I think what really scares them is that since AI is built on pattern recognition, they fear that AI-written material will be the same mediocre story over and over again. Not because it's plagiarism, but because all the material AI trained on - their material - REALLY IS the same mediocre story over and over and over again. Imagine 500 AI-written novels, and 495 of them feature a redheaded female forcing herself on the Very Respectful main character.

No one is consuming the awful, stymied tripe that SFWA endorses; shouldn't they be thrilled that at least AI are reading them?

They strike me as the type of people who would lose a case because they failed to notice that the other side didn't sign their paperwork.
