I doubt that it is purely altruistic, and I have seen no evidence in other industries to indicate that many executives have the kind of forethought that is being demonstrated by the AI companies.
Their motivation is to have a head start on getting their products wired into the stuff people use every day, thereby locking themselves into the top of the AI market.
Think of how Microsoft managed to get Windows everywhere, to the point that it's now prohibitively difficult for a lot of institutions to move away from it.
