else’s vision.
The percentage of actors that have actual talent in Hollywood is 3% or less. Will AI raise that bar? Not unless the creator/producer is talented.
